Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II?? Nah..just salt. Sodium Chloride. NaCl. The stuff you put on French Fries!! Sorry…

NaCl; When Salt dissolves into water, it liberates both the sodium ion and the chlorine one. I know salt water has anti-bacterial activity; I don’t know about antivirals but suspect so. Any virologists out there to offer data?

calling a virologist….. Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!

If salt killed viruses, then seawater wouldn’t have any viruses in it. T’aint so. Where exactly are you going with this? While NaCl dissociates into its ionic form, it does NOT form chlorine gas and sodium metal. Thermodynamics won’t let it. You have to add electricity to dissociate it, and there are better ways. What are you trying to do? Reinvent bleach? Ozone is a much better bleaching/disinfection agent than dilute saltwater.

On the other hand, irrigating the sinuses with hypertonic saline will mechanically flush out virus and bacteria, and reduce their levels to something easier to kill.

I give up. What is it you want to know?

The original thought on this thread was about using salt as a preservative, not as an antiviral. Also, folks who live in warmer climates need to add salt to their diets.

I wanted to know if the salt in the new saline water pools would be effective in killing the virus after the birds have bathed in the pool and people have been swimming in the public pool. I guess the old clorine type pool water would be safe, but what about the the pools that have salt filter systems?

Lorelle – at 17:05

We’ve always gargled with warm salt water to stop a sore throat from getting worse. Having read that the H5N1 virus congregates in the throat, I would definitely try this. Also makes a good eye wash if you sterilize the water first.

anonymous @ 19:04

Can the af virus survive in a saline filter pool? It is the new system that has replaced clorine systems. The pool guys pour in bags of salt instead of clorine.

Sorry. That was prepmaniac looking for anonymous, but I am not allowed to press shift to select @ without it posting. So……

LMWatBullRun – at 16:52 Along with the discussion of the need for unpowered ventilation, one thing I have not seen discussed is whether or how much salt folks are storing. Salt is relatively easy to get on the coast, and in selected areas, but fairly hard to find most other places, and remarkably important for 19th century living, not to mention hot weather survival.

I am thinking that salt is cheap now, but my be hard to come by later.

What do others think?

why? It doesn’t matter, anonymous’s post at 10:31 was a stand alone post. I am neither one, btw.

Until this forum requires registration, why not just anonymouses be anonymous?
