Forum: Ex-prepper Wants to Know

03 October 2006

anonymous – at 22:34

Folks, I am an ex-prepper. I bought my 20 cases of water. the 25 cases of canned food. 300 N95 masks. Then something weird happened. I lost interest. May be because my wife thinks I am a total nut and should be committed. And there hardly any mention of bird flu in the mainstream media nowadays. So, are we still on track for this epidemic thingy?

Jane – at 22:56

It’s still bubbling in Indonesia, Thailand, China?, Vietnam? Diseases in Africa, India….on and on. H5N1 isn’t done yet, but it could turn out to be something else instead. Hope the mainstream media picks up on Pandemic Flu Preparedness week, October 9 - 15.

DoubleDat 22:59

Short answer… yes. Some strong indication it might be sooner rather than later… however, it will not happen on anyone’s time table. It could be tomorrow… or five years from now.

You should be glad for the emergency preparations you have made - regardless of whether pandemic flu arrives tomorrow or never… because I can guarantee you that life will dish up a few “unpleasant suprises” for you in your life time - of which most are made easier with the addition of a little pre event preparation such as you have done.

Is it just me, or does something about the post stink? Epidemic thingy?

On the fence and hey stop pushing – at 00:05

Maybe it’s a troll thingy.

Jumping Jack Flash – at 00:07

anonymous. No one knows if this epidemic thingy is coming or not. But the more I prep the better I sleep.

One thought that keeps running through my mind is during the Tsunami in 2004, several Indian Ocean beaches COULD have had several hours of warning with plenty of time to get out of harms way. But not one area was warned. Not one.

The blackout that affected 50,000,000 million people in the North East 08/14/2003 didn’t just happen at the drop of a hat. It unfolded over the course of several hours. That blackout could have easily been contained to the Cleveland area (1,000,000 instead of 50,000,000 customers) if the operators on shift would have simply disconnected Cleveland from the grid. BUT - if you’re the guy who turns off 1,000,000 houses, you’ll always be known as the guy, perhaps idiot, that turned off 1,000,000 houses. No one will ever know that you kept the other 49,000,000 houses on. Ever.

Same concept with pan flu. It’s human nature. None of us want to be looked upon by our peers as the village idiot for crying wolf, or going to all kinds of trouble for something that may or may not materialize.

Even if it never comes, I don’t think I have wasted any money. And I have probably about quadrupled my knowledge of everyting from water filters to gardening and who knows how many topics in between.

I agreed. Prepping is a short course on a host of subjects I have never given one thought. In a way is is fun, also I like the feeling of being “ready”. Bird flu…power outages…life.

EnoughAlreadyat 01:00

If you’re an ex-prepper… whatcha doin’ with those preps?

Yes, and you never hear about the CIA’s successes, just the failures.

Want an update? :-) Here’s mine so far:

This “epidemic thingie” is still unfolding. Our perception is getting clearer, partly because there’s more data, and partly because some kind and stubborn souls are making the invisible visible:

Someone called this deafening silence.

We’re also learning lots about what to do:

We’re on our way to finding some ways around it (a couple of links and then just some keywords here):

This is by no means comprehensive, and there’s more to be done; things we still don’t know we should do. It’s not just the virus that adapts: we humans are also a biological “thingie”.

Thanks for coming around to check. I hope this helps. I would encourage you to talk to others with this information, just to see what they think.

Urgh!!!!! – at 04:18

Will those concerned BACK OFF with the troll THINGY every time someone says something that they don’t agree with. Is everyone here really so soft? Have you never heard the rigour of DEBATE and the OPINIONS of others??? Perhaps you should also take a look at yourselves and whether your views are objective? Whilst no one will ever admit it here, there is a palpable sense of excitement and dare I say wish fulfilment from some of the posters.

Fiddlerdave – at 04:46

“No news”. Sometimes I think I’m crazy too. Then I read human case sequences in Indonesia don’t match the local bird sequences which supposedly gave it to the people. They check only when there is dead birds. What cases get missed? In Lakeport Calif, dead birds show H5, but it is announced its “low-path” and the birds are dead of botulism. Except the testing was blown, the biologist in the field didn’t send the carcass, so there is no firm diagnosis of symptoms which are similar for botulism OR H5N1. But the announcement is “low-path, no danger” BEFORE the sequencing is done, if its ever to be done. Multiply people putting out the “good news” using any straw that can allow it that TPTB want spread to avoid economic losses by 100,000 other incidents, some guesses right, other guesses wrong. Yeah, “no news”! I realize that we KNOW one thing is for certain - there is more going on than we know about. 2x. 3x 10x 100x? The current known level makes me nervous, the true level is more. What “mainsteam media” is gonna print things that may discourage purchasers to buy a new car, or the latest fall fashions advertised in their pages? Rice and beans is not a major marketer. The mainstream media will tell you why you ARE sick, NOT why you WILL get sick.

Dr Dave – at 05:25

Ex Prepper: the mainstream media do not see much appeal in the sorts of stories that are emrging from Indonesia, Thailand, Java, China, Nepal, et cetera. These stories require scientific inquiry over a period of time and they do not have clear beginnings or ends; therefore, they do not distill easily into the small amounts of science that the general public can swallow. There are far more sensational stories to be told, such as school shootings, movie releases, and sex scandals. Certainly, the folks who select and edit the stories will return to the pandemic only when they have something that can upstage all of the other news items, such as an impressive body count.

crfullmoon – at 05:43

Besides, the authorities have decided to only tell the public what tptb think the public “needs to know” about “influenza” to “avoid panic” (code for “public demanding accountability”?)and are perhaps more interested that they continue their own jobs than giving people clear warning time to prep and mitigate the death tolls from the virus and the collateral problems.

Besides, having just run off and thrown up after reading this thread, (there goes my plans for the day) one never knows when one may get ill, lose a job, get weathered in, ect.

Nothing wrong in being prepared; we were supposed to be even before the scientists started warning about how unprecedented H5N1 is in our limited human experience.

anonymous – at 06:45

Thanks for the replies folks.

To those who are miffed with my attempt at humor, turn off the water works (another attempt at humor!!!!) and relax.

As for what I had done with my preps, they are sitting neatly on shelves in my basement. We haven’t started using them at all. I had used a couple of masks while mowing my lawn.

I don’t personally know one person who has prepared for this possibility. I will have to review what I got and add as needed.

crfullmoon – at 11:14

Check your state and county and local plans/officials and ask why they are willing to let their taxpayers and their children die unwarned.

Canadidates who think the public needs to know this little, this late after Oct.2005, about a global influenza pandemic on a “need to know basis”, are in for consequences.

Ask to be shown the details for giving authority down to the lowest levels in the field to id, pronounce death, make death certificates and transport bodies promptly to burial without assistance from outside the municipality. They have collateral as well as viral death (and possible other mammal species, like livestock) surges to be preparing for.

Ask if the families of workers in essential areas like the power grid have been stocking up, and it workers have been crosstrained so enough people know how to keep towns and cities and sectors running that must not fail or will cause more losses.

(What has become of journalism?? Gone the way of the informed citizen?)

crfullmoon – at 11:14 >> (What has become of journalism?? Gone the way of the informed citizen?) >> Journalism costs MONEY! Far cheaper than a news staff with a travel and research budget is to print the press releases issued by organizations of all types than to develope a story on your own. The bimbo male and female talking heads are expensive anyway, and hate big words. And yes, people who will spend MONEY (much less spend TIME to read)for hard, factual news have greatly reduced in number. Our own selection of the “fittest” in action.

crfullmoon – at 07:05

Fiddlerdave, I know “the world will go as it will, not as I would have it”, but, Arrrrrggghh! (sigh)

ssol – at 12:20

Dr Dave – at 05:25 I agree very much with this post. If anonymous has lost interest simply because the MSM are not covering the story he should not be surprised. There is no titillation and we won’t know how the story ends by the 11 o’clock news.

This story requires engagement beyond the television remote control. I do not mean to disparage ‘anonymous’ but we all have to dig at this story to learn of it for all the reasons mentioned.

More broadly, it is very important to develop reading and news gathering habits beyond MSM or we will have a world view limited to that cul-de-sac. I eliminated the cable feed to my home over a year ago as a test. My family and I are much better informed than our relatives and family as a result. More time is spent on substantive issues (like the flu) and no time is spend on Brad & Jen, the Ohio recount skulduggery or whether Jeb Bush would make a great president.

Fluwikie is wildly successful at eliminating MSM’s cognitive dissonance and subsequently re-enabling brain cells.

YMMV.
