This is the page I would like to post around town, on lightpoles and in grocerystores, sort of hit and run taping or stapling. I just sent it to DH at his office, so I’m not sure how it looks yet. A second page has the 3 web addresses from the Red Ribbons card, copied over and over. I’m going to cut them to fit the bottom of the page (rotated 90 degrees), and cut them again in between each 3-website group, so the segments can be torn off and taken home for internet use. I hope this works, because I couldn’t make any progress with the cards. (I hope this is clear; people make notices in this form to sell furniture, for example, and put their phone number on the little tabs.)
Pandemic Flu Awareness Week October 9–16, 2006
Pandemic flu would be like “5,000 Katrinas,” said Dr. Michael Osterholm.
If you are waiting for the government to come to your aid, you will be “tragically wrong,” said Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt.
The pandemic in 1918 was caused by a virus for which no one had any immunity, and it killed so many people that bodies were left on porches. Hospitals overflowed into tents. (Today our hospitals have no extra beds or staff; ambulances now are routinely told “we’re full, go somewhere else.”) The pandemic in 1918 missed only a few segments of the population, those in towns or on islands who cut themselves off from others. How long could you stay home with the supplies you have in your house now? If you want to be able to stay indoors and avoid the virus, do you already have [two or three or four] weeks’ supply of peanut butter, water, crackers, spaghetti sauce, toilet paper, etc.?
Go to the websites below to find out more about how to protect yourself and your family. (Websites may recommend having food for 2 or 3 days (but flu waves can last 6 weeks), 2 or 3 weeks, or 4–6 weeks. It’s up to you, in more ways than one.)
I forgot to mention that I will use a magic marker to draw a red ribbon at the top. Also, I’ll tape the first tabs to the page, then make copies of it. Perhaps a second row of tear-offs, depending on how much space is left.
Great ideas, Jane. I hope you can keep track of how many of the info slips our torn off and give us an idea of how it is going. : )
just how much time do you spend reading the garbage on telephone poles and the like? do you want to push pf into the realm of lost pets and weight loss? if you must post, use reputable spots, libraries and offices and show the time and place of community meetings and public hearings. getting the word out makes sense, but use only respected, mainstream sources ,or risk looking like just another crank on a mission.
How about bus stops?
We’re not having any community meetings. That’s part of the problem. PFAW is only one week, and it’s next week. So I guess I should start with the more respectable places, but I may spread them around more. It depends more on my energy and time than anything else. (Whose office? My dentist’s? I’m trying to be anonymous here. Give me more suggestions.)
I think Janes idea is a great one. Id post them everywhere. Push Pf into every realm. A lot of stuff like fashion and music and food trends start “on the street” and moves up, it dosn’t trickle down. Yeah of course also put them in libraries and so forth, but Id staple them anywhere you can. What if we all did that, just staple tons and tons of flyers everywhere. Instead of a tamiflu blanket we put out a info-flu blanket. Bus stops would be a terrific place to put them, people read that stuff while waiting for a bus-at least I did when I took the bus.
advertising for different markets makes sense. some people DO read the yard sale and lost pets. some people DON’T attend community and public meetings.
put ‘em up in the rest rooms of bars
Jane - Do what you feel is right. Post anywhere and everywhere. Just getting the word out will help. At this point, can we afford to be snobs? Do what you can and then sleep well at night knowing you did your part. gina
Also put written info on www.craigslist.com for your state, and grocery store bulletin boards, and office building bathrooms and doctor’s office waiting rooms & where you get your nails done.
