Forum: 1878 Yellow Fever Epidemic Story

sunprep?03 December 2006, 21:39

Here’s an article with a good summary of the 1878 Yellow Fever epidemic. Various human reactions/actions to the fever (including acts of heroism, sacrifice as well as acts of cowardice and corruption) are interesting… http://tinyurl.com/ygsalc

A very sobering story but I would take exception to the one of the last paragraphs.

So although we who live in cities today have our share of plagues—crime, pollution, economic decay, abandonment—we need no longer fear mass death by viral infection

Interesting. A snapshot of human nature in a disaster situation. Some rise to the occasion while others sink to new lows. And life goes on.

Night Owl - Hi! I realize you are a new poster here at FW and that’s wonderful. The article you posted from Grain was really interesting. However, I am a long-time poster here and there could be confusion with our handles. Would it be possible for you to choose a new one please?

Night Owl?04 December 2006, 08:46

Yikes! I hadn’t seen any of your posts. Sorry for the identity clash. I need to give this posting business a second look. This kind of activitiy could consume all my time. The handle is yours.

Night Owl — Please don’t be turned off to posting! Yes, you are right, it CAN become a full time job, but it doesn’t have to; you just post when you feel like it; leave off for a while, come back! We are glad to have you. You see we already have a Nightowl — I guess you all are up a lot in the wee hours!

Nightowl?04 December 2006, 15:04

Night Owl - Thank you so much. There was no way for you to see any of my posts as I hadn’t posted here for awhile. And don’t worry, this can and has happened with other posters and their handles before.

I felt quite awkward about alerting you and was hoping the FW mods would. I would just feel awful if you stopped posting as a result of this. Besides, I could use the company in the wee hours (LOL, ACM)! Please continue, and I hope you join the PFI forum as well.

I went to see what others had posted and found what I could not find before. The article was written in 1984. Well, before H5N1 came on the scene. And no comments were posted.

PBS did a show on this as well - American Experience I think - with an emphasis on New Orleans. Anyone who could afford to leave, did. Only the poor remained. Everyone was scared. Food ran low. Rumors flying. Quack doctors offering “cures.” Yellow fever is a pretty grim way to go too

This may be a silly question but what is a PFI forum? and Nightowl2 I hope you stay with us and keep on contributing as we all need your input.

Thanks

Hi Sailor - Not a silly question at all. It is new.

PFI Forum

To see how it came about, see Dude’s guest blogs at Monotreme’s website:

I went to the PFI Forum and started to look around but a security warning came up on the CPU so I closed it out, has any one else had the same experience?

Nightowl?05 December 2006, 00:12

Sailor - That is a notice of your computer not recognizing Dude’s security certificate coming up (I think that is what you call it, but I am the worst to explain it.) A lot of people, including me, had the warning pop up. To continue, you just accept the certificate as valid.

For a better comfort level, you could go to Dude’s guest blogs at Monotreme’ site, or even on the Ask thread there and ask Dude for more detail about it. I think someone else already did and Dude explained it in the comments part of one of his guest blogs about the forum. He has two guest blogs about it there. I think the security certificate is in the one: “PFI Forum is Up.”

The security certificate is from Dude’s IT company, accept it and then register if you’d like to post.
