Forum: Oregon Preppers Anyone

EveryoneWorksTogetherat 19:28

I was wanting to start this to see if there was anyone is Oreogn who is preparing and maybe wanted to share resources and time.

AVanartsat 19:51

I suppose it depends on what part of Oregon.

Seems like there is someone in Aloha. There may be a couple more in the northern part of the valley.

I’m across the river in SW Washington, but still keep in touch with people down in the Medford area so I know that there are prepared folks down there, but I don’t think they come to this site though.

AVanartsat 19:53

BTW, I think the question has been asked before and didn’t get much of a response.

EveryoneWorksTogetherat 20:05

Thats too bad. It would be great to be able to connect with people near me. Then we could plan together and share the burden of some of these preparations. lol.

newore – at 20:20

I’m in Portland, or zigzagging two or three other cities, depending where my family are hanging out.

Tomo – at 20:26

I’m in the central valley with family in vancouver.

EveryoneWorksTogetherat 20:51

Im in salem. lol fund place eh? lol

BeWellat 21:12

Very SW corner of the state, 10 miles from the CA border. Am just starting to think of what I can do to inform people around here. I used to live in Portland and Eugene, could only handle P’land for a couple of years. Not a city girl.

AlohaORat 23:15

I’m in Aloha. Some good resources that I’ve found are the LDS Family Cannery in Clackamas (open to the public on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10am-3pm), and Beaverton Foods (for 55 gallon drums, previously used for vinegar, at $3/drum).

What are your favorite local prepping resources?

newore – at 23:19

beWell:

my mom’s in harbor…

interesting to read the brookings paper saying they’d close down 101 in a quarantine.

pugmom – at 23:36

BeWell—howdy neighbor—I am on the coast south of Bandon. Wow, other preppers in Oregon—makes me feel good. What is the latest scoop on Oregon NOT purchasing Tamiflu for its’ citizens?? I think I read where our neighbor to the north, Washington, has prepped to the gills and purchased Tamiflu for everyone, whilst Oregon is leaving that up to us individually to figure out (I will spare you my internal thoughts on that one). BTW—have you had any luck getting anyone to prep?? I have NOT. And as far as getting any communal groups together for protection and SIP together---forget it—people are not into that where I live.

pugmom – at 23:44

BeWell—PS—we read in a local newspaper that there are contingency plans to close down Highway 101 (our only road) when things get rough and quarantines are declared. That effectively isolates me from the rest of the world and those outside goodies that I am madly trying to hoarde right now. We might have more to fear from our neighbors than even the people in the cities, as there are always 1 or 2 “range wars” going on somewhere in the area.

EveryoneWorksTogetherat 23:53

Well here in salem, NONE is planning. im the only one and mine right now is essentially a bugout kit. my ruck from the army with my goodies, and the bsaics. my grioup has a communal gathering of stuff that is ready to go on a moments notice. Were planning to head to the hills, after scooping a few spots already we know exactly where were goin, and its perfect. up off ground, shade from wind and rain, and the ability for a good community while the SHTF. Plus we all have differnt training that is helping out, and we have a small library of books for needed skills.

EWT: I envy you your group of like-minded people. Getting preps and food for all those people, and stashing it in a different place, however, must be overwhelming. I wish you the best and hope to hear from you on the other side.

BeWellat 00:52

pugmom – at 23:44

Did the newspaper say that 101 would be blocked from both sides? or just one direction? I wonder if that’s to prevent the gentlemen from Pelican Bay coming up 101 should they escape…

DH is interested to know more details, if you have them.

I am pretty much a hermit and have only talked to a few people; after getting told (with some annoyance) that the “bird flu” is a hoax to scare people and make money and exert government control, I hardly bother talking to anyone any more. I live in a pretty secure neighborhood (5 acre parcels with BLM on most sides), a lot of retired LEOs around.

But I am planning to print up some stuff (Dr.Dave’s manual, for one) and try to talk at the next city council meeting, and write a long letter to the local newspaper (Illinois Valley News). And include links to websites. This valley would be incredibly easy to barricade, I’m sure some people have thought about it (actually I know people thought of it after 9–11). I think I’m going to get a bit more pro-active and try to get some people aware of the potential here.

EveryoneWorksTogetherat 01:23

Having a group together is an easy way to ensure cooperation and continuing teamwork. Id be willing to join with people in toher areas if they wanted to to set up a meetign area in maybe BLM or other land area to set up a makeshift town if TSHTF. It would be an oppertunity to show what society can do when working together.

BeWellat 01:46

Since OR is something around 84% public land, state and fedgov, if TSHTF in a severe manner, something like what you suggest sounds a possibility - as long as the people involved are honest, sincere and at least somewhat knowledgeable. And near water. But deep preparation would have to be done beforehand regarding location, stashing and so on.

It is not easy camping out in the woods in the winter.

pugmom – at 10:56

BeWell—that makes 2 of us—we are pretty much hermits too. I think they will close the Oregon/California border, and what parts north I am not sure of. There is a pretty well known person that lives down here in these parts. She is a bird-flu researcher/lecturer and is active in planning. Her name is Geri Guidetti. Do a google search and look at her web sites. You may want to contact her, as she is the only active BF person I know around her (I have not met or talked to her personally however.) You bring up a good point about Pelican Bay—that is a worrisome prospect too.

BeWellat 21:05

I’ll google her name, see what comes up, thanks. Maybe tell me the name of the newspaper (I assume it wasn’t the Triplicate) and I may see if it’s online.

senegal1 – at 21:46

Hi my folks live in Southern Oregon and are on board with the need to prep for bird flu but haven’t yet done the conversion to actual prepping. I will see them at Xmas so hope to help them move forward.

katherine – at 00:12

Hi Oregon Preppers, We are in Portland and and much to our delight have found that three of our neighbors are also prepping. We have managed to talk many of our friends into prepping also-we are true believers and cannot come within a mile of someone without talking about it. I would think the independent streak of the people of Orygun would serve them well. There was an earlier thread re. Oregon preppers.

anonymous – at 02:37

Well I would be very interested in setting up a group local for meeting and sdetting up an area of living up in the woods in case TSHTF. I am more than willing to donate time effort and money to it, if it means that we can come out ok through it. The ramifications of the current situation is very scary. I for one believe that it is only a matter of time before a new virus comes, as viruses are the way that nature cleans house. Think about it, every century or so, as hjuman beiungs become more and more prominent, something happens, war, famine, disease, something. This is just another way of sweeping the floor, albiet in a unfortunate way.

pugmom – at 15:11

Hi Katherine—I left Portland 18 years ago, but all my family is still there and total non-preppers. We moved down here to the country and already had about 50% of prep stuff in place, just by the virtue of living in the boonies (such as water storage tanks, septic system, fenced acreage, 5 years of wood for our woodstrove after all the downed trees, etc.) Even with all our “natural” preps in place, it has taken us since last Feb. to stock up on the rest of it: food, propane generator and tanks, meds, etc. I shudder for my family and everyone else that expects to get all this done in a few weeks—it just cannot be done.

BeWellat 16:29

pugmom - I did a search for Geri Guidetti and if you have an email address for her I’d appreciate it. I didn’t seem to find one (could have been that I was blind with exhaustion…), and the updates for panflu info were from 2005.

I am very interested also about the possible closure of the CA/OR border and would like to find out more info. I guess I’ll have to ask some questions locally. I have some friends in CA who I think may wind up wanting help from us.

Bump – at 16:38
pugmom – at 21:19

BeWell—I don’t have an email address for her. She was written up in the Port Orford newspaper. They know her there and she just may live close by. Let me try to get that newpaper link for you.

pugmom – at 21:27

BeWell—it is the Curry Pilot—it is on the internet. It is out of Brookings, (not Port Orford). I did an archive search and found a few things. Here they are: http://tinyurl.com/y2vuy7, http://tinyurl.com/y69arj This is about all the stuff I can come up with. Let me know if it helps and if you have contact with her.

pugmom – at 21:32

BeWell—I found the article that talked about quarantine when the pandemic hits. Here it is: http://tinyurl.com/y69arj

pugmom – at 21:35

BeWell—sorry that link maybe didn’t work. I will send you the title of the article. Published between 8/9/2006 AND 11/23/2006. (Archive search=quarantine)

BeWellat 21:43

Thank you very much for searching it out. I will look at all that stuff now…being 10 miles from the border, I am highly interested in what “they” will do with the border if/when.

Here is the article in Toto:

CURRY COUNTY PREPARING FOR POSSIBLE AVIAN FLU OUTBREAK

Published: September 16, 2006 By Valliant Corley Pilot staff writer GOLD BEACH – Curry County is planning for what to do if a global disease outbreak reaches the United States or for any other emergency, Public Health Administrator Georganne Greene said at an avian flu seminar this week. “We all have the opportunity to be prepared for this just as we have the opportunity to be prepared for earthquakes, tsunami, and floods,” she said at the seminar held at the Event Center on the Beach. Greene spoke following a presentation by Geri Guidetti, who described the avian flu and its migration. Guidetti, a microbiologist who has been following the avian flu since 1997, said this flu appears to be pandemic. “The next major pandemic is likely to be as bad or worse than the one we had in 1918,” she said. That flu spread throughout the world, killing millions. Guidetti said throughout history the world seemed to have three pandemic diseases each century. She said the bad one in the last century was in 1918, with lessor ones in 1957 and 1968. “Medical supplies will be inadequate, large numbers of deaths will occur,” she said. “Count on it.” Greene said the public health organizations’ role is planning. “We need to coordinate,” Greene said. “In this scenario, the worst thing we can do is not coordinate.” Greene said health officials are exercising their plans for a possible pandemic flu and will have a statewide pandemic exercise in October. “After every exercise, we say what went well, what went wrong and where can we improve,” she said. She said businesses have all kinds of resources on how to keep businesses going with a third of their employees out. “One of the assumptions we’re making is most of our everyday communications are working as opposed to an earthquake when nothing is going to work,” Greene said. She said when Gold Beach had water contamination from a flooding Rogue River last winter, officials did get the word out quickly and “that was very encouraging.” She said that families should stock provisions in case they are needed for an emergency. “One thing to not forget is to have multivitamins in your emergency supplies,” Greene said. She said that would help if Curry County went for a long period without a variety of foods. “I get eight or 10 bulletins a day from different services, from all kinds of health organizations throughout the world,” Greene said. “I’m not one to believe any pandemic is going to start in Gold Beach or Curry County. But we have a high percentage of retirees who travel a lot. We don’t expect to be in the first wave or the second wave, but we will get it.” She said officials can see where the breakout is and see how to isolate it to the area. “We’re preparing for all of that,” she said. “It takes a lot of time and effort, but we have to do that.” “To control a pandemic in Curry County, the first step is community containment,” Greene said. “It is voluntary,” she said. “Cover your cough. If you don’t have a handkerchief, cough into your sleeve.” Businesses must be prepared, she said. “Where are the hand washing facilities? If they have to grab a knob to come back out, they’ve recontaminated that hand. You have to think about handling money, handling receipts. Those are the things people have to be more aware of,” Greene said. “When you wash your hand, what part doesn’t get washed? The end of your thumb.” She said social distancing is another part in a pandemic. “Don’t go to the movie theater, don’t go to places where everybody is together,” she said. “Monitor temperatures,” she said. “In 1918, some college campuses did not have a high rate. They checked everybody’s temperature. If it was up, you were quarantined for two days. “The biggest one, don’t go to work, don’t send your kids to school if they aren’t feeling well. That’s especially important when we’re in a pandemic.” She said businesses should look at what kind of work employees can do at home. In case of a pandemic, mandatory containment may include closing schools, closing theaters and other forms of social distancing. “We will be enforcing quarantines. It’s sort of like having a dog bite and the dog has to be locked up for 10 days,” she said. “But if you’ve been exposed to flu, you can be quarantined for three days. If you don’t have flu, you can come out.” She said Curry County has a unique situation in keeping infected people from coming into the county. “We could stop traffic coming in on Highway 101,” she said. “Things we are tasked with doing is distributing medicine and vaccine,” she said. “We will have 48 hours to vaccinate everyone in the county,” she said. “We are good at doing flu shots. We’re real good at flu shots. “The best way to get through this is to prevent it,” she said. “How do you stop it? Hand washing. Hand sanitation.” She said health officials are getting increasingly careful. “And we are getting more and more funding to respond to an emergency,” Greene said. “We’re all working cooperatively. We can do this and can get through it.” She said that two years ago when there were big flu vaccine shortages, Curry County ended up with more doses of vaccine per capita than it had ever had. “We were telling everybody: ‘Wash your hands, cover your coughs.’ We had the lightest cases of flu we ever had. So it does work.” Guidetti said that everyone should have a supply of water and food in their home. “The federal government is recommending you have at least three month’s supply of medicines,” she said. “We know we’re going to have a pandemic, but we don’t know when,” she said. The Curry County Public Health Department has copies of forms for a family disaster plan and information that businesses can use to be prepared. Also available is a volunteer form for those who want to volunteer in an emergency. More information about avian or pandemic flu can be obtained at Web sites run by the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/ and the World Health Organization at www.who.int/

BeWellat 22:02

pugmom - hmm, I tried many times as I could and no results. I think I’ll email them. Thanks, it could be that I’m not the most technically savvy person in the world…

BeWellat 22:03

Thank you! I think it’s time for me to take a nap. (after I read the article, of course.) I feel like I’m coming down with something; hope it’s not the (regular, of course) flu!
