Forum: Anyone Prepping in DE

I know that our local paper ran a story a while back about someone in DE that was prepping that didn’t want anyone to know what she was doing. I was wondering if she and I are alone in the 1st state or if there is anyone else out there doing any serious prepping. I thought that I was covering things until I started reading these forums. Anyway, if you’re out there and want to speak up I’d be happy to hear from you. Also anyone on the East Coast have any news about the ‘chemical spill’ at the Chestertown (MD) Foods poultry plant on 5/18?

Chesapeake – at 16:01

http://tinyurl.com/nwg6p It seems they did not find a chemical spill. Southern Maryland here but got some folks in Wilmington, don’t think they are prepping.

I have been prepping for about 4 months now. I feel like I am way behind and that things are going to be happening quickly. Parents and in laws think that I am crazy for using coupons to buy more than I need at one time — so I haven’t said anything about prepping — no need to have them talking to everyone about their crazy daughter. We have a ‘safe’ (relative term) meeting spot should our home not be safe for us. You would think that with all of the poultry houses in DE that more people would be doing something. Cases of the mumps are showing up here at the local university and in middle schools…just interesting…

Jersey Girl – at 16:33

My family do all of our shopping in Delaware to take advantage of no sales tax. From our observations in Costco and BJ’s no one seems to be doing anything.I agree about the poultry houses too.The Wilmington Journal should be highlighting this potential problem. In fact all papers should be.I feel it is criminal neglect not to.

Chesapeake – at 16:47

Jersey Girl, my brother and his family are in Deptford. They are coming here for the holiday weekend, going to talk to them then about prepping. It’s hard to talk to people that earn their living in the chicken business.

Good luck Chesapeake with efforts,I’m done with telling people they need to prepare. It odd though, when a blizzard is forcast, the store a jam packed.Bird flu… I think this sort of intangible, a virus.A blizzard is a real threat we have experienced,a pandemic is something we’ve never had to prep for.Maybe that this the reason for the apathy.

Former Delawarean here..now on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. No one I talk to in Dover on a regular basis has even mentioned it.

Do a search on the News Journal’s website, they’ve done a lot of articles and have lots of links regarding BF. That’s how I found this place :)

Bird flu has taken a back seat to the problems with the Christina school district. I do not know of anyone else here in New Castle County who is prepping. I go about my business and gather things as I find them. Can’t get my parents or in laws to take this seriously. I agree that it is an intangible — I keep telling the kids that we are prepping not only for possible bird flu but for potential hurricane or large storms over the summer. The News Journal is not taken seriously around here — they are called the news urinal, so I wouldn’t think that they would be able to sound any alarm with any amount of credibility.

BACKGROUND NOTES – DELAWARE - ROMANIA - http://preview.tinyurl.com/subcv - Romanians visit Del. to learn from bird flu experts

Fifteen senior policymakers from Romania are visiting Delaware this week to participate in a nine-day training program on managing avian influenza outbreaks. The Romanian group, which includes representatives from the government, poultry industry and academia, will spend most of its time with avian flu experts from the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical & Community College campuses in Georgetown. […] In the past, other groups from abroad, including one from Kosovo, have come to Delaware to learn about bird flu prevention.

Any FluWikian there who can find out more about this story? It would be interesting to know what they are learning in US that they couldn’t learn (1) nearer home, (2) in another European/Middle East country which experienced bird flu outbreaks

Delawhere – at 14:26

The University of Delaware has a very comprehensive poultry disease research facility (Allen Lab)-- check out the links below for more information on the Delaware/Romania connection. http://tinyurl.com/yknl96 http://tinyurl.com/ync5u9 http://tinyurl.com/ymqyxu

Thanks so much for you kind and generous offer. Don’t know about FrenchieGirl, but there are a bunch of us waiting with bated breath for the test results from the H5N1 that was detected in Sussex County. It has been well over a month for additional testing to be completed and reported. It usually takes only two weeks. What is going on in Delaware? Why isn’t follow-up information being reported by the USDA, DE Department of Natural Resources or the university? We’re getting a bit nervous here.

“Second page has information the green-winged teal:”

Thanks a bunch for such a quick response and the good link. Interestingly, the information for Agenda Item 5 of the Council meeting conflicts with the official USDA data, although there may be a timing issue. USDA states that there was a positive hit for both H5 and N1 in Sussex County, DE. Unfortunately, the minutes to November’s meeting are not yet available and it is difficult to determine if this issue was even discussed in November.

Anyway, I guess we just have to be patient and keep our eyes and ears open for updated news.

Take care.
