Good Home Treatment of Influenza is a simple guide to help people care for flu patients. It appears to be a condensed (17 page) version of his larger (348 page) book titled Bird Flu Manual available on Amazon.

It is available here with other files with have been uploaded to the FluWiki. ftp://wikimember:wiki123@singtomeohmuse.com/ If you are asked, the User Name: wikimember Password: wiki123.

I think Dem also posted a version in Word and a larger print version which is 32 pages.

I have not read the larger work yet. I appreciate all the work involved to write the book. I wish a coalition of organizations would do the same. The format is approx 5″x7″. My first suggestion would be to add a section on disinfection, it could be larger (8×10) , diagrams and tables could be bigger, and have more pictures showing postural drainage, changing sheets in an occupied bed, and some tear out pages of patient care logs. It is easy to criticize. Pictures would add to the cost of production. The book is currently priced at $15 and it is affordable to most. Overall I say BRAVO for having the commitment to write such a large book in the absence of any “official” home care guide.

The Bird Flu Manual includes the following chapters (each has subchapters)…
The Great Bird Flu Pandemic
Influenza Virology 101
Why is the H5N1 Bird Flu So Fearsome
Pandemic Vaccine and Drug Issues
Home Treatment of Influenza
The Signs and Symptoms of Bird Flu
Home Care of Children With Flu
Home Treatment Guide for Professionals
Home Drug Compounding
Pandemic Psychology
Home Preparedness
The Pandemic Survival Group
Essential Food and Water Supplies
Alternative Home Energy
Home Heating, Cooking and Hot Water
Personal Hygiene and Laundry
General Family Preparation
The Great Bird Flu Pandemic Begins

Maybe a public moneys institution would want to create translations of the work, at least the simpler home version, into several languages, and disseminate that as a pdf for all to copy?

It may be easy to critizise, but it’s even easier to think BIG without having to provide the muscle. Grin.

On the other hand, I fear others may be reinventing the wheel. So maybe a wikisite with the content, with restricted authorisation to edit or translate, so that many others will benefit, might be a good thing.

I don’t know.

Anyway, thanks Dr Woodson, and thanks fredness.

I forgot to mention his recommendation for nausea changed from Promethazine Phenergan which is a prescription medicine to Meclizine (for people over 12 years) which may be available without a prescription. It is often taking for motion sickness and also known as Bonine or Dramamine II.

There is an important warning regarding Promethazine aka Phenergan (from above link). Promethazine may cause breathing to slow or stop, and may cause death in children. Promethazine should not be given to babies or children who are younger than 2 years old and should be given with caution to children who are 2 years of age or older. Promethazine should not routinely be used to treat vomiting in children; it should only be used in specific cases when a doctor decides that it is needed. Tell your child’s doctor if your child has any condition that affects his/her breathing such as lung disease, asthma, sleep apnea (stops breathing for short periods of time during sleep). Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medications your child is taking, especially barbiturates such as phenobarbital (Luminal), medications for anxiety, narcotic medications for pain, sedatives, sleeping pills, and tranquilizers. Call your child’s doctor immediately and get emergency medical treatment if your child has difficulty breathing, wheezes, slows or pauses in breathing, or stops breathing. Talk to your doctor about the risks of giving promethazine to your child.
