Forum: If I Had a 1000

Some posts on my earlier thread got me to thinking…

Assume you are as prepped as you are ever going to be. Food, Water, Energy, Cash, Tradeables, Medicinals, PPE, Weapons and ammo are all covered. (Okay, as much as the spouse is going to let you get without committing you.)

And you have 1000 dollars to use however you want on a pandemic plan.

Just buy more stuff?
Give it to a food bank?

What would you do with it?

Dennis in Colorado – at 22:16

One possibility would be to sponsor preparations of a few trusted friends/neighbors.

Buy some ad space for pandemic week awareness to get more than $1000 worth of prepping done when others read it and prep? Help support the fluwikie? Help Melanie? Help Hillbilly Bills church preparedness which seems to be doing the right thing without graft and greed? (food bank where everyone knows your name? so no messing it up) Help Goju advertise his community preps idea? We need way more than $1000. But even a dollar to each of these ideas is money well spent. Who else has ideas?

How about Sams club?

10 bags of DMDG CALROSE RICE 50 LB 889793 $14.42 $144.20
6 bottles of CENTRUM 325 CT 260020 $16.75 $100.50
20 6 packs of SPAM 6 PK - 12 OZ 008378 $10.97 $219.40
50 cases of water32/16.9OZ BOTTLES 988708 $5.08 $254.00\\ 10 bags of PINTO BEANS 50 LB 353375 $28.64 $286.40
subtotal for products $1,004.50

I can then set up a restaurant after the pandemic.

No pandemic after 1 year? Donate the food to a food bank, and rebuy again.

Does anybody know the formula for dry rice and beans per meal or how many meals equal 500 lbs of beans and 500 lbs of rice with spam flavoring?

Malachi – at 23:25

Good list Temp man….Now I would split that up maybe by 4 or 5 and get it out to the anklebiters parents.

shotgun, generator, water filter. Should be close to 1K.

Are we planning for our tax return? If Pandemic hits, won’t be able to count on that!

temp man-Invest in cases of Everclear-triple use (fire, firewater, and medical) and most people when they aren’t trying to survive will want to get tanked as quickly and completely as possible. The hardest living societies are always the hardest drinking societies. You see that time and again throughout history.

Everclear would keep forever and be easy to store, stash underground in numerous “spider holes”.

Temp Man — 25lbs rice and 25lbs beans roughly equals a month’s supply of food per person, at slightly less than 2000 calories per day.

For what it’s worth, most people who are SIPping are not going to need 2,000 calories per day, and will be reluctant to eat that much if the diet is solely rice and beans 3 meals per day in any event, but you need to take into account your situation and plan accordingly. I’ll be bugging out to a remote location and my lifestyle will be at a late 1800′s level so I figure I’m probably going to need more than 2,000 calories per day.

If I ONLY had a $1000 to spend on preps I’d spend it on rice, beans, flour, salt, lard, baking powder, yeast, coffee, sugar, dried milk. And buckets to put it all in. That $1000 would stretch a fairly long way if you only bought staples with it.

Only thing I still need are a couple cords of wood.

Either stocking churches or my neighbors. Unfortunately $1000 for media doesn’t get you very far and I think that most people still ahve to hear it from MSM or personal contacts to get them motivated.

lugon – at 08:10

Folks over at http://www.spreadfirefox.com managed to collect money and pay for a two-page ad at New York Times (I think).

lugon – at 08:19

http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/8769 has the specifics

if we could make friends with them … :)

Good advice, that. I’m off to buy a case of Everclear—you can always mix it with Gatorade!

In the meantime, I buy cheap vodka and run it four times through a Brita filter; comes out tasting better than Grey Goose.

I bought a bunch of easy-to-fix food that they use in prisons.

It’s in 5 gallon buckets, with the instructions taped on the side.

This will be my “give away” food for those in need.

I stored it at the fire station and NOT at my home.

It was around $2K for a pallet load.

That’s my contribution to the community at large pre-pandemic.

Do you have a url?

Bird Guano – at 13:10

Temp man they don’t sell it to the general public.

It was the commercial division of Lumen Foods.

I had to order it through one of my companies.

I’ll look for the invoice when I’m in the office next week.

They sell to the Lousiana State prison system.

You can try and call them. I think the contact info is on the website.

If I had $1000 I would probably prep for a few family members/friends. It wouldn’t be extremely fancy preps, but by providing the basics for them they could skip a few nights out on the town and provide some of the fancier stuff.

I’d really love to set something up for my parents. I think they have quite a bit more than they realize … freezer, canning some stuff, etc. … and they are use to making do. I really want to put together a couple of five gallon buckets with basic foods for them and wished that there was some way to make sure my parents had enough of their medications to get through whatever they need to get through.
