Report Released on Tabletop Exercises for Pandemic Influenza Preparedness in Local Public Health Agencies

Preface This report presents a fully customizable template for a tabletop exercise for pandemic influenza preparedness that can be used by state and local health agencies and their healthcare and governmental partners as an exercise in training, in building relationships, and in evaluation. We refined these exercises by pilot-testing them at three metropolitan-area local public health agencies in three separate states from August through November 2005. The contents of this report will be of interest to public health professionals at the state and local levels who are involved in pandemic preparedness activities in their agencies.

This work was prepared for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for which Dr. William Raub, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Health Emergency Preparedness, served as project officer. The research was conducted in the RAND Health Center for Domestic and International Health Security. A profile of the Center, abstracts of its publications, and ordering information can be found at http://www.rand.org/health/centers/healthsecurity/. RAND Health is a division of the RAND Corporation. More information about RAND is available on our Web site at http://www.rand.org.

I’m-workin’-on-it ‘So are we not going to get news here again?’……and……Graywolf ‘Dont look like it does it!’

Anyone who wishes to post news articles here may do so.

As for the summary- due to other demands on my time I haven’t been and won’t be posting the daily summary on both forums. The reason for this is that the new forum uses html and this forum uses pmwiki markup. To post the summary in both places would mean compiling and typing the summary twice every night and I just don’t have the time to do both. I (and others) have provided the link here to the full summary on the other site for those who wish to access it from here. The layout is quite similar to what it was here and the link takes you directly to the correct place.

That being said, if anyone wants to create a news summary here they are free and welcome to do so.

I know there are alot of changes going on and that not all of them have been easy. I was pretty apprehensive about the new site at first, but after spending a little time exploring I began to appreciate some of the options available there- targeted communication being one of the big ones. It has helped me to adjust initially by also keeping in mind that the whole reason for the creation of the new forum is that this one simply cannot take the high traffic it was experiencing. I hope you both will follow the link and continue to get the news, which I feel is a vital part of fluwiki. After spending a bit of time there, I believe you will feel more comfortable and who knows? you might even get to like it:-)

Thanks MaMa. Been there done that and I guess if I want the news I’ll either go there yet again or follow any links anyone kindly puts up here — or just watch for the swan feet in the air. :-)

Sigh. I shouldn’t say it, but here’s a news flash-I’m really beginning to get sick of hearing/reading/being told to go to the new forum, but so be it.

Someone here posted the other day that they finally realized that this was sort of like having a vacation house as well as a main house, instead of having to force everyone into one house all the time, we could spread out & it was fine. I wish more people could grasp that thought. I’m SIPPING over here for now so I suspect there will be less of everything I was used to finding here — except good companionship from people sharing good ideas.

You’re welcome I’m-workin’-on-it.

I hope those swan feet never go up:-)

First Epidemic Influenza Case Found South Korea Dec. 5

The country’s first cases of influenza this winter were reported yesterday by the Korea Center for Disease Control.Three female children were confirmed to have contracted influenza.

The agency warned that the disease could spread to epidemic proportions from the end of this month.

It’s a little scary to see epidemic and flu in the same sentence coming from South Korea right now. Please google title if you would like more info.

Bug borne fever infects more than One Hundred Thousand in Sri Lanka. Dec 5

The official did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

This has spread so rapidly and they have already said “There are several different fevers. Not all the fevers reported are Chikungunya.” The 100,000 is up from 5,000 and has spread also to the Maldives where they have stated it is not chikungunya.Thousands there are also sick with flu-like symptoms.

Temperatures in Colombo, Sri Lanka right now are in the mid eighties daytime and low 70′s at night; also day after day of thunderstorms. Pretty much ideal mosquito weather.

Anon 451-- I don’t know how to post links, but if you google title you can find the article. From recent articles on the Sri lanka and Maldives fevers the people are becoming quite concerned. How difficult would it be to cover up and protect yourself from the bites? They have run tests on this fever. Please read yesterdays and prior news postings. We are not dealing with a common disease such as dengue or chikungunya. Not in all instances anyway.

Thanks MaMa---- I posted this article yesterday, but since the Sri Lanka numbers are rising so quickly I think I’ll post it again.

Anomalous fever runs rampant in Maldives--- The Maldives is and island nation southwest of Sri lanka in the Indian Ocean.Betcha these fevers are connected.

The Dept.of Public Health and various doctors have confirmed that a viral fever with anomalous symptoms has been running rampant through the Maldives during the course of the last few days. The fever has proved to spread very quickly and easily. Doctors have said that the fever could prove to be very dangerous. The public is becoming more and more concerned about the facts and nature of the viral fever.Confirmed symptoms of the new virus include high fever ,headaches, aches in joints and muscles, dizziness and nausea and weakness.

The public should not panic.

The Dept. of Public Health had suspected that the Previous virus fever had been chikungunya but the tests proved negative.

That’s very interesting. I had posted a couple days ago that I thought it was chik since it’s been running rampant in the countries bordering the Indian Ocean. So chik ruled out, then who knows what it could be????? I’m very interested in watching this now. Please keep us posted!
