China: Better bird flu detection planned in Shenzhen New equipment to help detect potential bird flu cases is to be installed at all of the Shenzhen’s border points. All checkpoints will have infrared thermograph systems from January, the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau announced during the visit of two World Health Organization (WHO) experts Tuesday.

The infrared thermograph system, developed by the inspection and quarantine bureau, has been trialed at Luohu Checkpoint since last December.

Winter is the high season for bird flu and wintering migratory birds arriving in Shenzhen also put the local center for disease control and prevention (CDC) on high alert for the deadly virus.

According to the quarantine bureau, the new thermographs will be first installed at Huanggang Checkpoint, the soon-to-open Futian and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints and Shenzhen airport.

Jane?07 December 2006, 19:11

witness, I didn’t find anything but plant disease when I googled Meghalaya.

You do such a great job at finding these stories. Do you copy some sentences with your computer or by typing them in? If you use your computer, with apple + c or control + c, then you can copy the address at the top of the story the same way. If it isn’t too long, it will fit, like the Jaffna address I did. If it’s long, you can do this thing: link description? where the second part is whatever you want to name it “link description” and the first part is the long address you copied. There’s a vertical line in between them, and 2 brackets on each end. No spaces in between any of it, except if you want them in the “link description” you make up. The vertical line is on the keyboard above the enter/return key. It gets easier with practice.

Tink?07 December 2006, 19:14

Thank you witness and Jane

Jane?07 December 2006, 19:14

The wiki computer system made a change in what I wrote, of course. I forgot to leave spaces so it would ignore the “computer, please make a link” instruction, and show you what it looks like. It’s at the bottom of this page, in the blue part, where it says link_url.

witness?07 December 2006, 19:41

Thankyou Jane and Tink ---Jane for the Meghalaya story go to google news and type in the title of the article. I am most likely the most computer illiterate person on fluwikie. And I’m a novice typer.I just type in sentences from each article.Jane, you have given clear and simple instructions that I most likley won’t be able to follow. The only reason I am able to find these articles is it’s kinda like shopping. And I am really good at that. That’s the only reason I learned to use the computer at all.I will try though. Thankyou both.

Mysterious Diseases Nepal Dec. 7

Just recently, another mystery disease struck the mountainous region of eastern Nepal. A number of inhabitants of a Himalayan village came down with something that nobody has been able to figure out. People started becoming sick and died.

Jane?07 December 2006, 19:54

witness, you type all this? You’re so industrious. I’ve been taking the easy way and bluing out a sentence or address with the cursor/mouse, then apple + c for my mac, then apple + v on the wiki page. Once I hit something wrong, and I got 2 pages on the screen. I got scared and did something to make it go away. But maybe it would make copying easier if both pages were there at the same time. I just make one overlap the other, and switch back and forth, though.

OK, I’ll do google news this time.

Jane?07 December 2006, 19:59

India: 169 dead, 134 from unknown cause. Dengue has been ruled out. Some cases tested positive (but they didn’t say for what). Link to witness’ story:

Could one of you please post some of this on your new Forum? The numbers of sick and dying is very important and appears to not be receiving the amount of attention it needs.

KimT07 December 2006, 23:03

I did a quick copy and paste into the news forum over there. Hopefully it will get attention and more people will reswearch it.

Monotreme07 December 2006, 23:24

Anon_451 has asked me to comment on the diseases being mentioned on this thread. First, let me say I am certain there are probably deaths that are due to H5N1 that have not been identified as such due to the many other diseases in Southeast Asia with similar symptoms. However, after looking at the various news stories, I don’t see anything that points unequivocably at H5N1. When I first started following H5N1, I too would get alarmed at the many “mystery deaths” in this part of the world. And that was over a year ago. Unfortunately, there are more “fevers” in India and adjacent regions than there are names for the diseases. Sanitation is poor, ignorance rife and health care for the poor virtually non-existent. So, I would not get too alarmed by these stories. I think they are worth following, but just keep in mind that the background level of disease and death in poor tropical areas is very high. Deaths often go undiagnosed. This is what will make identifying the start of a pandemic so difficult if it begins in this region. The “signal” will have to be very high.
