Forum: Nonfood Grade 55 Gallon Drums

I can get used 55 gallon drums that previously held detergent or other nonfood products. Would like to find some food grade liners to install in the drums so we could store drinking water in them. Has anyone found a good source for 55 gallon liner bags? Or is there a good reason not to do this? thanks

Personally, I would worry that whatever was in the drum, before you got them, would leach through the liner and into your water. Now, I would still use these, but for toliet water. Say as rainwater collection containers. But we have a septic system, so I know we can still use our toliets. If your on city water/sewer you might not be able to use your toliets even if you had these drums filled with water.

Another thought, if they held detergent, you could of coarse use that water for washing cloths.

Use them for storing water to flush the toilet. There are chemical remnants that will leach from non-food grade containers, or chemicals in the container plastic itself, that will kill you just as easily as BF could - only slower.

Use only certified food-grade containers for storing water.

PS: liners work better for storing dry ingredients.
