Forum: Preps and Emergency Folder

Okay, many of us have been here on FluWiki long enough to have seen the many preps threads, the multitude of recipes, the ideas for survival if and when the power goes out. Let’s see how we do with this suggestion, and it might take a little bit of a Scavenger Hunt to do this.

Let’s put as many of the FluWiki links to the old threads here, so people can find them easier and in one place, and print them out. Some of the very old threads may not be available soon, and those won’t be working, but hopefully, many of the thread series should be available.

Perhaps label each suggestion with things like RECIPES, or POWER, MEDICINES; things like that. Each post could be cut and pasted into a reader’s word processor and printed out for a folder to keep available for them and their families…

Petticoat Junction – at 18:08

Bill, you beat me to it, lol! I was just thinking the same thing.

A cursory brainstorm ~ please help fill in with links, info, etc.

Sections that would make sense to have printed off in an Emergency Folder:

1) Health

2) Sick Room info

3) Disinfection info

4) Water Purification info

5) Heating/Lighting

6) Food

7) Specialized sections as needed

8) Security

9) Bug-out page

Petticoat Junction – at 18:08

Geeze, I messed up the formatting on that one, didn’t I?

Try not to just copy the URL into the post. Some can be wicked long! Try to use the PMWiki markup language shown at the bottom of the page.

Type 2 left brackets = [[ Then copy the address completely immediately after it Type a single pipe = | (this is the key directly above the Enter key on most keyboards) Then type in the description in your own wording And end it with two right brackets = ]]

That will help to avoid side-scroll on the page. Thanks

Bronco Bill – at 18:59

That didn’t work.

Type 2 left brackets = (this is the key directly above the Enter key on most keyboards)
Then type in the description in your own wording And end it with two right brackets =
?

Bronco Bill – at 19:02

Sheesh…just follow the instructions at the bottom of the page. ;-(

A much more powerful effort would be to collect the info, organize it into categories, and post it on the main wiki. That’s what I’ve been doing with the recipes for canned dry food. (I know I picked an easy one to organize, but hey, got to start somewhere.) Then there’s the opportunity to fix formatting, identify holes in information, identify conflicting information, etc. If TSHTF, people won’t want to read through page after page of wandering conversation only to find that nobody talked about just what they were after.

Petticoat Junction – at 19:33

Mari at 19:19 - this page arose from a discussion on this thread…the intention is to get all the brainstorming and pertinent info into one thread so that it can be transferred on to a wiki page. At least that’s my understanding of it.

FWIW, I have found here at home that it’s worked well to actually have three folders ~ one for health/info, one for food storage & recipes, and one for household issues (water, elec, etc). There’s a LOT of information out there! It will be good to get it more centralized and easily accessible.

POWER

Solar Generators for Dummies. A lengthy series of threads that has morphed from “Solar only” to other power sources and ideas.

BB: Help, please. I’m a self-taught internet surfer and I think I missed the class on copy/pasting links. I do know how to use TinyURL and I understand how to do the pmwiki markup, but I don’t know how to get more than one link in a post (like Okieman at 18:35). It seems obvious than I should “gather” all the links I want to put in a post, but I seem to be able to copy/paste only one link at a time. If I jump out of the post to go get the next link, my post disappears.

xray – at 01:03

I am collecting hand sanitizer Disposable LED flashlights that last 150 hours, and an extrra can opener.

Bronco Bill – at 08:44

Swann – at 00:49 --- You’ll only be able to create one link at a time…

Open 2 browsers. One to where you want to post, and the other where the page is that you want to copy the address from. Some browsers, like Netscape 8, use tabbing, so open a second tab to the second page. You should be able to switch back and forth like that.

Create your first link, then move down 2 spaces, create your second link, and so on…
Or, add a space and two backslashes (the key above the Enter key) and hit enter to go to the next line. That should eliminate spaces between lines

I’ve put my receipts from my on-line orders in my folder. Helps with inventory and the next level of ordering. I like to try out the stuff in the #10 cans so I only order one can, try it out and then order larger quantity. Also if you note on the receipt what you like or what didn’t work out, shipping time(as in how long did it take to arrive), customer service…also helps you remember who you’ve ordered from since I’ve looked at a lot of sites. You’ll also have the phone numbers in case the internet is down.

I have a solar section also, plans for the solar food dehydrator that was just posted, solar ovens, and if I win the lottery solar power…

I need to put together a section on what to do if something happens to DH and I. Not just next of kin phone numbers but all the information like bank numbers, mortgage, life insurance, any valuables we might have left…. If the world eventually returns to normal I hope my relatives can use this info to support and raise my kids.

I think the index is a better way of organizing information for future reference.

Kathy in FL – at 10:38

In case this hasn’t been suggested yet …

Three things that I believe really need to be put in a safe place for referencing are:

1. A household inventory.

2. A family medical history … at least 2 generations back.

3. A family genealogical history … as far back as you can take it.

Each of these items could prove invaluable to have already on-hand and organized even without a pandemic threat situation.

this is my new “give away packet”

..here we have this tuna cans with some different asian sauses with a litle vegetables in. A good “packet meal” would be one tunabox, a bag of rice and a smaller bag of different small lentils / beans. This I think would be a very complete meal. Make some of this packets.

Add a bottle of 90% alchohol (I buy consentrated carwindow fluid, very cheap and is ethanol), it can be used as both hand sanitizer and for other desinfecting use. It will also work as fuel for a improvised alchohol stove made of empty aluminium drink cans

http://www.csun.edu/~mjurey/stove.html.

Anyone can make this stowes, only print out the DIY from the net and put in the packages. The handsantizer would be bether with 5% glyserol added for skin protection, but a moisture cream after use is also fine.

A real “ragnarock” packet would be a 10 liter plastic bucket with lid, filled with:

?1 Doulton gravity filter. 36$ ? (Or just the bleach..) You make a hole in the bucket and place the filter in it. Clean water for months..

-the food mentioned, + a bottle of olive oil.

-3 alu cans with sugar cola. to make the stove, and to boil in. Perhaps a cheap camping kasserole also.

-1 liter of alchohol (carwindow fluid is perfect, due to its awailablitity and low price)

-0,5 liter of bleach

-some instant coffe

-1 very small spraycan for hand desinfecting (with the alcohol),

- paper tissues

-a few disposable masks N95, and some more surgical masks, Preferbaly cloth ones to wash and reuse)

-a packet of painkillers

-a cheap thermometer.

-ORT powder mix

-a small and cheap led lamp

-a printed guide on sick treatment, water etc etc.

this should keep a family on its feets for a while until they can start handeling the situation… And is not that expensive.

Don’t forget to make a complete list of all key account numbers, address and phone numbers (banks, insurance, etc.) Also a listing of key contacts for emergencies - responders, neighbors, friends, etc. Keep a copy at home on file, in your safety deposit box, in your bug-out-bag and with someone not in the same region as you (in case of natural disaster). Many Katrina survivors have said that having that info handy saved them days and days of aggrivation trying to contact people.

LauraB – at 14:59

Excellent suggestion. Also, if you have children in college, (or are yourself), and you have filed a FAFSA form for Federal Financial Aid, keep a copy of the form AND your PIN number if you filed electronically.

Several months ago, I read a post about how to create a cheap BOB storage container for important papers. Get a short section of PVC drain pipe (3″ or 4″ in diameter) and two end caps. Put copies of your papers inside and glue the end caps on with PVC glue. Remember to make the pipe section a little longer than the width of your documents so you don’t damage them if you have to saw the container open.

procrastination is an awful habit… lol

EnoughAlreadyat 23:40

Originally, all my initial reading was on the “other” part of this website… trying to figure out the validity of a flu pandemic. I copied some pertinent sources & keep them in the back of my “folder” (a 3-ring binder.) Those are handouts I generally give to somebody I want to listen and/or understand the potential threat of a pandemic. I looked at information for health care professionals, as well as the difference in flu (and regular flu and THIS flu) and a cold. I started familarizing myself with names of people out there warning about “when” this pandemic hits… not if. I read about staying operational during a pandemic… on every level I could find.

Next, from the same part of the website, I started collecting specific information: what I needed to do to prepare my family. Amounts & type needed in OTC medicines and medical alternatives, foods, dry goods, specific caloric and nutritional needs for various family members over time, etc. Often this lead to other sources like FEMA, OSHA, Red Cross, USDA, etc.

Then, I entered the forum to figure out how to best collect what I needed. How to organize it, to get ideas.

My notebook is organized like this: storage (food, etc., amount needed, what I have, what I need and how to store the stuff)--- Essential nutrients & calories, and sources --- Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (includes information like Postural Drainage & Percussion fact sheet from cystic fibrosis foundation… from a thread I didn’t bookmark, oral rehydration salts & cereal-based oral rehydration formulas & diets for dehydration therapy and refeeding management, homeopathic/herbal/OTC/”other sources” medical interventions) --- Water (sources, storage, potable, washing) --- Gardening (raised beds, pots, planting in my region, etc) --- Energy (list/info of what I “can do” and a dream list, too. Also, info on “how to” do stuff like repair stuff or make stuff.) --- Recipes (mostly from scratch stuff (yogurt, butter, mayonaise, bread, how people did things 50+ years ago), canning, dehydrating, salves --- Simple Respiratory Mask (info printed from those threads, CDC) --- Resources (websites, addresses, phone numbers of places that may interest me at some point… but certainly of anywhere I have made a purchase from or found information from… also book &/or professional references that interest me)

So far… that is my “notebook.” Sorry, I can’t make that bottom of the page link stuff work. Since you asked us not to use the address window click-copy-paste method, I can’t provide links. (In an envelope I have how to set up a sick room. But, for me, that isn’t going to be feasible. I collected information I thought pertinant just in case…)

aaargh, I need a bigger notebook. DD is reading Alas, Babylon and it’s freaking me out, so I’m making sure I have everything in my binder and it’s just not big enough. Maybe instead of tabs for each section I’ll have a binder for each section.

But at least reading this book (for her english class) makes her understand why we have so much stuff stored away.
