A serious news report (credit to Flutrackers) has just been posted about a co-infected patient that died, and researchers are looking at and suspecting a hybird virus. They are both (as far as I can gather) RNA viruses, so if we accept recombination, I guess it is possible. Thoughts anyone - if true it si not a good evolution.

Report as follows

Thai attention birds and beasts flu and Dengue fever virus whether “hybrid” http://tinyurl.com/jrfw2

Information origin: Medicine net renewal time: 2006–8−6 12:12:28 North Thailand threw over collection government office 17 year old men after to infect the H5N1 high pathogenicbirds and beasts fluvirus and the Dengue fever virus to recently does not govern died. The Thai experts at present highly pay attention to this case of illness, has begun to study these two kind of virus whether in this patient in vivo occurrence “hybrid”.

The Thailand public health officials on 26th said that, threw over the collection government office to reach may county this man after bury more than 20 causes of death unclear domesticated fowls last week, had the high fever symptom immediately and is escorted to the local hospital treatment. After being hospitalized approximately in a week, this patient lungs infect intensify, the high fever does not draw back, does not govern on 24th died.

After the examination, the expert has discovered the H5N1 high pathogenic birds and beasts flu virus and the Dengue fevervirus inthis male in vivo. At present, whether is the expert studying these two kind of virus to exchange the gene in this patient in vivo and from this produces “the reorganization virus” newly. The researcher believed that, still the not ample evidence indicatedthe birds and beasts fluvirus and the Dengue fever virus “the reorganization virus” has the characteristic which disseminates in the humanity between.

The Dengue fever is one kind by mosquito dissemination anxiousvenereal diseasestoxinfection sickness, the symptom including arise suddenly the high fever to follow the fear to be cold, the joint and the forehead severe pain and so on. Also reported according to the Thai media, has not continuously had the birds and beasts flu epidemic situation after17months, in Thailand north the area recently the succession were many the domesticated fowl to die in groups the event, the partial local death birds and beasts were confirmed infected the birds and beasts flu virus. The United Nations food and agriculture organization appealed Thai Government completes each work to prevent with all one’s strength the epidemic situation large-scale explodes.

This could be a very scary idea. That said, I think it’s important to differentiate between whether a hybrid has formed or whether the patient is simply co-infected. I would not at all be surprised to see a higher mortality rate among co-infected people. What a rotten fate for them. But until the researchers isolate a hybrid virus, I may restrain my inclination to re-re-re-inventory my preps.

The potential is immense, depending on what genes get swapped, if the researchers’ suspicions are correct. Imagine a panflu transmissable by mosquitos, or a Dengue fever that lurked and evolved in birds and pigs and everything else that can carry H5N1. *shudder*

Flumonitor: The 17yo died around July 26th. This story was first run in an identical version on August 6th - I’m not sure why it has been re-run now since there is no new news - just the same article published on 8/06/06:

There will definitely be dual infections found: dengue/H5N1, chickungunya/dengue, etc. Testing and diagnosis will be a nightmare, and I’ll leave it to the virologists to ponder whether any mutant strains can actually develop since that’s all speculation at this time.
