Are there any left, or have the all moved out of state ??

LOL

Bird Guano – at 14:04

just passing through – at 04:34 I asked a friend who works for Kaiser Hospital as a RN (31 years) what was being done where she works and she said she remembers some talk about it a few months ago but nothing really.

WHAT!!!!! I was in shock. So, this tells me that Kaiser isn’t prepared or at least her hospital and her department aren’t.

I have done some unrelated consulting work for Kaiser in the past 6 months.

Their chief epidemiologist isn’t on board. Thinks it’s a non-event.

I’ve seen his powerpoint.

Not impressive, and frankly a bit disappointing for Kaiser since they are known for being proactive.

Bronco Bill – at 14:07

I think I’m the most recent to have moved. Kristy in CA was first, then Poppy, now me. Kristy went to CO, Poppy to TX…I said “No way!! I’m goin’ all the way to the other coast! I need my ocean!!”

Bird Guano – at 14:19

I’m on the ocean. But I like the Pacific :-)

Yosemite Gal – at 00:26 Hello from the Gold Country! Just an F.Y.I. If you’re interested in buying the “Nanomask” variety of face mask (Emergency Filtration Products Inc.)

Stay FAR away from the NanoMask. The FDA has issued an injunction a few months ago against claims they make on effectiveness, and it’s not on the NIOSH birdflu approved list of respirators.

Stick with a NIOSH approved respirator and P100 filters.

You may be betting your life on it.

Just and FYI - my order from mredepot arrived today, packed very well too. Now that is an amazing turnaround… That’s got to be the fastest internet order ever for me! Definately an outstanding company!!!!!!

Thank you again Fully Prepped!!!!

Mom of 312 – at 21:35

Oops, wrong thread - that’s what I get for lurking (sorry)!!

Scaredy Cat – at 21:58

I don’t think Kaiser is prepared. If they are I think it’s, like Leo7 said on another thread, a well-kept secret. One they’ve kept from everyone who works in the E.R.

Hey Bill, I have my ocean. It just tends to have rapidly swirling air over it now and then. Glad to hear you finally made it out to the east coast.

Bronco Bill – at 10:29

Poppy – at 10:23 --- Hey there! Yep, made it in record time…for me, anyway! 3 1/2 days of non-stop driving (‘cept to buy gas).

Y’know, I’ll always call CA home, and I’ll always believe that that Great Blue Pacific is much better than this nasty, churned-up, brown-water, hurricane-spewing Atlantic Ocean, but on the other hand, Fresno was 3 hours from any accessible water, and here where I am now, I’m a 15-minute walk from the James River and a 1-hour drive to Chesapeake Bay. I think I’m gonna like it here. Except when the Prez decides to come into town during rush hour and clog traffic on the Interstate for 6 hours!!!

I know what you mean, part of me will always be a California girl. Even where I lived I was quite a way from any water. Here there is at least a nice big lake within a short drive. It is beginning to feel more like home. Still I do miss the food in California. These folks have been dipping in the hot sauce too long. Right now I would just about kill for some decent Chinese food. There just isn’t any good Chinese food here unless I make it myself.

Sounds like you’ve landed yourself in a nice place. I wouldn’t mind that location myself.

heddiecalifornia – at 19:47

I miss old California, and I still live here in the town I grew up in!! My mom doesn’t want to leave, there are 6 generations of her family in the graveyards here, and so we stay. My dream, however, was always to move north to Eastern Washington and keep huskies and enjoy snow sports. I lived in Spokane when I was in college, and have always loved that area. I imagine I should still check it out for retirement, but I am afraid I would find that it, too, has been hit with ‘progress’ and development. And I have arthritis, too, so maybe the high desert someplace would be as good.

LA Escapee – at 20:23

heddiecalifornia:

If you have arthritis,I recommend the Southwest desert. My pain has gone down drastically, and even in the winter when it’s just as cold, I don’t get as stiff by a long shot, due to the dryness. I was really starting to worry about arthritis in my old age, but this climate has really reduced it. Something to consider.

And I miss “old California” too - but I go back every couple of weeks, and although it’s still pretty, there’s just a ton of problems there. Noplace is perfect, but when I come back, I feel like I’ve left a lot of baggage behind.

cactus – at 20:31

And, I miss the “old” Southwest desert. LOL. The one with few people, orange groves in South Phoenix, and almost every home had an orange tree and a grapefruit.

But, as my boys tell me,”Mom the streets weren`t paved when you were young”. Almost true, if you think af all the roads that weren`t ,then.

heddiecalifornia – at 22:31

A ton of problems — yep, you are right! We’ve had so much really serious crime in our town recently it’s been amazing. It’s like a simmering anarchy. Too many ‘detached’ people without support systems, friends and families, not enough resources for healthy living, some serious predators, and untreated mental problems.

The only thing is, California always seems to be on the cutting edge of trends — and if we are to move anywhere else in the US it will only be a matter of time before the very same problems, people, trends and behaviors will be catching up in the rest of the country. If we can find some way to engage people in living within real communities that value them and their talents, find some better ways of getting people to utilize true opportunities and avoid traps and scams and ripoffs.

What’s that old saying about ‘wherever you go, well, there you are.’ Complete with all the baggage, problems, and habits that caused the problems in the first place. I was really surprised in checking out possible places to move how much alike all the subdivisions everywhere are just about the same — right down to the architecture (faux victorian and tuscan mansions are very big) and even street names! Just like Pleasanton, California.

Maybe a pandemic will make the cultural changes we won’t make ourselves. Make us value community and working together and looking out for each other. Possibly California has gotten to be the careless place it is because we have been able to put off epidemics (and other ‘natural’ consequences) for so long already.

I have a very bleak view of the future; sadly, it is beginning to look to me that reduced populations and reductions in consumption, simplification of life styles and appreciation of nature may be ‘good’ results of a pandemic. Is it wrong to think that perhaps it could be a ‘good’ thing? The ultimate character building event for the survivors? Natural selection at work?

Well, back to prepping. Anybody know where I can find powdered eggs in quantity in the bay area?

heddiecalifornia - I miss “old” California myself. I’m afraid it is gone forever though. We left quite a few family graves behind when we left Tracy, California in June, at least four generations worth. It’s hard to leave them but one cannot stay someplace because of graves in a cemetery. As for your arthritis, I have it too and my joints ache no matter where I am. Sometimes we only get one chance to follow our dreams. I have wanted out of California for years. I have sensed a growing danger in remaining, so I am glad to be elsewhere. Your comments below really struck a cord with me and could easily describe Tracy.

Have you checked out Dom’s Outdoor Outfitters in Livermore? They sell all manner of outdoors and camping equipment, including Mountain House foods and other foods of that type. BTW Mountain House Foods has a warehouse/facility in Tracy on Larch Road. Dom’s website: http://domsoutdoor.com/

Darn Californians with their “side scroll”…LOL!!

Bird guano05 December 2006, 14:10

Actually that’s an extension of the Tracy Army Depot. Mtn. House maintains it under contract.

Heddie from Oct. 20 -

I’m afraid I share some of the pessimism. I’d like to believe what you said how pandemic might instigate the changes we won’t make ourselves. But I feel like the after-effects would be like post-Katrina. Look where they ended up. Crime is worse in N.O. than it ever was, and the economic problems are far worse too. The after effects were hard to imagine. I can only hope this pandemic doesn’t actually happen… Sorry to be so depressing :~(

cactus05 December 2006, 16:36

Hi johnO, We all hope that it doesn`t happen. But…

As hope is not a plan, most of us have made a plan or 2.or 10 ;-)

I work for Kaiser here in northern CA. The organization has given no information that I know of to Doctors or other staff regarding Avian Flu/planning. So, if TPTB are planning, they are not telling anybody else! Our local infectious disease person also seems not too worked up about avian flu, certainly not championing any agenda or encouraging discussion.

We did receive a memo earlier in the fall from administration saying that they were going to put more aggressive repiratory precautions in place for this winter/normal flu and cold season. This would be more signs telling patients and staff to cover your cough, stay home when sick, use masks. I have not even seen TPTB able to pull this off. Nothing happening! If they can’t offer staff propper PPE now I hate to even invision a pandemic. Anyone that reports to work will basically be running into the sharp and of a bayonette.

Bird guano06 December 2006, 14:14

I’ve seen the Kaiser PPT given by their head of Infectious Diseases.

They are downplaying it to the extream. VERY outdated information.

I wouldn’t want to be an employee there when a pandemic hits.

Bird guano06 December 2006, 14:15

Sorry, PPT is short for powerpoint presentation on avian flu.

Kelly P?14 December 2006, 00:50

Is this the California prepper’s log? Just wanted to introduce myself. I live in the SF bay area.
