Any preppers here in Maryland?

Anonymoose – at 22:15

Me, in Montgomery County. (Though calling me a prepper might be overly generous.)

Kelly – at 14:06

I can relate. I’m in the pre-prepping stage, I guess: making room for a stockpile by getting rid of everything in the basement that I don’t really need, reading more than I probably should, scaring my friends and family….

Becca – at 14:23

Yes, I’m in Harford County. Seems like I’m the only prepper here. Although the local paper just had a front page article about Bird Flu. Soon there will be more like me.

xamax – at 14:39

I am in Germantown (MC), we have made an effort to pickup extra items everytime we do a sam’s club run. we have a pretty big pantry - perhaps 2 weeks worth of food.

you know what happens even when we have a minor snow storm .. Giant and Safeway quickly run out of the basic items. I cant imagine what it will be like if we have an event that disrupts things for 1 or 2 months.

madame moutard – at 09:52

Also prepping in Montgomery County Maryland - I live a town or two over from xamax, although I go to the Costco, a couple blocks from the Sam’s Club (assuming you use the Gaithersburg one). Prepping still in the rudimentary stages (water, canned food, toilet paper - maybe a month’s worth of each; the list of over the counter stuff in Dr. Woodson’s downloadable guide). No prescription medicines or concrete plans on what to do if the electricity goes out.

That’s OK Chesapeake, I got to the link (thanks!) and I do remember hearing about that outbreak.

Since you’re in the neighborhood, I have to ask - have you noticed anything unusual? I live right on the bay and I’m trying not to feel nervous about all the seagulls basically vanishing about two months ago. I’m not seeing much in the way of geese, ducks or swans lately either. I found this was true all the way down to Cambridge this past weekend on our boat, and marina people confirmed that they’ve seen almost no seagulls for several weeks now. It might not mean anything, but it’s still kind of eerie not seeing them around anymore (though, I’m happy to not have to hose off all the bird poop from my pier every day).

Chesapeake – at 08:56

I’m on the western shore. I haven’t noticed the seagulls gone.

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 10:02

I’m prepping too.. down here on the Eastern Shore. I have some family quietly prepping but most people that I have said something to think I am a lunatic. I’ve talked to some people at work and a few of them might be quietly prepping but I doubt it.

FLgardenmomat 10:27

Eastern Shore Prepper I’m in FL, but my family lives on the Eastern Shore. They are taking this seriously and starting to prep. I do know what you mean though about people thinking you are a lunatic. I am familiar with the local personality. Did you grow up there?

Habanero – at 15:28

I’m just over the line from Pocomoke City in Accomack County VA………..a lot of folks I know are prepping, but most of them are involved in the poultry industry and take this seriously. However they are more concerned with losing jobs than with getting sick themselves.

Average Concerned Mom – at 06:27

Hi Maryland preppers!

I live just outside of DC in Prince George’s County. I recently checked the flu.maryland.gov site and was NOT impressed with the pandemic preparations. By comparison, I hunted down Illinois’ plan (for a friend of mine who lives outside Chicago, to show her that people were taking this situation seriously) and it was fantastic. I mean, it seemed very detailed, pulled no punches about what could happen and what they would do, frankly seemed quite reassuring. Made me want to live in Illinois.

My question is, do you think Maryland is all done with planning? And who do you think I cuold contact that would have an impact if so? Would you like to help me?

Chesapeake – at 06:47

Hello ACM…I am not impressed with Marylands plans either. I don’t expect much help from them anyway. Look into your county plans, those are the ones that will make a difference to you. It is a lot eaiser to make a difference localy. Calvert County here…and I think I am the only one prepping….LOL

LMWatBullRunat 10:39

Plan, what for? If it doesn’t happen, and we sounded the alarm, all of our campaign contributers in the poultry industry will support the other guy at election time. If it does happen, why the Feds will help us, they’ll just *have to*, and anyhow, folks’ll be too busy to worry about ancient history.

Prepping here, will depart for our country place with friends if that seems wise

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 13:06

I wasn’t impressed w/ Maryland’s plan either- not sure that the local counties on the Eastern Shore have too much in place yet—

FLGardenMom- yup- raised here— went away for school and came back to raise my family here- There are a lot of old timers here who have a lot of knowledge about SIP having drown up on farms and having to be self-sufficient back before the bay bridge was built--- but, the newer generations.. wow— they don’t even know what a clothesline is…

Strider – at 13:33

Eastern Shore Prepper; I hope you’ve had better luck talking to others in regards to preps than I have. I rented my church’s meeting hall, (Princess Anne), posted signs all over town, faxed every business, verbally told everyone that I saw. Had a flight attendant, local police chief, county health dept, university Chicken head (head of the dept, not a talking chicken head ;)) and a County commissioner lined up to speak. I had a stand at the town street fair on PanFlu (no one was interested, but many came over to pet my dog…)

Two days before the meeting the speakers started dropping out (relatives graduation, going to Dr’s, schedule too full etc.) By the time for the talk, no speakers other than myself. No problem, I’ve spent over 2000 hrs following PanFlu, and I used to teach hydroponics and aquaculture at Penn State so I am comfortable rambling on. No worry.

EXCEPT, come the evening of the talk, only ONE person showed up! And he was there to protest flu vaccines, felt it was all a trick to subjugate us by the One World Govt. So make that a negative one person.

BTW, this county, like many others, has NO viable plan, too much infighting amongst the powers that be.

I tried. Spent my money and time to spread the word. I can lead the mule(headed) to water, but I can’t make them drink.

So I strided back to my (rented) farm and rolled up the driveway. Luckily I made sure that none of the advertising gave my address nor phone number. The mule-headed that didn’t want to hear it now won’t come to find me when TSHTF. If they do, that loveable dog that they played with is also protection dog trained, as are two of the other three dogs on the property.

Good luck, stay dry, and keep prepping!

15 June 2006

Chesapeake – at 07:09

Strider…what a shame, I applaud your effort. Not to worry, they won’t follow you home, they think you are nuts. I have a good friend in Princess Anne, not a prepper yet but I keep poking at him.

Strider – at 08:26

Chesapeake…I live so afar out in the boonies that new EMT’s are sent out here on a dark and stormy night for training on finding “out of the way” properties. They invariably get lost in the forest and have to call for help.

If your friend is IN Princess Anne, suggest that he stop by Winks sporting goods, and check on a HighPoint .40 carbine $235 with laser. With a MAJOR prison 4 miles out of town it may not be a bad idea. If TSHTF and they open the doors at the prison, Princess Anne is the first town between there and the long road back to Baltimore.

Also mention to him that in two weeks the University in town that I work at will be selling winter wheat harvest for cheap, good long storage grain in a 55 gal barrel.

Good luck, stay dry, and keep prepping!

North East of Rising Sun – at 08:50

Cecil County prepper here. Seem to be the only one taking it seriously. County plan at this point links back to the state plan. Close to large university and concerned about what their plans are for this. I’ve got the garden going in full swing and I am prepping some long range things from Honeyville Grains as well as stocking up on canned goods and camping supplies. Anyone else from Cecil out there?

Habanero,

Hope you did not get washed away/lost power in the rains last night! I’m 15 miles north of you (as the eagles fly), and could see the storms swirling around your area before they hit mine. I lost a LOT of limbs on the trees, lost power several times, and had a window air conditioner BLOWN out of the window.

Some good news for both you and I: since the great megatropolus of Pocomoke City (all 3000 people) now has a a Walmart and a Lowes hardware store, we don’t need to run 45 miles north to the Salisbury MD shopping area for supplies. Word on the street also says that Home Depot is coming to the area (if they get a Lowes, Home Depot usually follows, and vise versa).

I’ll be down your way today. We should meet at the McDonalds sometime to discuss the local situation. It would be nice to actually chat face-to-face with a fellow prepper as there doesn’t seem to be too many of us in the area.

Chesapeake: which side of the Bay do you live on, the continental side or the DelMarVa side? So far we have three of us on the DelMarVa side (Habanero, Eastern Shore Prepper and me.)

North East of Rising Sun – at 08:56

Concerned in E Town — Elkton I take it? Wonder if the local Extension office would be receptive to adding any BF prep information to their table at the CC Fair.

Anonymoose – at 09:01

I live near Gaithersburg, where there’s a Costco and a Sam’s Club almost across the street from each other. I’m thinking about getting a membership at one of the stores, but I don’t know which one to pick. Has anyone here shopped at both stores? Do you have an opinion about which one is better? I’m interested in low prices, but a broad range of merchandise is even more important. Thanks….

Chesapeake, I think the storm that is racing towards me across the Bay is coming from your county. I thank you for sending the farmers rain, but I think we have enough now, the corn is floating and the chickens are swimming like ducks. Now if you had sent it two months ago when it was dry…. :)

I hope your son enjoyed his stay at SU. Beautiful campus. I’m down at the other Univ (UMES) 12 miles south of Salisbury’s SU in Princess Anne.

Strider Bump – at 08:54

Chesapeake at 08:47 .. I’m glad he got to enjoy the surf. Although it’s only 15 miles straight line away from me, it’s rare that I get down to play in the water. I get to within 200 yards of it for work (collecting underwater grasses, SAV) for research at my Univ, but just never get a chance to stroll that extra 200 yards. My grad student is even worse, he LIVES within 100 yd of the beach at Ocean City, and hasn’t made it that last 100 yds yet this year. Maybe someday…

Then again, with all the rains recently, and global warming etc., maybe the ocean will come to me ;)

I’d like to meet and share ideas with other MD/Va preppers too. Since it’s summer, and the fall/winter months don’t look too healthy, perhaps we should take advantage of the season for a nice relaxing meet at the beach. I know it’s a long run for those near DC (3 hrs if the bridge traffic isn’t too bad :), but it would be a GREAT stress reliever for all of us.

An ideal spot would be at Assateague Island National Seashore (just south of Ocean City MD.) Camping there is fairly low cost, and chatting around a bonfire on the beach as the full moon rises out of the ocean lets the prepping stress flow away.

If anyone is interested, I can get there early on a Friday to reserve the required sites. I can also supply a tent for anyone that doesn’t have one. Only foreseen problems are the mosquitoes (bring PLENTY of bug repellant!) and ponies wondering through campsite at night (watch where you walk, they aren’t potty trained.)

If anyone is interested in a meet, post your interest and we can work on it.

Sorry about stepping out of line :(

But dinner sounds good:))

Gee, I’m starting to sound like my Labrador!

momtoRJ – at 20:21

The same discussion is happening on DC/Northern Virginia thread. We need suggestions of diners or restaurants and places and times. More than one place and date and locale is fine. Then maybe we can get several of us together! I just don’t have an idea of how many we have and where!

Strider – at 21:27

Probably the best restaurant (quality of food, ambiance, uniqueness) that I have EVER been to is The 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant, 5240 Paint. Branch Parkway, College Park MD. Styled after a WW1 French airbase, and sits at the end of the runway for a little used airport adjacent to College Park. Best food I’ve ever tasted! Great outdoor area for chatting after the meal.

Long drive for us near the beach, but worth it. I’d suggest noon rather than evening, it tends to get crowded later. Weekend is better for my DW and me. Sunday works best (less traffic on the Bay Bridge.)

Then again, just about any place will suit as long as we can all get together and exchange ideas. That in itself is worth the long drive over the bridge.

On vacation in Ocean City but did lots of prepping during the week. Visited several dollar stores and got 2 dozen evaoporated milk. Worked on my inventory of food and decided what is missing then shopped some more and got more fruits. The more I plan, the more there is to do. I think I’m up to 3 months now. I am planning for my kids, their spouses and their kids since they won’t. We started the process of installing a whole house generator in June and it looks like we may finally have it completed by August. We are going thru SMECO since they coordinate everything…the installation, the propane, electrician and final checks. The unit automatically starts as soon as the power goes off. We get to choose what we want to run. In the case of the BF, we’ll just use it to run our pump for our well and maybe the microwave so we can have power as long as possible. We will also run the freezer for a few hours at a time.

Strider – at 18:45

ShenVal;

Alas, it is too late for the University crop, it has all been sold, though several farmers in the area have quite a bit sitting in their silos and barns. You may want to check with your local Coop Extension and see if they can point you towards someone local that has also grown a crop locally. It is often used as a cover crop prior to soybeans.

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 14:31

Hey everyone— no, i haven’t had a whole lot of luck spreading the word, though i will say most of my family is prepping now— someone else mentioned it on a local yahoo group so i sent in some links and and a few basic how-to’s— you know, start small— don’t get overwhelmed— just try to get ready for 1 week to start with— the floods in sussex and dorchester last month have helped a little in that people can see wow, things can go really crazy in just a short amount of time—

we just finished renovating an office into a walk-in pantry so now our storage options are better—

strider- so sorry to hear that your turn out wasn’t better for your informational session- we are still in the food and water acquistion phase, though hope to be set up with that soon— it is the next part that can get so overwhelming— alternate sources of heat and cooking, etc… i mean, if you have an all electric house, you have an all electric house— we’re looking at maybe getting one of those propane ventless 28,000 btu stoves from home depot— about $300.00 and getting the attachment where you don’t need electric to turn it on— any idea how much getting a new propane tank installed costs and how much it costs to fill it? I saw where someone did that and then wired a propane link to their deck to hook their grill up to so they had a rather large source of heat and cooking?

hope all the rest of the maryland preppers are doing well! keep it up!

Strider – at 19:11

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 14:31

I use a 28,000 btu heater on propane and heat my entire house with it (some rooms and floorlevels more than others), and found that I halved my fuel bill.

Though house came with a 500 gallon (6′ long watermellon shaped tank, like the chicken houses use) I found that the propane company would install a second 150? gallon tank at my shop for free. I used a cheap NOT for in house propane heater in the shop during the winter of ‘01, and have not used it since. The propane company checks it to make sure it is still full each winter. It’s a great backup to the main tank, between both we can make it through an entire winter’s heating season.

Chesapeake – at 19:03

Strider, I hope for your sake it has ac because it is going to be brutal around here for awhile. Would think gas cost almost as much as the ferry.

Strider – at 19:14

Chesapeake, I don’t think it is the cost of gas that the U worries about, it’s that “the powers that be” don’t like people having a “fun trip” while they are stuck in their (air conditioned) office. But, on the bright side, the trip will probably take a total of 12 hours, so I get 4 hrs comp time. There is always a bright side, sometimes I just need to root a little for it.

Dear Employees:

As influenza season approaches, we are reminded again that a relatively common winter illness still threatens to become a worldwide pandemic with potentially significant loss of life and social disruption. But there are things we can do to be prepared and minimize the health, social, and economic consequences of an influenza pandemic in Howard County. You can play a vital role in this effort.

The Health Department is offering a new, large-scale, drive through influenza vaccination clinic on Sunday, October 15, 2006 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We are doing this to test new and innovative ways to provide vaccine to large numbers of county residents, a critical response during a pandemic.

During a real influenza pandemic, or other large emergency in the county, all Howard County Government employees may be called upon to help respond. Know what to expect. Build confidence in your ability to respond. Volunteer now to help us protect our future.

Chesapeake - You’re on the ball this morning. I haven’t even walked up the lane to get the Salisbury paper, and here is news on my desktop from the paper. Good job.

I was at the meeting mentioned. Unfortionatly there were more presenters than attendees (6 vs 5). But I am glad to report that our local primary hospital has its act pretty well together. They’ve been laying in N95′s and PPE, and have agreements with local motels for insta-wards. They’re discussing bringing back retired HCW, but are waiting for TPTB to get the paperwork done for legal protection. The Infectious disease head is especially aware and up-to-date. All of this makes me feel good, since my DW works there.

Unfortionatly I can’t say the same of the county. They are following in lock step with the rest of the county health dept’s in MD (2% case fatality rate, don’t worry about the supply chain breakdowns, we have it all under control, trust us, we’re from the government..) I asked how they reconcile their 2% figures with the hospital statement of current 70% CFR. They spitted and sputtered, but came up with no good answer. Before I could ask more questions my DW started kicking me and shushing me. After the event, I asked the head of the health dept privately how many weeks to stock up food etc for. She says one. As in “one week.” Her assistant also suggested getting canned foods that we don’t like so that we don’t lose our self control and eat our preps ahead of need.

The hospital is in great shape. The county (and the surrounding MD counties that rely on the State plan) is toast.

I called Prince George’s County to see if anything was being planned and, nope, nada, nothing — they had a meeting for businesses and large churches last year, that was all. And not to worry, pandemic flu is just like regular flu, only more people get it.

think of it as evolution in action.

Hey Chesapeake,

I didn’t wind up going to the drive-in event, although now I wish I had. They had enough volunteers so I wasn’t needed and county employees were supposed to get their vaccines two weeks later in-house. However, the employee clinic has been postponed due to supply issues.

Chesapeake – at 06:35 - BTW, how did you hear about the Salisbury meeting held last night? TPTB didn’t publicize it even in the local papers or a PSA announcement. And I wondered why no one showed up.

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 19:23

Ditto! When I saw that in the paper this morning and saw it was a public meeting i wondered where it had been publicized. I would have loved to attend. Any chance there will be another one?

Strider, I picked that news up on NewsNow-http://tinyurl.com/vj6ea

“TPTB didn’t publicize it even in the local papers or a PSA announcement. And I wondered why no one showed up.”

Up in MA, our ptb do just that and then say, “Doesn’t seem to be any public interest in the topic” (roll your eyes here)

hey delmarvans— just got an invite to a meeting being held by the wicomico county dept of health on pandemic preparedness for special needs peoples including limited english proficiency people (why i got the invite) also for those with disabilities and some other groups— the meeting is being held on dec. 7th from 10–12 at the library— it says it is by invite only— anyone else interested in attending? i can try to get an invite extended.

any special questions i should bring up? i am assuming sensenbrenner will be there.
Strider – at 20:50

ESP @ 20.02 I’d LOVE to chat with them again. Perhaps I qualify due to disabilaty from Lymes, and wife qualifies with 50 yrs of Typ 1 diabetes. Special questions (which they weren’t able to answer last time) is how will food be brought into county, main line electric trunks and petrol-fuel reliability and repairablity, have they advanced to a higher state of prep (even on paper) than he MD State plan? Are they planning on tapping Perdue’s feedstock for emergency human food consumption (doubt that the chickens will be high demand at that time). Were are they planning on the lines for county quarantine.

How/who do I need to contact to get a ticket?

eastern shore prepper – at 21:14

hey strider- the flyer is on my desk at work- i’ll look tomorrow and get you the contact— i don’t know when the flyer came or from where— today was my first day back to work after 8 weeks of maternity leave but i rsvp’d immediately. i’ll see what info i can get— do you have any notes from the last meeting that you attended?

Strider – at 21:37

ESP: Only note that I took was that PRMC hospital is way along on their preps and plans, county was lost and befuddled, using the 2% state plan n lock-step.

Congratulations on the new one! I look forward to meeting you.

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 09:15

I’ve e-mailed the contact this morning to see how to get an invitation extended to other interested parties.

The flyer says that the meeting goal is to empower organizations respinsible for special needs groups; to plan for Pandemic Influenza and all-hazards emergencies. and it is at the civic center, not the library. I’ll let you know what i hear from the e-mail.

Eastern Shore Prepper – at 09:50

hey there- got a response— if i can send the organization and contact name, then they will try to extend an invitation— the special needs groups listed include persons with mental or physical disabilities, elderly, poor, and limited english proficiency.. do you work or volunteer with any organizations or groups that deal with any of those special needs groups?

Strider – at 10:01

ESP: Well.. Some of my students (college) seem to have mental and physical disabilities, especially before 10AM on Mondays and Fridays, but I don’t think that they qualify. The way some of them write shows limited English proficiency, especially in their writing. That probably won’t work either. And I’m poor, but that isn’t what they are looking for. I guess I am out of luck. Let me know how the meeting went as I am one county down from there. Thanks for checking.

ESP – at 12:40

I sent about 6 people’s names, numbers and e-mails to the contact person after speaking with them to see if she will extend the invitations to them. It is SO INTERESTING to me that it says ‘Participation is by invitation only’. I guess that means it is NOT a public meeting. I asked her who would be presenting and if it was a follow-up to the meeting held a few weeks ago with Dr. Khawand from PRMC. I’ll let you know the remarks.

I’ll keep you updated with any info I get.
