If someone has posted this somewhere, I didn’t see it, so the best way for this to be found by the most people, is to make it a thread. I think this free online book will be great to read and it is printable. Thank you Dr. Greger!
“As such, this endeavor is not for profit. All of the proceeds I receive from all my books and speaking engagements are donated to charity and the entire manuscript is available here for free online. —Michael Greger, M.D.
“A brilliant and captivating book, meticulously researched, beautifully and engagingly written with wit and grace, and argued with relentless logic. In addition to providing practical take-home tips for protecting oneself from the flu, the author elegantly demonstrates that the evolution of the devastating influenza virus, as well as that of numerous other zoonotic pathogens, stems directly from the proliferation of confinement agricultural systems. Every person concerned about human and animal health and welfare, self-preservation, and justice should read this book.” —Bernard Rollin, PhD, University Distinguished Professor, Colorado State University
Thanks NJ Preppie!
Chapter IV B
‘’….Speaking as associate director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense for the Department of Homeland Security to a conference of agricultural bankers, Osterholm laid it out: “This is going to be the most catastrophic thing in my lifetime. When this situation unfolds, we will shut down global markets overnight. There will not be movement of goods; there will not be movement of people. This will last for at least a year, maybe two.” These could well be years characterized by “utter chaos,” he said; “panic would reign.”….”“
Something tells me to make sure I go to church this weekend.
Another qoute to bump up.
Did you know that after 1918 — “As if the pandemic weren’t tragic enough, in the decade that followed, a million people came down with a serious Parkinson’s-like disease termed “encephalitis lethargica,” the subject of the book and movie Awakenings.81 Some researchers now consider this epidemic of neurological disease to be “almost certainly” a direct consequence of viral damage to the brains of survivors. The latest research goes a step further to suggest the pandemic had ripples throughout the century, showing that those in utero at the height of the pandemic in the most affected areas seemed to have stunted lifespans and lifelong physical disability.”
A quote about Fluwiki in chapter I-3-e:
“George Mason University’s Mercatus Center has concluded that we must “realize that the federal government will be largely powerless in the worst stages of a pandemic and make appropriate local plans.”2467 Each individual community is responsible for preparing its own pandemic plan; preparation begins with each family, each circle of friends, each neighborhood, each business, each township. To this end, a fledgling “experiment in collaborative problem solving in public health” was launched called The Flu Wiki, available free for anyone to use at www.fluwikie.com, whose explicit purpose is to help local communities prepare for and cope with a pandemic outbreak. It is based on the “wikipedia” model of nonprofit, internet-based collaboration to share knowledge and ideas from around the world. Its success depends on the level and quality of public participation.”
Check out his speaking schedule - he will be in NYC tomorrow night, and has lots of other upcoming engagemets across the country soon. Looks worthwhile.
This is excellent! Thanks for finding it!

This is one of the best resources I have seen so far. Even though I already knew most of the information, I couldn’t stop reading. I have been emailing this to all the people I have been unable to convince so far, which by the way, is a LOT of people.
I may show tonight in NYC
OK - i went to hear Dr. Michael Greger speak tonight.
It was held at a comedy club! Go figure.
About 30 people in attendance. Michael ran through his talk while showing a PPT presentation with slides and video - very well done.
He started with the emergence of Infectious disease… from domesticated animals, wild animals for food… through the current situation of poultry farming. Seems that we humans didn’t have infectious disease for a long time in our history until we domesticated animals… then a whole host of diseases popped up.
He then gracefully moved into H5N1, science, history etc… covered all the bases… nice job.
But he kept the WHO confirmed H2H out of it preferring to not be alarmist… came back to bite him on the butt during Q&A…
He is also not as up to date as we are… since his internet abilities on the road are limited.
Overall, a very good presentation… a bit long but a necessary intro into Panflu.
One question from a health professional was adversarial - it is just a bird disease. No humans yet… health care is terrible - we should focus on that… doesnt Rumsfeld own tami stock?
I noticed another persons head shaking in unison with mine… and passed him a note that read… “Goju”.
His eyes lit up. He is a poster here and at FT. We had a good talk…
My one suggestion to the fine Doc… was that he not end the talk with the light hearted “Daily Show” segment covering BF. If you didn’t see it, it was Jon Stewart at his best poking fun at a serious subject. I told Michael to drop that… leave them shaking in their boots as they left. He said he thought it would make it more dealable… not including it would paralyze people into non action. I humbly disagreed and dropped $30 for his autographed 465 page book… “The Bird Flu - A Virus Of Our Own Hatching” on sale next week.
Such an honor to be threaded on the wiki! I do hope I will get to meet more of you on my travels. All my talks are free and open to the public; my dates are listed here. And though my internet access on the road is a bit patchy, I do hope to contribute (and learn from you!) as much as I can—please let me know if anyone has any suggestions for improving the content on birdflubook.org. I hope it to be a living document and would love everyone’s input. Thank you for all you’re doing for all your communities. -Michael

Thanks and WELCOME Dr. Greger! You really are putting yourself out there! I look forward to reading your books; online and in print.
Thanks, N.J. Preppie for posting info on this book. And thank you, Dr. Greger, for this invaluable donation! I started reading it online and my husband finally had to drag me away from the computer several hours later. That is the stuff nightmares are made of! I emailed the link to many friends and family. It’s such great information, but totally frightening! As I see it, our job now is to help our neighbors and friends use this infomation to motivate them into action, rather than be overwhelmed into a sense of helplessness. We need to give them simple steps to take to help prepare themselves and their families.
UTmom - I wonder if sending them a shovel will get the point across. :)
Dr Greger your book is facinating. Ive learned more about viruses from you than what I did in nursing school. You have presented a clear logicial picture of how viruses have become pathogenic in humans. Look forward to hearing you speak in MI this March. BTW Im never eating coomercially produced chicken again. I prefer my food not be bathed in feces YUK
I’ve only read the first few chapters so far.
Fantastic book.
A must read.
Thank you Dr. Greger
One of my adult daughters is reading this book and the “light is coming on” for her as to just how serious this situation is. I’ve never been a great science student, but these chapters are written so well that, even I, can grasp much of it. It’s very compelling. Thanks, again, Dr. Greger!
Now that we are past the elections, your local officials may have the time or would like to look busy at the computer. E-mail this book link, google up your county and town health department, your Mayor and Freeholders; send to newspaper journalists, school district boards, etc.
