Let us know the local news re: bird migrations, etc…

I’m in California for duration…HI is “home” (Big Island). I keep an eye out (the rain & floods made that case). There’s a migrating bird (is it Kolea?) that arrives in August from Alaska every year…Comments in Advertiser. That’s the one I’d watch! 1918 Flu books seem to tell of a relative easy-go that year (compared to much of Polynesia). Two waves…first only hit O`ahu the Summer of 1918…worse one in Fall spread to Neighbor Islands. Where are you?

Hi Onipa’a — I’m actually in Canada, but I want to get people in other regions on board to meet you guys and to see what’s happening in other parts…

I’ve never been to Hawaii… it’s good to know the name of that bird. WHen do you go back to Hawaii? Is anyone prepping there?

Hi Ricewiki…

I was dealing with college finals for a few days. I read at the “Advertiser” web page after our exchange, that Gov. Lingle just signed an agreement with Feds to “cooperate” in event of pandemic. While it hasn’t seemed that HI has “rated” as very well prepared… maybe it’s finally changing. The floods really have distracted from business as usual (at least on O`ahu and Kaua`i). We were visiting a month last summer, but can’t get back this year, so far. We’ll see (hope many islanders around the Pacific are prepping, since they expereinced some of the worst death rates in 1918 (un- less they received total quarantine, like U.S.-Samoa). The seminal text on 1918 by Dr. Crosby, speaks about AK and the Islands for an entire chapter. It was like Black Death…but so much had already happened from foreign diseases earlier in 1800′s, i imagine people just endured. Steadfast. :)

well, bring the other islanders aboard the fluwiki, Onipaa!:) you’d think you guys would be better able to quarantine yourselves on the island…. what kind of access to preps do you have there?

To Ricewiki…From Onipa`a. Hawai`i will need ALL of its ALOHA Spirit to weather this! Economy dependant on Tourism will make it very hard on Hawai`i, no matter how lethal. I know there’s Costcos on three or four islands, many people on Big Island live off rainwater catchment, and many have had diesel generators for years (some solar, some geo- thermal). Their big challenge, i think, is food & gas (there was even a recent Propane shortage Hilo-side). 80%+ of consumer goods come by freighter. They have a lot of AG. (Big Island especially), but not of basic staples like rice production (little taro). The Pacific Islands that had it easy in 1918, according to Crosby, included American Samoa, where there was COMPLETE quarantine (even mail from W. Samoa) for up to 3 YEARS! Australia did well on “its” islands, N.Z. did poorly, U.S. pretty well in some cases… The key was quarantine, and public support for it, long enough to skip the lethal strain.
