Forum: Long Island NY Preppers

24 March 2006

Backpacker – at 07:57

I’ve seen a few other people, like Indyra, say they’re from Long Island—how many of us are on this forum?

Have you seen people in stores who look like they’re prepping? Is your town doing anything to prepare?

I’m in Nassau, on the north shore. So far I haven’t heard anything from my town about it but a local legislator is having a general forum on “preparing for disasters” sometime soon; I suspect it’s related to the bird flu.

My town’s in a flood zone so we’re usually prepped anyway; every year they remind people to have all their supplies on hand in case of flooding/hurricanes, but it seems like a lot of people blow it off!

What’s your situation?

:)

lauraB – at 08:02

I’m just across the sound in SW CT. I posted a few days ago on this. When I have made trips to Costco and Target to ramp up my prepping there was no one I could identify as a fellow prepper. No low supplies on anything. Everyone just buying everyday things. The cashier made a comment about me having “a really big pantry.” We live in a tiny rural town and I doubt the town is doing anything - they are clueless on virtaully everything.

mmmelody47 – at 08:50

Hey - - Hicksville checking in! Nice to see other Lonk Islanders!! ;-)

Backpacker – at 08:53

All right!!! So I’m not the only one!!! :)

mmmelody47 – at 08:54

Backpacker – at 07:57 - North Shore - flood zone? - sounds like that little village just North of Oyster Bay. Worked up in that area for almost 20 years.

Backpacker – at 08:56

Yep, that’s me! That little floodprone village. You know where it is! :)

momathomejill – at 08:58

close this thread its a waste of time

mmmelody47 – at 08:58

Sure…used to drive a white car with orange and blue stripe - catch my drift? Worked primarily in LV and frequently in the “ville.”

mmmelody47 – at 09:02

momathomejill – at 08:58 - establishing geographical similarities can assist those that may be just starting to prep…places to shop and things to worry about. California Preppers had much of the same banter.

Backpacker – at 09:08

Oh yeah, I know those cars.

What’s up with momathomejill? If you think a thread is a waste of time, don’t waste your time reading it. It’s that simple.

mmmelody47 – at 09:09

Backpacker – at 08:56 the fluwikie, as you can see is a terrific resource for friendly help with ideas, scientic discussion, where to buy and what to buy locally and on the web. Personally I’ve found the BJ’s in Westbury to be an awesome place to get just about everything you need to survive.

Backpacker – at 09:10

Yes! And Target, too. Also the “loss leader” sales at Shop & Stop.

I love how you time your messages—a legacy of driving that little car? :)

mmmelody47 – at 09:21

What plans do you have for water storage?

Watcher – at 10:10

I don’t really have any, am still up in the air about it. I’m too cheap to spend $$$ on a 55-gallon barrel that’s food-safe. I do have a water filter for drinking water that I’ve used on several-months-long backpacking trips, but you need a source of fresh water to filter from. I’d have to rely on rain because the nearest pond is 3 miles away (and filled with waterfowl). As you know, we have more than enough salt water around here. Maybe I could use that for washing dishes, and save fresh for drinking/washing.

What are you going to do? Any ideas?

mmmelody47 – at 10:40

Went to the local hardware store and bought three - 33 gal. plastic garbage cans….also food grade 45 gal. garbage can liners on the web (google “food grade trash can liners”). Also read on the wikie a great (cheap) idea for storing water for bathing, dishes and other non-drinking situations - buy a plastic kiddie pool. Depending on size you can cover it with a tarp and have a couple a hundred gallons ready to go!

Backpacker – at 16:01

Hey, those food grade garbage can liners sound great—where did you get them and how did you know they were food grade—does it say that on the label?

The kiddie pool is a good idea, I can catch rainwater in a tarp and funnel it into the pool for filtering. We already have the pool—excellent idea, thanks!

I also wanted to thank you for the work you did when you drove that certain car. I have had occasion to ask the drivers of those cars for help sometimes—thanks to all of you for doing that tough job.

Backpacker – at 16:02

mmmelody47 – at 16:48

Backpacker – at 16:01 Please go to this link - http://tinyurl.com/jr7rk - the key here is that these bags are USDA and FDA approved for food storage.

“I also wanted to thank you for the work you did when you drove that certain car. I have had occasion to ask the drivers of those cars for help sometimes—thanks to all of you for doing that tough job.” Thank you very much…I truly enjoyed doing my job….particularly when so many appreciated one’s efforts. Be well and be safe.

One further point - recently on the news a visiting weather-caster warned of the potential for dangerous hurricanes running up the East coast….possibly causing Katrina like devastation. So Backpacker, consider the experience and knowledge you gain from the terrific people contributing to this site to be useful for other than a pandemic. Lets hope that neither occurs.

Indyra – at 20:01

Well it seems that Nassau County /Town of Oyster Bay,is well represented, relative to the number of total posters so far. Nice not to be alone anymore. Hey again Backpacker !

mmmelody47 −0850 Looks like we are neighbors also in 11801.

As far as other people prepping,I have seen nothing that makes it look that way to me.I am also planning on the tarp and kiddie pool method,I have a water filter as well, and plan on filling every available container whenever the water is flowing.

Watcher- at1010 I ordered a couple of kits for water storage 5,5 gal mylar bags,in boxes with spouts like the “boxes o’ wine” you see at picnics etc…from Emergency Essentials they take up no real space until it’s time to fill them, and are easy on the wallet. Each kit is under $30.00,they were under $25.00 but looks like the price is going up.

       Peace,all
mmmelody47 – at 20:54

Indyra – at 20:01 - I have to tell you that I’m so pleased that the TOB is obviously well represented as you correctly point out. Our town is truly a great place to live. Isn’t it? In recent years, as you probably know, diversity has changed the face the area. I’m a little concerned about some, since my brand new neighbor is a Sikh (hope I spelled it correctly) family…absolutely the nicest people you’d ever want to meet, but totally oblivious to the pandemic possibilities! I still working on it though.

How do you find your neighborhood for prepping? Aware…unaware? Where are you shopping for deals?

Backpacker – at 09:26

Hi again, Indyra, that’s a great water-storage idea.

mmmelody, you’re right about the hurricane thing—I’ve always prepped for that, so this is just a little more of the same thing, and I can always use the BF preps if we get flooded again (unless we have to evacuate).

Despite the floods/hurricanes, people seem oblivious about the flu and many of them aren’t even ready for floods. And we KNOW our town floods. Go figure.

Your area has lots of people from India/Pakistan—I love those Indian grocery stores around there. They have great stuff for prepping—I’ve never seen so many different kinds (or colors) of lentils, beans, etc. Plus the spices, premade foods, etc. Yum. We’re lucky to live in an area with such diversity of cultures and foods.

Keep working on those Sikh folks!

have you considered water bladders? go to… gotwater2.com

 Mr Silkman- at 19:47

I have been on the fence about the option of using an AQUATANK water storage bladder simply because of the size and weight issue.I just can’t figure out a way to make this work that would be reasonable to implement.A filled 110 gallon Aquatank would weigh over 900 lbs and despite the option to place it under the bed seems somewhat problematic.Squeezing it to get water to flow to the “spigot” sounds like a receipe for water damage.

I considered building some sort of cart or table to utilize one outside but then you run into freeze problems and still may have to deal with a mobility issue. Any solutions would be helpful.

mmmelody47 – at 10:15

Mr. Silkman – at 19:47 and Indyra – at 09:22 - with all of my earlier talk about food grade trash can liners and trash cans hoping to provide me with the necessary amounts of water required during an emergency, it struck me when I went to the site mentioned by Mr. Silkman just above, that my plan may be inadequate. I decided to buy the 250 gallon bladder. I realize that my children (five) who are mostly out on their own and would likely come here during a national emergency. Indyra - size and weight obviously does matter with these water bladders. I’ve decided that I will fill mine while it is on the ground in my backyard lying on a tarp to give it some protection…I won’t fill it until the time comes when pandemic seems to be on the way. In the meantime I will continue with my original plan to fill the trash cans.

Who else is in from the northcountry?

Just found this site. We’re in the capitol area…15 miles north of Albany, NY. I work in a local hospital and have a running gag going with one of our Infectious Disease MDs. Asked him what he thinks of this whole bird flu thing…..he says it’s only a matter of time!!!!! AAAAHHHHH! So…if any of us can get the usual “fu” vaccine, we should. Since I work closely with patients I guess I’ll go along with immunization. Been working for over 20 years at the same hospital and NEVER bothered with the flu shot till now.

Cortland area

I found this a bit concerning…

“…However, about one in four (24%) say they would not have someone to take care of them. More than four in ten people living in one-adult households (45%)…”

I made up flu kits for the bedrooms.

They contain adult diapers, Desitin, plastic bags, gloves, masks, goggles, plastic apron w/arms, wipes, tea in bottles, baby food/spoons, extra large chux for under sick person, digital thermom / covers , liquid tylenol and ibuprophen, vomit pan, honey licorice drops for dry mouth, warm bed socks, hot water bottle w/fuzzy cover… homeopathic flu remedies.
