mominohio – at 10:58

Nice to see someone somewhat close!! No one I know is prepping. I have always had a “store” so to speak in my garage mostly the paper type products and canned goods. Everyone I have mentioned this to thinks I am nuts so I quietly keep plugging along. My hubby is going along but not to sure he thinks I am in my right mind either I just keep saying WHAT IF it happens wouldnt you want to make sure the kids have stuff? and he just keeps helping! I have taken inventory of what we need and I just cant believe what is needed for just 3 months. I thought I had alot till I had to write it all down!!!

JoeWat 10:59

I live between Youngstown and Pittsburgh (near Negley, Ohio pop approx 200).

You are not alone.

JoeWat 11:01

There is a thread titled “Letter to my family” check it out and give a copy to your husband. If my being a Professor at YSU helps so be it. This is one dangerous bug.

Noah – at 11:14

Between Dayton and Cincinnati, prepping for family and currently 37 rescued animals. Currently evaluating additional needs for 1 year supply of animal feed. Currently self sustaining in case of loss of power. (country living)

Don’t forget the animals.

I to am between dayton and cincinnati! i am trying to prep for 8 that inclused my daughter and her husband and their 1 yr old. I am a SAHM and with one small income from DH it has been hard going but every week i buy a little and am making my daughter a list that if we get notice to stay home that she should be packing up and bringing all the stuff on the list. My son and her husband are in school to be police officers so if they are done by the time this hits they most likely would be out somewhere! so we figured better to have her and the baby here! thanks for letting me know i am not alone!!

Howdy Neighbors!

Although thecnically not from Ohio, I am 15 miles north of the border, above toledo. I get Toledo news, and see something about the bird flu nightly now. All my Ohio friends that know I’m a prepper just think I’m a nut.

yes there are several of us in N.E. Ohio (Geauga County)

John-Ohio – at 14:28

I live near Sandusky (Cedar Point). I prepared a handout for about 65 of our friends and relatives. It included three preparedness printouts from this site, plus a three page letter from me summarizing the risks of this, the possibilities it could occur, and some suggestions on what to do. My wife also prepared a one page letter that urged people to take this seriously. We pointed out that preparing for disasters and emergencies is just like buying insurance—you hope you never need it but are damn glad when and if you do. It may have helped convince people that we were speaking from experience as our house was destroyed by a November tornado in ‘02 (after 28 years of paying insurance premiums and no claims during that time). We have received NO negative comments and many have said thank you and that it opened their eyes to the need to get ready and they were taking our warnings seriously. We are done with our preparing, except for getting my moped serviced and buying some last minute canned goods if H2H occurs anywhere in the world.

So john, let me ask you…..

Have you given any thought to what is going to happen to your nuke plant when TSHTF? I live 20 miles from ours. I was a nuclear weapons handler in the navy, and was certified in nuclear weapon fire fighting. What we called a “Low order detonation”.

K Mary – at 15:15

Been lurking on this site for awhile. Never posted before, but was so excited to see people so close to me! I’m a mom of four living in cincinnati. I’ve felt I was the only one prepping around here. Family does not want to hear about BF and my friends and husband just tolerate the topic. I guess I don’t feel quite as alone .

mominohio – at 16:03

glad to find some of us feel the same way! but glad we are getting together here!! we kow we are not crazy and we are doing what we NEED!to do!!!!

Noah – at 16:14

In today’s society it is only prudent to be well stocked for ANY contingency let alone just BF. Supply chains can be disrupted by many means. Floods, earthquakes, snow, storms, electrical grid disruptions, oil supply problems, etc. Consider the BF to be a great justification to be better prepared. Remember the cold war mentality. One justified preparation remedies many potential catastophies.

K Mary – at 16:49

A question for my ohio preppers. I’m looking for powdered eggs that I can pick up around the cincy/dayton/nky area? I hate to order online again. I’m not sure I want to pay for shipping again:) Hey if anyone has any great advice for other shopping places for preps, let me know.

NE_Ohio – at 17:10

I have been reading the posts for weeks. Glad to finally see some others from Ohio. I have been concentrating on our local and community government to address the prepardeness issue. I have engaged the Lt. Governor of Ohio on this issue and he is interested in speaking about it.

Anyone else from Northeast Ohio?

start-stop – at 17:41

I, too have been lurking on the edges. Nice to see others in my area (close to Toledo). I just read in a news now , article that we are only one change away from mutating to humans here is the http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/3/prweb364146.htm Anyone confirm this or see it elsewhere? Start to prep , then think what for?then start , then stop…

NE_Ohio – at 17:10 I have been concentrating on our local and community government to address the prepardeness issue. I have engaged the Lt. Governor of Ohio on this issue and he is interested in speaking about it.

What response have you had from contacting local and com. gov.?

NE_Ohio – at 19:50

I have been sent the plan for our area (which is actually a copy of a plan for the state of Washington). I have found some of the local government to be interested in discussing and preparing plans. I will be meeting with them this week to discuss further.

I have also invited them to attend a vaccine conference at Case Western on April 10th and 11th to learn more about the issues. April 10th is supposed to be more of an overview on birdflu and the nations vaccine capacity. They have accepted our offer and will be attending.

I’ll be interested to see what the level of commitment for prepardeness will be from them.

Mr White42 – at 19:55

So are you talking about Ken Blackwell? Possible sucessor to Bob Taft?

NE_Ohio – at 20:00

Mr White -

No, these are the elected officials from our local government in Northeast Ohio. I have also heard a rumor that the Akron City Police force is gearing up for potential preps. It is at least encouraging that some organizations are starting to take notice of all the birdflu news lately.

Mr White42 – at 20:05

This is most encouraging indeed. I will check out the possible gearing up of the A.P.D. and get back to you. Can you also tell more about the Case Western event?

John-Ohio – at 20:07

Retired para: Actually, I live exactly 13 miles from D-B NPS. I know many of the people who work there and I have participated for 25 years in the bi-annual emergency drills that are required for counties that have a nuclear power plant in them. I have served as the EOC coordinator in the early years and manned the ARC desk there in recent years. I feel that we are pretty well prepared for possible eventualities. I think the plant operators could shut it down effectively if necessary. IMHO I don’t consider this my most worrisome threat. In my preparedness efforts though, I do have a full face professional type respirator, tyvec suits, a dosimeter, some potasium idodide tablets, a very tight house, a deep well, etc. Plus, I will likely be dead before the 20 years it takes thyroid cancer to show up and I am well passed the age to father children. I AM more concerned though that our one 100 bed hospital has NO surge capacity for a pandemic. Or, that a “perfect storm” of disasters could hit this year or next—a hurricane wipes out a major city (Houston, NYC, Miami) and oil refineries and Gulf drilling platforms, a terrorist act destroys a US city and/or Saudi oil processing facilities, the flu goes pandemic, and the US and world economy crashes. So, while the odds may be low of these events happening, I feel I must buy insurance and be prepared to look after myself and my family.

NE_Ohio – at 20:19

Mr White - you can read about and register for the conference by going to www.vaccine2006.org. The website gives an overview of the conference. Speakers from WHO, HHS and many Pharma companies, etc. will be there specifically speaking about the Pandemic and vaccine production. The conference is free and will be held at Severance Hall so they must be expecting a large turnout.

I will be out of town and cannot attend but many people from our office will be there along with the elected officials we have invited. If you do attend I would be interested to see a posting from you about the event (I’d like to hear the perspective of a fluwikian!)

Eastside Cincinnati here. Also looking for good plastic barrels. Glad to see Ohioans here! Lets keep an eye out for sales on canned goods;)

In the Dayton/Cinci area - anyone been to Jungle Jim’s for preps? Thought he might have some interesting things and didn’t know if I wanted to make the drive over - about 3 hours from here. Thought he might have dried eggs or dehydrated fruits or veggies. Just wondering? A neat place to shop any day, but just now remembered that he had strange stuff, so maybe.

gracie – at 22:50

Responding from central Oh. Where the mod of transportation by neighbors is horse and buggy. Lehman’s Hardware is very helpful for non electrical supplies.

Dan Boone – at 18:04

Hello, been lurking in Cincinnati for about a year. Jungle Jim’s had 50 pound bags of white rice for $12.99 in April 2006. In September 2006 this same bag of white rice was $18.99 I actually prefer brown rice; however it may not be the best option if the power goes out and alternative fuel is needed to cook it. It takes a lot longer to cook brown rice. Although I have 2 pressure cookers. One for rice and another for cooking beans and/or lentils. My preps are minimal parboiled rice, beans, lentils, powdered milk, amaranth, oat bran, ramen noodles, sugar, instant coffee, tea bags, powdered eggs, water, bleach, soap, toilet paper, cast iron wood stove, wood,etc.. Have not been able to get one relative to prepare.

Kroger has egg whites that equal 57 eggs for 8.99. That is all I have been able to find locally. I am in the Dayton/Cincy area too. I haven’t been to Jungle Jim’s in a while. I hit the dollar days at Kroger and the Keystone canned meats at Walmart. I was out prep shopping yesterday and ran into a gentleman who said this Keystone’s(canned in Lima) is wonderful. He had about 2 dozen cans in his cart. So even though I haven’t tried it from the looks of his cart it may be true. I am curious about JJ’s now, I am only about 1 hour away from them, I may plan a trip down in the next week or so. It is a fun place to go. I am glad to see Ohio preppers here too BTW.

Dan Boone – at 20:45

A lot of people have asked about food grade plastics for food storage. A company called United States Plastic Corp. out of Lima Ohio (419 area code)has plastic food storage containers and water storage tanks. They also carry the 5 gal. and 6 gal.buckets. They can be found at www.usplastic.com Another thing that I wanted to mention about Jungle Jim’s is excellent prices on spices (Indian section) and tea (Chinese section). They have a great selection of all types of rice from various countries. Have not seen bulk (ie 25 pound) bags of beans or lentils. I have found WalMart the cheapest source for more common beans and lentils.

Walmart also carries Keystone Brand Canned Meat out of Lima. 4.98 a can expensive, but I tried one of the beef this weekend. Excellent well worth the price. I am trying a can of the chicken this next weekend, each can is 28 oz. Makes a huge pot of beef and noodles. Very easy to fix on a camp stove. If no one has tried it I recommend some if you can. You can checkout the website at keystonebrandmeat.com.
