I’m not far away in NH. Scan fluwiki everyday, and making preps. Wish there were more NH and VT folks to network with, but would rather be here than in New Jersey!

Dinkers- I agree with you! At least here in VT because I live in a pretty isolated area, we may stand a chance as far as being able to get into quarantine before SHTF! LOL!

Last Friday on a VT radio station I heard them say TWICE that the utility companies are saying to be prepared to be “ON YOUR OWN” in the event of a pandemic. They also said to be prepared for an influx of urban refugees in the event of a pandemic. Seems our local radio/media are getting the word out- even if it is subtle. I also received a return call yesterday from a woman at the VT Dept of Health and she gave me dates and places for regional summits throughout VT. I will be attending the one in Montpelier on June 13th.

I have my first tote of food gathered and I have a couple bags of tealights…hoping to get more done this week and weekend.

Sorry= the post above was done by HeatherinVT! Not completely use to this format…the other forums I belong to I have to log in and it automatically posts my name.

Thought you guys might like to know…article link ‘Pandemic Summit Scheduled For Police, Fire, EMS, Health Officials’

…”ST. JOHNSBURY VERMONT For more than a year, there have been numerous news stories about a possible avian, or bird, flu pandemic striking not only the U.S., but the entire world with millions of people dying and the world’s economy being struck a devastating blow.

In an effort for Northeast Kingdom-area firefighters, EMS, police and health care professionals to be prepared for a possible pandemic, a series of summits have been set up around the state, including one at Lyndon Institute at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 31. ..”

…”A series of eight regional summits on pandemic influenza planning for community leaders and first responders is being held around the state through June. Vermont’s large-scale pandemic flu exercise will be conducted July 17–28.

The federal government has a set of planning checklists available at pandemicflu.gov, the official Web site for pandemic flu, and at healthvermont.gov, the Vermont Department of Health Web site.

There are steps individuals, families and communities can take to prepare for a pandemic. People can keep a supply of food and medicines on hand in case they have to stay home. They can also practice good public health measures such as covering their mouths when they cough, washing their hands often and well, staying home when sick and teaching children to do the same.

Anyone interested in attending the NEK summit should contact Wood at 748–2576 or e-mail him at calexdirector@charter.net”

Heather In VT:

From across the lake in the Adirondacks. If you have a direct contact with your DOH person, would you consider engaging them ina conversation about the thinking in this string: Unit of Action

I just sent off a letter to the NYS DOH contacts I have, and would be glad to share a copy with you if you’d like.

Dinkers – at 22:07

Heather et al, I would be interested in learning more about the June 13 program in MontP. That is close enough that I can get there easily, and VT always seems to be several steps ahead of the Granite State in matters of public policy. I am interested in how state agencies plan to deploy, but more keen on how communities might organize to help one another. Meanwhile, keep an eye on Indonesia and Romania, and keep stocking up; I feel in my bones that it is coming!

HeatherinVTat 12:06

MaMa- Thank you. My fiance is a volunteer fire fighter but not much (if anything) has been mentioned at their monthly meetings.

AdirondackMan- I would be interested. I am going to try and get her e-mail address (I have her phone # on my cell from when she called me back earlier this week). Please forward a copy of the letter you sent to NYS DOH….if you don’t mind posting your e-mail to me in this thread I will respond.

Dinkers- the meeting is at Montpelier High School on June 13th. I believe it starts at 6 pm. When I confirm the time I will post in this thread.

Adirondack Mountain Man – at 13:42

Heather, Write me at beckert@newandimproved.com, I’ll forward the letter I sent to DOH

MaMaat 13:44

HeatherinVT, you’re welcome! BTW my hubby is a volunteer fire fighter too, nothing here either for planning- we’re working on it!

HeatherinVTat 13:55

MaMa- If you end up coming to the meeting in Vermont let me know…we’ll get a chance to meet and talk. Heather

HeatherinVTat 13:59

Last night I printed alot of info of to give to my mother and stepfather and my sister and her boyfriend. Lists for what to have to be prepared and such and a little background of the flu and what could happen if there is a pandemic. I know my family and they will look at it like Y2K w/ Feathers like alot of people! I am sure they are rolling their eyes at it (although I have convinced my mother to get at least 3 months supply of meds- she needs them to live). But, half jokingly I said…”now you’ve been given what you need to get prepared- don’t come knocking on my door because you didn’t heed this warning and expect me to take care of you. I will have my own family (daughter & fiance) to care for.” They gave me a hard time for saying that but I told them if it’s either feeding my daughter or feeding you…My daughter is going to be fed & cared for first. I have invited my sister and her boyfriend to bring supplies if there is an outbreak and come stay with us….safety in numbers kind of thing.

MaMaat 14:14

HeatherinVT, sorry if I mislead you. I’m actually from Manitoba(Canada). I posted the prep article here because I found it in the news and thought it might something important for you guys to know. I’d love to meet and talk with some fellow flu-wikians, not this time though I’m afraid.

HeatherinVTat 14:23

Oh, sorry about that. I meant to post it to Dinkers! LOL! I’m doing paperwork at the office and while I’m on hold on the phone I will type something on here. Multi-tasking!

MaMaat 14:27

LOL! Life’s like that sometimes:-)

HeatherinVTat 16:37

I have a question…

I’m starting to gather things together (prep stuff) and one thing I keep asking myself is how much do I need of each (granola bars, flour, sugar..ect, ect)? Has anyone come up with a list of what you would need to buy of each thing on the food list to make it through 3 months? Do I go out and buy 15 boxes of granola bars and 20 boxes of dried milk? It’s just so much to think about but I have already put together my first “snack” bin- I know snacks are NOT the most important things you need but I had it already in my pantry and instead of using it I put it in one of those big plastic totes.

Adirondack Mountain Man – at 19:13

Heather, somewhere in the personal preparation area of the wiki there is a spread sheet that the Mormons use. Major benefit in quantity leg-work. Look for that and you’ll have iot solved.

Dinkers – at 21:13

Heather — My wife and I will try to make the MontP meeting at the high school, and I’ll wear a Dinkers name tag! I agree with Mtn Man that the Mormon stocking up lists are quite comprehensive; there is a link to it somewhere on the wiki, bc my wife was just looking it over. Seems a bit light on the fats and protein; I’m an omnivore, but can get by on rice and beans for awhile. Small steps will get you there. Take heart.

18 May 2006

HeatherinVTat 09:01

Dinkers - As long as nothing comes up I will be at the meeting (I’ll wear a HeatherinVt name tag as well). It will be nice to meet both you and your wife. I am hoping that my fiance will come with me to the meeting. I think that I overload him at times.

Did anyone watch the show on the RFD channel last night? The news guy said that scientists says that birdflu is unlikely to hit North American soil as European diseases usually stay in Europe and RARELY make it here. WHAT???? So where did the spanish flu come from?? LOL!

19 May 2006

Dinkers – at 15:40

Heather, looks like I will not be there due to a conflicting meeting I must attend back here in the separate reality we all live in. I will look for your posts afterward, thumbs up, thumbs down, etc.. Keep the faith.

HeatherinVTat 17:01

No problem. I was wondering if you know of anyone on this site that recorded the Bird Flu movie? I would like to get a copy somehow!

29 May 2006

Dinkers – at 22:04

Heather, sorry to not reply sooner, but have been glued to the Indonesia threads. We taped the ABC movie, and could loan it to you; don’t have a way to copy it. I was a little underwhelmed by the film, but it does have its powerful moments, and is fairly true to the facts. Let me know if you are still interested, and we can shift to regular email.

HeatherinVTat 22:11

Dinkers- I am definitely interested. You can contact me at heathernhvt@gmail.com

hi,,,,i am in burlington vermont,,,,,and i started buying non parishable goodies last april for the possibility of having to stay home for awile in case of a pandemic. I have about 2–3 months worth of canned meats, veggies, boullion, spices , rice, flour, oil and such . plus i buy a little more each month . most of this stuff should be consumed after about a year and a half anyway or elts it will be not so tastey after that,,,,it would still be edible but enzymes in the food tend to begin nullifying the flavoures over time. I have 4 cords of wood and a wood stove that can be used for heat and cooking if need be. i’ve got some water stashed in empty 2 liter soda bottles. buckets can be used to collect rain water and snow for melting is usualy inescapable around here in winter. I might buy some tvp but they dont sell any of the good stuff around here allthough you can get it online. , i’ve found that soy granules are somewhat similar when soaked and seasoned correctly. allthough more pricey. other than that→ candles, buttwad, soap, salt, and other things we take for granted will be in high demand should this thing happen so i tend to try to realize what those things are and then buy them accordingly. oh and i hunt,,, so whacking a couple squirrles for supper is a distict possibility. ( been there done that ) :) unless of course squirrles get the flu ??? or mad squirrle disease………. hmmmmmmm good luck all.

Nexus – at 11:01

Hey…I’m in Vermont. Montpelier. I haven’t heard too many concerned about it. I have been stocking food and herbs and herbal extracts. Have a coleman stove in case of power outage….water filter. We had a good plan here during the Y2K scare…and I think it would be a good idea to implement that again. Part of me feels the need to prepare and yet another part senses that it isn’t going to happen. Perhaps that is because we put so much energy into the Y2K preparation and it didn’t happen.

I also notice that Vermont is one of the few states that does NOT plan to do any checking for the virus in wild birds.

spiritaxe – at 11:37

I pretty much live the same way all year round anyway, i have tought myself to gather, garden, can, pickle, hunt, fish, camp, make things, cook, and survive if need be for all of my 47 years. i can even make my own beer if need be. allthough i dont do all of the above much anymore → i know how too in a pinch. i am a green mountain boy ! and we are allways prepared,, i use and rotate my stock as i buy more that way everything is fresh and gets used. about 3 months is the back to front duration should supplies stop completely.. more than enough time to plan accordingly. i have a heffty set of winter boots and a set of nice johnson woolen mill hunting clothing that never goes out of style and a stocked backpack for bugging out if nessasary. plus my tools, guns and ammo are never far away. → even in 2006 burlington winter is a long time going someyears and not to be taken lightly. remmember the ice storm of 98′ !!! I do !! i lost power for a week!! but,,,,, . staying in with a nice fire going is a classic vermont comfort that i would’nt be without. cabin fever just dont happen anymore since i got my wood stove. campfire every day and night ! it’s way cool!! i think most native vermonters with any ancestry around here are never far away from the mindset of roughing it for a streach if need be. it’s the cityfied transplants that we’ll have to watch out for if theres trouble. and theres allways some trouble sooner or later. I recomened history and “how to” books with a nice fire going. ;)

I think that as Vermonters- we are probably better off than alot of people who live in the city. Vermont is a haven for “earthy” people…lol! I remember growing up and my family always had a garden (still do) and I can remember the wonderful smells of pickles getting canned- the smell of the spices used to make flabby dills- yum! I can smell it just sitting here and thinking about it. I was raised to be outdoorsy- camping, hunter safety course, being taught what is edible in the woods and fields and what isn’t - puffball mushrooms, dandelion greens, cowslips, fiddleheads…we cut and carried our own firewood out of the woods, we spent all summer gathering berries to freeze or can. My family lived very simply (how I turned out to be such a girly girl is beyond me). I am in my mid 30′s (gasp! How did that happen??), so I think that alot of people in my age group and older will do okay (as long as they have started to prep)…which I have. We’ll be making another trip to Costco soon.

I’m surprised VT is not testing for AI- seeing as how we have a HUGE influx of geese and ducks around this time of year- they stop over in Addison at the reserve…I’ve driven there a few times to see the geese and there are literally THOUSANDS…so I guess if the geese here get it = it will be fairly obvious pretty quickly!

It’s nice to see a few more Vermonters on here! For the longest time I thought I was the only one!

16 September 2006

spiritaxe – at 09:25

well it’s safe to say real vermonters are becoming endangered. so,, i’d check someones papers to be sure. :) most that claim to be “real” vermonters dont know a sap bucket from a bed pan or a tit from a teacup. real vermonters know that when your in a room full of spiders you dont go acting like a fly ;) can you say “new jersey and conneticut” ahhyuh.

HeatherinVTat 15:33

I just got in here to look through this thread again. I grew up in a home where we cut our own firewood (and it was part of my job to drag it out of the woods to the pick up), we tapped our own trees, we spent hours at a night with a flashlight looking for nightcrawlers which was ALOT of fun as a kid! I always laugh at the flat landers…you can usually tell one in the first few seconds of conversation! LOL!

09 October 2006

anonymous – at 10:48

heres a good example,,,,, vermonter- “we tapped our trees last week” flatlander- “why “? “you think they might be hollow”. where’s the starbucks?

21 October 2006

Welcome any new Vermont readers – at 14:32

How are your household and community preparations going?

HeatherinVTat 15:39

Community preps are probably few if any… I am surprised that so many Vermonters just want to stick their heads in the sand…it’s either that our people are just private about it. It’s common knowledge that Vermonters are in general pretty private people. Friendly but Private. LOL! I’m still prepping here and there…If I see something I think I should add to my supplies I pick it up. I need to do ALOT more….
