Okieman - at 07:29, Good Morning. I feel we need to have a running tab probably posted and updated periodically of the cases that have been reported Negative. This is extremely important to me, as they may be returning. It should be in Michelle’s Summary Page but at the bottom seperately from the list. Maybe Michelle can post them negative, and then after a week, remove them and add them to the Negative List.

Okieman – at 08:06

Another thought. Michelle emailed me the excel spreadsheet she is using to post the summary. She has recorded a tremendous amount of information about each of the cases gleened from the articles posted here on the fluwiki forum. She has relationship data (husband, wife, sister…etc), hospitals where each case is being treated, whether tamiflu is being administer, positives, negatives,…et. If Michelle is willing, that info could be uploaded into the ftp site Dude set up for the wiki. Then anyone could go through it and decide for themselves what the data indicates.

As I was writing this I got on the phone and discussed this with Michelle and she said she would be more than willing for the spreadsheet be put on the ftp site. She will email one of the mods in the next few days (times are busy right now) and work out the process. This way the summary on the forum can be an abreaviated version for a quick “looksee” and the detailed spreadsheet on the ftp site for a more in-depth view of the data gathered.

Yes, I think the negatives need to be addressed in some way. I will wait and Michelle can address your suggestion since she is doing the spreadsheet.

reality – at 08:41

I think the map posted in this thread: “Indonesia Oubreak Case Summaries NOCOMMENTARYPLEASE”

is far better than the text summaries. It really conveys how widespread the human cases have become. Whomever created this map - THANKYOU!!

Monotreme – at 09:04

Okieman, the map you created indicating cases is extremely useful. Thanks for doing this.

I understand the concern about false negatives. Since you now have the deaths and confirmed cases marked on the map, I can get the information I need.

Tom DVM – at 09:09

Okieman. That was really nice work on the map…I’m sure it took quite a bit of time to put together…Thanks!!

Where can I find the map and the spreadsheet? I just started reading this forum and I am very impressed with the work people are doing, but because of the length of this thread, it is hard to find things. Is there a search capability?

The article has been removed from the site, i don’t think they archive old articles, & just replace with new daily news.
According to the article, Bandung is the subdistrict(kecamatan) where all these suspects lived, not sure location of Tulungagung hospital, as i’ve not been following these Indo outbreaks closely.
Also, the article never mentioned any dates of symptoms onset, hospitalisation in/out, death nor when the +ve result came back.
So, i suppose u can put DA & NA from Bandung(where they lived) or the Tulungagung hospital, whichever is clearer to u.
And based on the article, u can add the other 3 Tio(+ & died), DAP & PR.

I revisit IndoOutbreak II thread for Tulungagung cases & came across [[http://www.jawapos.com/index.php?act=detail_radar&id=136334&c=115|Don’t Hide AI 8/27] article posted by Influentia2

It was basically a plea/outcry from the public to the authorities in Bandung not to hide or have closed policy on H5N1/bird flu outbreaks.// I found the following interesting: Masyarakat dibuat gempar karena ada kasus flu burung yang tahu-tahu korbannya telah meninggal. Dia juga mengharapkan agar kasus tersebut tidak terulang lagi. which means …

The people were fearful because they knew of bird flu suspect cases(humans) that died. They hoped these cases will not be repeated.

Also to add to the article referred to on my previous post, it was stated 9 suspected cases blood samples from Bandung were sent to HK lab for testing of which 1 came back +ve (TioSP), others were negative or still awaiting results. Perhaps we need to watch more news coming from Bandung subdistrict.

Love the Indo outbreak thread!! Thanks all of you who work so hard on it!!! Small suggestion - wonder if there is any way to ‘reverse’ the way the thread reads - i.e. current day’s cases right under th emap on the top of the page, then work backwards to the day it started?? Wd be a bit easier to keep up with current news and see history/backtrack? Wd that be possible/desirable??

mammypoko, I’m unsure how to document this article. I’m showing 9 patients already as having been in the Bandung hospital (but they are all from Cikelet). So it isn’t clear to me that there are new patients, except Tio’s name and the initials PR and DAP don’t match anyone listed. So, I’ve tentatively added these 3 dated 8/27 in Bandung.

From other posts today, I’ve added 3 in Cikelet, 2 of which we don’t have names for and are at home.

Question:

Are we viloating copyrights by reprinting Indonesian articles in their entirety here? They tend to be very long and take up a lot of thread space. Might it be better to just paste a relevant portion of the article (as on teh news thread) with a link - even if the article is not in English and those who want to read the entire thing will have to toggletext it?

DennisCat 11:26

XanonymousX – at 11:15

My understanding (not a lawyer) is that the Fair Use doctrine allows for using a portion of a news article for comment and criticism. The advice I was given was to use no more than 3 paragraphs, and allow comments. Having ”pure” news listing by copying a significant portion of longer articles (or using the entire article) is a “no-no” - But using small portions of articles and allowing comments and critiques is OK. The idea is that you just cannot copy someone elses articles and open your own news paper or news service.

I try to just post the “important part” and then link to the article. And again, my understanding is that we have to allow comments on the article to stay legal even if some don’t like to see comments.

XanonymousXat 11:32

DennisC – at 11:26

Thank you for that.

It has seemed to me that people are toggletexting entire articles and posting them here. I was concerned that we might be violating fair use laws in doing this - and those darned things are so long when put up in their entirety. What’s more, machine translations make for lousy reading.

When someone posts an entire article, I feel like, “Wow, I’d better read the entire thing. Every word here must be imporant for someone to have seen fit to post the whole thing.”

It would be nice if people would only post what is most relevant from the article and not the whole thing. Of course this is just one person’s opinion.

MaMaat 12:12

Commonground at 11:08, thanks. I’ll start as soon as I get back. In the meantime, I’ll use my spare moments to catch up on recent events in Indonesia to start off on the right foot.

I second your idea on posting just the more relevant excerpts from the Indonesian articles.

Some days I would have time for little else after I deciphered and digested those articles. Then, I’m not really sure I’m understanding them correctly, so it kinda seems pointless. Since I do have a life outside FluWiki, I just can’t devote that much time to the articles and usually just scan them and then look to the summaries for the facts and figures. And no headache;) JMO

pugmom, thanks for all the info. I’ve tried to post it properly. I called the date on the Semarang patient 8/26 since the hospitalization was for a week already. I’m hesitant to include the 9 other patients from Semarang as they could have been early in 2006, and I think the scope of this info capture begins in July, after the earlier Jakarta cluster ended. Maybe more information will come out on them if they are recent cases.

But that brings me to a question. On the WHO’s website, Updates 24 & 25 for situation in Indonesia, they have listed a 16 year old male from West Java who died on Aug-7 and a 17 year old female from Jakarta Province who died on Aug-8.

We didn’t pick up these earler cases, because we really started by following the Cikelet cases. But since this project has expanded, if we’re going to offer a true count since late July, I think these cases should be added. I’ve also added additional info and changed a few dates for the Cikelet patients to incorporate symptom dates posted by WHO.

Yesterday, it all ran together in my head and I couldn’t concentrate. Today has been better, but we all are relying on Michelle so much. I post the new stuff, but am guilty of not always writing it down on my own latest summary. Thank you so much for those articles Influentia2. It took me awhile to piece them together, but they cleared up lots of pieces.

I had Bandung as W. Java which was making no sense when the Tulungagung hospital was in E. Java. I finally realized that Tio (5) is the boy that the WHO’s update 21 discusses. Bandung is in E. Java. Tio died on June 16, which is before our tracking period, but because his neighbors were tested (negative) within our period, I’ve added him to the list. But please note when the spreadsheet gets uploaded, I’m not counting Tio in the cumulative tally.

Okieman – at 23:51

Michelle,

Bandung is in W. Java. Tulungagung is in E. Java.

Sorry if that clarification makes things difficult again.

02 September 2006

Michelle in OK – at 00:00

Okieman, I hope there is a Bandung Subdistrict in E. Java (see article at 20:08.) Otherwise, the file I just sent you and dude has an incorrect location. Perhaps it is a city vs subdistrict confusion. The file is labeled Bandung Subdistr. since I couldn’t determine the city.

To all tracking the news, I hope the upload of the spreadsheet can be done, because it is much easier than copy/paste for me. If it can’t be posted for some reason, I’ll go back to the old method.

Michelle in OK – at 00:16

Its late, so I’m not making further changes tonight or they will likely be wrong. I think I didn’t put Tulungagung as the city, because I thought that was just the location of the hospital and not necessarily where the patients were from.

In hindsight, it looks like the article does in fact discuss dead chickens in Tulungagung. I’ll take a fresh look tomorrow. Okieman, if you are of the opinion that Tulungagung is the city, feel free to show it that way on your next map. Thanks.

Okieman – at 00:17

Michelle,

Would this be the cause of the discrepancy? Below are excerpts from the 20:08 post. Notice the words I have made bold. You might might go back and look and see if you misread. Easy to do with these toggletext translations.

“Metrotvnews.com, Tulungagung: the Animal Service the Tulungagung Regency, East Java on Wednesday (5/7), finally took the sample of blood and the organ in the poultry in the Sukorejo Village, the Bandu Subdistrict, Tulungagung. 2. Nursari (46)

Michelle in OK – at 09:50

dbg, Thanks… that matches my understanding.

The current tally is up to 81. Please be aware that almost all of the increase is from picking up older cases from articles which have resurfaced. Only Syahril fortune (8M) was a recent addition dated 8/31.

The file you want is called “Bird Flu Indonesia Upload 9–01 (2)”. That data should match Okieman’s map.

Link is repeated here: ftp://www.singtomeohmuse.com/

Commonground, the Jakarta case was within our time frame, so I picked it up from the WHO link at 18:58, update 25.

As usual, please review the data in your area to ensure everything is posted properly. Thanks.

Commonground – at 17:11

Michelle in OK - your spreadsheet is so very impressive. Thank you and Dude for helping get it together. And also the Mods!

pugmom – at 17:18

Michelle—thanx for helping me upload and copy new summary—I’m lost without it. An amazing piece of work you did. Any suggestions on how to print out Okieman’s map?

pugmom – at 18:00

CG—sorry, I overlooked your question/post concerning Rasmita yesterday. Yes, I have her as negative. It just dawned on me that she is the same person as K Boru Saragih. (I thought it was just a little bit odd that two 35 y.o. women were having miscarriages!)

Michelle in OK – at 18:03

pugmom, Thanks. I didn’t really mean to capture that much information when it started, but that is the only way I could keep people’s names straight.

The map is a .jpg file. I saved it to “My Pictures” and can pull it up with the program I use to print digital pictures. Beware if you want to print it though, since the background is dark blue it will take a lot of ink to print. I’ll likely just pull it up and view online full screen. It is really useful that way.

Okieman – at 18:05

pugmom – at 17:18, If you go to the link below you can print out the map.

http://www.fluwikie.com/uploads/Geographic/Cases3.pdf

On a different note. Michelle pointed out to me that what I have down as a town, Sukabumi, was the name of the hospital. The town where the case probably should be accounted for is Cisolok. The reason this is of some significance is that Cisolok is in West Java, not in Sumatra where I have mapped Sukabumi being located. I have changed my map and Michelle has changed her spreadsheet, but unless the mods and Dude want to go through the hassel of changing the map and uploading the corrected spreadsheet we will wait until the next update to make the corrections on the Wiki. Let us know if it should be done differently. One of the problems with the data I am using for populated places in Indonesia is that there might be 5–10 places with the same name. There are multiple villages with the same name. This shouldn’t be surprising, it is the same here in the US but it does make it difficult to identify the correct location at times to report on the map. If you notice closely, the location of Cikelet has changed in the present map versus the previous one. There are two places named Cikelet, but one of the news articles mentioned it being south of Bandung, so I changed the map to make the correction. There could be additional issues similar to this, so just be aware of it and let me know if a correction needs to be made. Thanks.

pugmom – at 18:06

CG—did the summary miss those 3 patients from SE Sulawesi you posted yesterday at 12:03 (Mutmaina, Haris, and Sri?)

Okieman – at 18:08

Michelle in OK – at 18:03

It has been posted as a .pdf at the link I mention above. I might make for a better picture on your computer using it.

Okieman – at 18:11

Correction “It might make for a better picture”

pugmom – at 18:13

CG—nevermind, I found those 3 people (I have been reading the summary wrong—small print, you know, not bad eyes.)

Okieman – at 18:15

Ya’ll might want to check out this link for news sources in Indonesia. It is not all comprehensive I have found, but it is quite good.

http://www.abyznewslinks.com/indon.htm

Commonground – at 18:26

pugmom - at 18:13, you’re eye’s are probably fine - on the other hand I don’t even remember posting the 3 people. I’m sticking to posting only Sumatra, because otherwise I end up where I was before we broke into teams……I’ve been combing the sites you sent me and posting a few things over at the news thread. So far, Sumatra is quiet… :-)

Okieman - thanks for the map, it’s awesome. I’ll checkout the site you posted.
Michelle in OK - good idea about saving the map, I should have thought of that. Would it refresh/reload when I hit the refresh button?

Michelle in OK – at 18:39

Okieman, you are right, it is much clearer viewing the .pdf file instead of as a .jpg. Commonground, I don’t know about the refresh regarding the map.

It would be handy to have the map open at the same time as researching and posting. I’m going to try the ( ) designation before the link and see if it works.
Link to Map Window

Michelle in OK – at 18:43

Yeah! It worked, but the description of what I did disappeared. Between the parenthesis was (% newwin %) without spaces.

Michelle in OK – at 19:06

I had the spreadsheet set to fit on 2 legal pages when it prints, but it does make the size really small and hard to read. If you have Excel, you can set it to print however you’d like under File - Page Setup. You can also hide columns if there is information you don’t want to print by putting the cursor in that column and choosing Format - Column - Hide. You can also change the paper size, etc… Whatever you do won’t affect anyone else as we don’t have the capability to resave a modified file.

PS: File - Page Setup - Print preview will keep you from wasting a lot of paper like I’ve done in the past. Then it will be the way you want it when you finally do print.

AnnieBat 20:39

Michelle in OK - if visitors hold down their SHIFT key and then click the link it aill open in a new window - I use that option regularly to check out links from this site. Hope that helps :-)

Michelle in OK – at 23:39

AnnieB, I did not know that. Thank you very much. It saves so much time when you don’t have to wait for the discussion thread to refresh each time you come back from a link.

(I’m just now becoming Internet literate… it’s amazing what the threat of a global illness will motivate you to learn.)

AnnieB – at 20:39 You are brilliant! Thanks, that will save so much time and effort.

dbg – at 00:37

pugmom – at 00:20, I was getting ready to post that article when yet another friend called with yet another emergency. Sigh. I’ve located Tanete — it’s in South Sulawesi, on the east coast, about 70 km southeast of Maros. I haven’t been able to pinpoint Two (or Dua) Boccoe yet. The only one I’ve found so far is in East Kalimantan, and I can’t imagine why the Bone Regency would be dealing with it, so there’s got to be another one — I’ll keep looking.

I know Dude posted the password to the spreadsheet, but I seem to have put it in a very safe place. Could someone tell me again, please, if I promise not to lose it again?

Btw, do the forum pages look huge to everyone, or is it just me?

dbg – at 00:39

Never mind, it was just me; somehow my text size got changed to ‘larger’.

Dude – at 00:44

pugmom – at 00:47

Thanks, Dude and pugmom, I was able to see the spreadsheet - amazing how well it works when you do it correctly…

Ruth – at 08:16

So how many people actually tested positve in Aug.? Officially. How many are we pretty sure had it, but are not confirmed? You guys are all doing a great job, I can’t seem to keep track of all of the people. Does anyone know if there seems to be more or less cases than in July?

FloridaGirlat 09:40

Michelle and all the other Indonesian flu sleuths,

(Michelle… Thanks for your spreadsheet). I have also made a spreadsheet based on the information you guys have teased out of the news. The appearance is much different than Michelle’s. It is a more graphic method for viewing. (The data on it is mostly the same. But where I found different information I marked with pink triangles) It also has separate pages for locations. I don’t want to infringe on your work, but do you think it would be appropriate that I could also ask that it be posted? It would help with those who “see” by graphic representations.

I am also working on a Genogram to show relationships…. This should be done by tonight.

‘’‘Update - Sumatra” Looks like Rasmita Boru Lingga (35F) is/has been released. I’m confused on the lower section of the article that I highlighted…..Kondisi?, and also…..Keluarga?

I think the more ways to look at data and information the better. You might pose your question on the “Ask the Mod” thread about the best way to get the spreadsheet to them and how it should be posted (ftp site, wiki or forum).

I will email them to a moderator to post.

Hi everyone, I volunteered to watch Jakarta last week. I haven’t done anything of importance yet and have felt terribly guilty. I was asked to start teaching an 8th grade class in addition to my 7th grade classes and this starts Tuesday. That’s what I’ve been focusing on. I have to bow out of this for now and hope that you will forgive me. I feel awful about this as I thought my time was freeing up.

pugmom – at 21:09

We totally understand Orlandpreppie—don’t feel guilty about it, you sound terribly busy and some of us have alot more free time. Hopefully, later, you can come back on and help. Continue to post, esp if you just happen to come across something interesting. We don’t know how much longer we can all hold out either, as the amount of people is becoming overwhelming. Good luck with your new venture.

Michelle, you have absolutely captured the essence of what a great job you guys are doing. Anyone who has tried to follow the outbreaks this past few weeks would arrive at exactly that spot, and most of us just gave up simply because there are not enough hours in a day.

I just wanted to say how much I really really appreciate all the efforts that all of you have put in, that we can just check in once in a while and have an idea of what is going on. I can’t speak for others but you have NO IDEA how you’ve made my life a lot saner! So a big thank you, and if you need help of any kind, just shout. No, just SHOUT! OK?
