Edna Mode - at 22:42 “Uh, JV, you’ve done just fine. This is not a Congressional inquiry, and if you don’t feel like posting your source, screw the lot. You have clearly established yourself as a legitimate contributor to the wiki in the past. If people can’t take you at your word and place confidence in what you post, they are free to keep on scrollin’. Thank you again for the update.”

I like your style! Thanks.

JV – at 03:53, Thank you for posting the answers to your follow-ups. If you recall, I was the one over on the news thread who suggested you clarify the speaker’s intention re: fall pandemic in the US vs. *anywhere* in the world. Having been so specific in your follow-up question, the reply was much less definitive about no outbreak in the fall. I find that informative in itself. Thank you, again, for asking for clarification on that specific point.

Can you please explain ‘informative in itself’? Thanks.

Bronco Bill – at 00:30

Please stop dissecting every facet of every comment regarding JV’s post from 3 days ago. He posted it as information for each of us to read and interpret in our own way. There’s no real need to keep pulling it apart. Thanks

Amen. Thanks JV.

I agree BB. This is a rumour thread and we need to encourage people to post here, not give them a hard time. Why? because I believe that the only advantage we have over 1918 is the internet. Trust me when the bird poop hits the fan it will be on the internet first. Furthermore, when will we know that it’s time to ‘tip’ the wikiswan?

Recently the United Nations planned to conduct a worldwide survey. The survey contained just one question: “Would you please give your honest opinion on a solution for the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey turned out to be a failure.

In Africa, people didn’t know what ‘food’ meant;

In East Europe, no one knew what ‘honest’meant;

In Western Europe, no one knew what ‘shortage’meant;

In China, no one could understand the term, ‘opinion’;

In the Middle East, no one knew what ‘solution’ meant;

In South America, they didn’t recognize the word ‘please’;

En in America, they had no idea what was meant by ‘the rest of the world’.

This is a link to an expatriot reporter living and reporting in Indonesia. His name is Chad Bouchard. He recently did a report for BBC/ PRl and WGBH in Boston (Radio) on bird flu. He has interviewed Jones Ginting with his wife and kids (photo link), and an FAO representative. His blog features stories about his experiences and lends flavor to our understanding of the country and their attemps at fighting bird flu. For any that are interested, his blog is here:

And old Europe thinks that all Americans are a bunch of red neck cowboys who live in Jesusland.

Enough with the stereotyping already!

lily – at 10:44

I guess we are all just isolationists here in the states. How I wish we could be, in regards to the flu and a lot else.

Ocean2 – at 11:09

Jefiner at 1:39- I don’t know about “Old Europe” since I’ve only lived in Amsterdam and have traveled little in the rest of Europe. But I can assure you that all trendy business people and equally trendy politicians here (in the Netherlands) adore the U.S’s way of doing business and governing. Of course all the arts are followed closely, too …

Unfortunately they also have strong predjudices against the ‘average’ American, without understanding how really tough it is to make a decent living in the states. Please be assured I’m not slamming anyone- it’s just a joke. I hope you can enjoy it without reading anything more into it. Be well.

All righty then, bring on the American jokes, and we can discuss the pot smoking, prostitute frequenting, tulip sniffing, gouda making, wooden shoe wearing and movie director-murdering inhabitants of the Netherlands.

When I took my usual route to town today I was passing cemetary #1 and took notice that they were expanding it.As I passed cemetary # 2 I was startled to see that it was also undergoing expansion.I stopped by and spoke to a workman who said he had no idea why they were expanding but they had been told to prepare the neighboring field for cemetary use.I wish this was a joke.

Building some new Grain elevators in Roanoke, VA. Strange since we’re not exactly in the grain belt.

heddiecalifornia – at 02:33

Malachi — could just be that TPTB are just getting ready for the total anhiliation of Medicare/Medicaid and the upcoming Baby Boomer bulge hitting the end of the line.

Oremus — sure those aren’t Navy missile silos related to current axis of evil tensions?

Oremus – at 03:07

I’m thinking more in line for food storage for pandemic. They’re almost complete.

BTW, Airforce has control of missle silo’s and they’re below ground. Navy has Ohio class boomers (each being the fourth most powerful nation in the world).

Anyone heard of this? It’s new to me…..

The first case of “bluetongue” disease has been detected in France, the French Agriculture Ministry said on Thursday. The case was detected in a cow in the Ardennes region in northeast France. The infected cow presented weak symptoms, which are not dangerous to human beings, said the ministry. France has reported the case to the European Commission and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The concerned animal has been put under control. The strain of bluetongue, a virus that is deadly to sheep, isbelieved to come from sub-Saharan Africa, according to the European Commission. The disease is characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes, congestion, swelling and haemorrhage. Sheep are generally the worst affected, while cattle and goats do not usually show any clinical signs of the disease but can carry the virus for a certain period of time and transmit it to sheep, EU veterinary experts said. The French government has put livestock under surveillance since August 28, when outbreaks of bluetongue were detected in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

Dennis in Colorado – at 13:38

See article in Wikipedia.

“Bluetongue disease (also called catarrhal fever) is a non-contagious, arthropod-borne viral disease of ruminants, mainly sheep and less frequently of cattle, goats, buffalo, deer, dromedaries and antelope. There are no reports of human transmission. It is caused by the Bluetongue virus.”
“The pathogenic virus, Bluetongue virus of the genus Orbivirus is a member of the Reoviridae family. There are 24 serotypes. It is transmitted by a midge, Culicoides imicola and other culicoid species.”

gharris – at 13:49

Very interesting that it is transmitted by a midge!!! That may be important to us re H5N1 as Dr Niman says the deaths in Indon did not have the same sequence the birds do there?? At least, I think that’s what he says? :-) So finding the ‘vector’ should be very important in my opinion!

Commonground – at 14:05

Thanks Dennis in Colorado - learn something new every day! And just in case there are those that don’t know what a midge is:

Midge may refer to: Midge (insect), small, two-winged flying insects

Okidokie – at 14:17

Mother of Five….I hope your Brother is doing better. If you have some time, could you dig a little deeper on the below form this NewRumorsIII thread…

Mother of Five – at 21:03 O.K., there have been no juicy rumors since the 15th of this month. I think the news thread has been much more stimulating/frightening, than any rumors we could come up with lately.

I thought some of you may find this of interest and I apologize for lack of specific names or locations. Alright, my sister-n-law told me of an older couple that have been family friends since she was young. They are currently serving as a mission president/couple for the LDS church stateside (I don’t even know what state.) They were approached by the Homeland Security Dept. for a meeting to discuss the church’s evacuation plans to get the missionaries in their respective areas out of dodge, so-to-speak. The couple was told that there is very credible evidence that a dangerous disease has been intentionally planted in nearly every major city in the U.S. and that they are expecting an outbreak any day now.

spok – at 14:38

Does Homeland security want LDS Missionaries back home to help out here? Is that why they would contact this couple?

MAinVAat 14:53

spok @14:38, if you check out the RumorsIII thread before this one [link at top of the page] I believe it says that DHS wanted the missionaries back home because they claim there is the potential of a bio-terrorist attack [virus] in major cities. Just remember that this is the Rumors thread, so we don’t know yet how accurate that info really is.

Hurricane Alley RN – at 17:37

Okidokie - I do believe that rumor is an old one. In MHO someone is playing a nasty game. Hope it doesn’t come back and bite them in the butt. I think I’ll pull my fear factor from the news thread. Then again I could be wrong. I hope not! gina

heddiecalifornia – at 18:29

I was just at Costco and saw in the Dog and Cat food aisle huge displays of bulk packaged dog treats, Cadet brand, that were basically jerky like flat sticks of dried duck breast and dried chicken meat.

Hubby said “oh, the dogs would like these” so I looked closely at the lables. Both types were ‘made in China’ and both were marked that they were made from meat that was NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

Hmmmm — you think?? no, they wouldn’t ship contaminated culled bird meat over here, would they??

Worldman – at 18:30

Ok, I thought we killed this LDS rumor. Like I said before, I am LDS, pretty well connected, and I have sent out several feelers.

Nothing like this alleged meeting has taken place. If someone could get me a name of the Mission President or even the geographic area, I would be happy to track it down. But for now, all of my sources are saying “urban legend”

Have a great day!!!

Malachi, the other day I was running errands and passed a concrete forms foundry (that I drive by at least two or three times a week). Aside from culverts and septic tanks, one of the things this place makes are concrete burial vaults. Not sure if they reorganized their yard or what, but there were rows and rows of these burial vaults that I’d never seen before. Usually they have about five or ten on hand.

Unrelated, but also in my town, I have noticed at Sam’s that many prep items have been moved to the front of the store where they normally put their high-margin seasonal/impulse items. When I commented on this, my husband (who completely supports my prep efforts) did say he thought that was a little paranoid. But two or three days later I see at my local Shaw’s 4×4x3-foot wire bins full of canned meat products (that I have never seen stocked at this store and I’ve been shopping here since I was in high school) and—drumroll, please—crank flashlights.

We don’t live even remotely close to any natural disaster zone (unless you consider snowstorms to be disasters. I love ‘em—even when the power is out). This tells me someone is getting the message, and I’m glad.

Walmart is a sponsor of the Safe America Foundation, as documented by banshee in yesterday’s News Report. Website at http://www.safeamerica.org/

So looks like they are aware of, and found a way to promote and profit from, BF prep.

04 September 2006

On the fence – at 01:53

I had to go to WalMart to get some lanterns the other night. Tropical Depression Ernesto knocked out our lights. They had about 400 crank lights in the sporting/camping area. They were those multiple use lights with radio, siren, compass, cell phone charger, and mirror. Odd to see so many there. They weren’t exactly flying off the shelves but there were a number already off the shelf.

Bronco Bill – at 01:57

So looks like they are aware of, and found a way to promote and profit from, BF prep.

Of all the companies out there, Wally World will be the first to try to make a profit off of BF. Their marketing strategists are all on the cutting edge of world and local news, and know what is on peoples’ minds. This is not a bad thing, since they do keep their prices at a relatively low level…just an observation. They are also one of the first to donate supplies to devastated areas after an emergency…ie.: Katrina and Rita

Bronco Bill – at 01:58

Oh, and my disclaimer: I don’t work there, nor do I know the official Greeter at the front door. ;-)

blackbird – at 02:23

BB, agreed. My company has some people who used to work at Wally, and that’s consistent with what I’m hearing. Did you know that pop-tarts are the #1 item for hurricane prep?

Probably everyone but me things that’s a no-brainer.

Going to need to download a new video driver, I guess.

On another note, I had to step over 2 dead birds in my post office parking lot today. I called the local health department, and they said that the birds had probably been dead for too long to test for any diseases. She was talking West Nile Virus, and I was talking AI. She said that they would send someone out to get the little carcasses to test them, but Bird Flu was not on their radar. Will be starting info blitz on local health department again.

heddiecalifornia – at 01:30

Deb P — The marketing people have decided to name the month between “back to school” sales and “Halloween candy and costume sales” as “September is Emergency Preparedness Month” and a lot of stores have jumped on that bandwagon to improve sales. In light of the fact that Katrina happened just before September, and the remainder of the month is subject to Hurricanes, the 9/11 tragedy was in September, and even the last couple of California earthquakes occurred in early October, this might be a good time. It helps them clear out all the camping stuff from the summer, and put out stuff for Christmas gifts early, and bridges the time between back to school and Christmas. A truly win win situation.

Mother of Five – at 03:12

I thought I’d post a note that Pres. Bush met with the president of the LDS church this past Thursday at the church headquarters in SLC. This is actually not a rumor. It was taken from an LDS church magazine. It doesn’t say what was discussed during the 45 minute meeting though. However, I thought some posters might find that interesting….

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 08:08

There was another mention of a meeting between the LDS & someone from the Administration……..I can’t remember what it was, but at the time, someone who IS LDS checked into it and turned up empty…….wonder now if that first report was true afterall.

anonymous – at 09:29

The President was speaking at a conference in Salt Lake and met with the leaders of the LDS Church for a short while after the speach. The speach and the meeting with the LDS leaders had been planned for months. The President typpically meets with them when he’s in Salt Lkae, since they represent a strong political powerbase in the State.

Green Mom – at 10:07

regarding pop-tarts- They’re the first thing in MY prep bag. They are portable, easy to eat, cheap (enough) full of sugar(energy) keep for a long time-we’ve certainly not had any pop-tarts spoil on us, and at least in my family no one has gotten sick on them. Kind of weird-but there it is.

Mother of Five – at 22:44

Yes, Anonymous at 9:29, it’s true. President Bush has met with the church president at least four times during his two terms. It’s not all that earthshattering of news, but, like I said, I thought some might think it noteworthy.

And, I was the one that posted about the LDS mission president and the homeland security rep. for an area meeting. I have spoken with my sister-n-law and she has been unable to find out more info. Dead end, sorry I couldn’t find out something more accurate and helpful. I posted the info. thinking I would be able to get more info. :)

Ethiopian authorities announced that [there is an outbreak of a] new camel disease in the Somali region of Ethiopia. Official said efforts are done to contain the outbreak.
The Somali regional State Animal, Crop and Natural Resources Development Bureau disclosed that it has provided treatment to more than 178,600 camels with a view to containing the spread of communicable diseases.
[snip]
Camel morbidity and mortality in the Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia in the late 1990s was attributed mainly to camel pox (or the rarer parapox) and to the relatively new “camel respiratory disease syndrome,” the etiology of which was not clear.

Camels? We got crocodiles too: Undiagnosed deaths, crocodiles - Australia

“These mucosal legions [lesions?] on the crocodiles here could also suggest a new manifestation of the pox virus; it is possible ‘’‘the water birds that migrate between the farms have been passive carriers of whatever disease is affecting the population’‘’. We need a proper diagnosis, and that can only be done by analyzing the microscopic sections of infected animals. ‘’‘Whatever it is, this is the highest mortality rate I’ve ever seen for such a large population.’‘’”

I was wondering if this might be another avenue for us to watch. The production of eggs goes down dramatically when infected with H5N1 (at least that’s what I thought I read somewhere….). Here is a site that keeps track of the production of eggs. Maybe we should watch this for a sign, especially when they are saying there will be more LP H5N1 coming….

National Agricultural Statistics Service

Chickens and Eggs This file contains the number of layers on hand, eggs per 100 layers and total eggs produced during preceding month by type of flock by major states and U.S.; pullets added and layers disposition; layers moulted and moult completed; U.S. commercial hatchery data on chicks hatched; number of eggs in incubators; number of pullet chicks for hatchery supply stocks.

July Egg Production Up 1 Percent
U.S. egg production totaled 7.64 billion during July 2006, up 1 percent from last year. Production included 6.56 billion table eggs, and 1.09 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.02 billion were broiler-type and 66 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during July 2006 averaged 341 million, up 1 percent from last year. July egg production per 100 layers was 2,241 eggs, up slightly from July 2005. All layers in the U.S. on August 1, 2006, totaled 341 million, up 1 percent from last year. The 341 million layers consisted of 284 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 54.0 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.76 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on August 1, 2006, averaged 71.7 eggs per 100 layers, up 1 percent from August 1, 2005. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Down 5 Percent

Bird Guano – at 01:03

So for those of us that haven’t been following it.

What exactly ARE the latest rumors ?

DennisCat 10:39

Bird Guano – at 01:03 “latest rumors ? “

Same rumors as always,

1) WHO did something and people try to read into it what they think. (New WHO panel= new phase level). 2) Someone posts a tongue in cheek item in some thread and someone else takes it too seriously (government has a plan and this is part of it, I have special inside information) 3) Pigs, dogs, dolphins, cats, bats, flies, (pick one) are the hidden carrier and “they” know it. 4) Information sources “dry up” and that means something is happening. 5) Some government is covering up “secret” cases. 6) Some herb or vitamin will save the entire planet. 7) Birds are migrating with H2H virus. 8) We are sure that the CFR (fatality rate) will be 0.01%, 2.0%, 25%, 50%, 90%, (pick a number). 9) Their will be roving bands of the half dead that will destroy civilization but your power and water will of course remain on. 10) Sunspots and the orbit of Saturn caused all this Flu stuff and you can see it in your charts. 11) 10 million people in NYC can save them selves by all getting in their cars and driving to a field in Kansas or a mountain top in Wyoming without water, power, food, no gas for the car and fishing in one pond that only had 100 trout stocked in it last year. 12) If you get drunk you can wake up in a year and it will all be over. 13) and there is a sale on rice or beans at XXXX.

Sorry, I just could not pass up the chance to have a little fun.

Well, actually, some of those rumors might have some basis in fact. And I myself HAVE seen a UFO (although I still remain a skeptic) with my very own eyes (although not close enough to see detail). The one depicted in the movie Fire in the Sky. Verrrrry interesting.

DennisCat 12:27

Scaredy Cat UFO- without “tipping my hand”, I am known in some UFO/ antigravity circles as part of the government conspiracy - having done classified USAF reports on anti-G items. (my degree is in biophysics but I “do physics”) But my problem is I wanted to “look under the hood” to see what makes the wheels turn and I just never found one parked with the engine running.

Yes, rumors can be true, and they can be false. The trick, of course, is to identify them. Just check the source and check the primary sources when at all possible (pick up the phone and call or email- it is easy).

Gary Near Death Valley – at 13:07

anonymous – at 11:58 “I’m not saying a fire might not errupt, I’m just saying that until it does, maybe folks can tone down the rhetoric.” I dont see anyone yelling FIRE, but I do hear others saying that the situation is getting worse. Like the nightclub fire, that killed so many back east a couple of years ago, when the flames went to the foam on the walls and ceiling, those that saw that, started to head to one of the few exits that was not locked,,,,and they escaped, while the others could not accept the fact that, whoops a fire was actually out of control. Seen this far too much in the fire service, optimistic comments in emergencies KILLS. Same thing happened in the Twin Towers, when the intercom came on and told people just to stay in place. People should be realists not optimistic or pessimistic because what is left is realism, and the reality is the avian bug is spreading, and if/when it does go general pandemic, I do not plan on being one at the front of the room waiting for the crowd to go thru a single door and get trapped.

DennisC UFO - Yeah, I’d like to find one parked with the engine running too, although I do remember that when I saw (from a car) the UFO (not saying piloted by aliens; just unidentified) flying over the exact area that 7 or so forest rangers later claimed one of their group was abducted, thinking that if I’m watching them….maybe they’re watching me….and I was really really scared because my ex and I were many miles from our destination, on a dark road, very alone, in the middle of nowhere (actually the road between Payson, AZ and Heber)and although I didn’t “believe” in UFO’s I thought that if stories of abductions were true, we were in the “perfect” place for such a thing to happen.

Posting this here. It’s an Indonesian Blog. It’s dated for 9/24, but a few references makes me think it was written a year ago. I’ve copied it all to a word program and will only include what I thought was interesting…..

NORMAL FLU OR BIRD FLU?
Distinguished BIRD FLU AND the LAIN ILLNESS
Dr Widodo Judarwanto SpA
CHILDREN ALLERGY CENTER

The increase in the case of bird flu to humankind in Indonesia apparently very worrying. When someone experienced the high fever and the cough then that raged in our thoughts at that time, the sign of bird flu or not? It was just natural that this excessive concern happened. The illness trip that was caused by the virus H5N1 this was very fast and very frightening. In the calculation of the sign day got heavy very fast could threaten the spirit with ”case fatality rate” more than 80%. Initially was difficult distinguished with the other illness. To ascertain the existence of the illness thus must be confirmed with the inspection the sophisticated laboratory. In Indonesia the official laboratory that was acknowledged by WHO was still not available. So as we still must send to the laboratory overseas, like Hong Kong.

The INSPECTION LABORATORIUM the Inspection to penunjang the diagnosis really was needed in penatalaksanaan the sufferer. The laboratory inspection to confirm the existence of the bird flu infection in humankind was results of the positive virus culture of A influenza (H5N1) or results with the PCR inspection positive for influenza H5. The other inspection was the inspection serologis with the increase titer specific antibodies H5 as big as > 4 x or results with IFA positive for antigens H5. When with the inspection some this was stated posisitif then was stated as the case confirmed or the certain case. The other serology inspection was the specific inspection of the antibodies laboratory of 1 certain serum specimen for the A influenza virus (H5). But this inspection was still being not yet too sensitive. When positive results still it was considered the category of the case probable (was expected). The other laboratory inspection not to ascertain the existence of the bird flu infection. But only was limited to help considered the prognosis, determined the action kind as well as to remove the diagnosis of the illness equal lai him. This routine inspection was the complete blood inspection (haemoglobin, counted leucocytes, counted the leucocytes kind, trombosit, the rate endap blood), albumin, the globulin, SGOT/SGPT, ureum, kreatinin, kreatin kinase and the analysis of blood gas. The microbiology inspection that was needed was the inspection gram and the acid-resistant bacillus or culture of sputum and wiped off the throat.

The bird flu illness was recorded the first time it was identified in Italia more than in the last 100 years. At first, this illness was the animal illness that attacked the poultry nation. Bird flu or the plague of the poultry (fowl plaque) was the virus illness that attacked various poultry kinds, covered the chicken, the turkey, the dove, the water poultry, birds piaraan, as far as wild birds. This virus also attacked the pig, the horse, and the sea animal suckled like the whale and the seal. Finally was expressed by the virus H5N1 this was identified to the tiger, the cat and the leopard. Beforehand this animal was not regarded as bianatang that could be polluted by the bird flu virus. The pig also could tertular and as the spread intermediary to humankind. Later was expressed by the virus not only clung to skin, but was bred and bermutasi diperedaran blood of the pig animal.

The cause and the Spread Method to Manusia the Cause of birds to the poultry nation was the virus of type influenza A. this frightening Virus was including family Orthomyxoviridae from the genus of influenza. The measurement of the Virions diameter was 80 through to 120 nm that have the shape of filament. The virus composition consisted of 8 segments was different from “negative-stranded RNA”. The sub-type H5 and H7 the bird flu virus was what was cause the plague with the high mortality rate (pathogenic). Only had one groove from the bird flu virus that the level of his deadly capacity to be high or high-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 that could infect humankind (zoonosis). From the research showed, the poultry that was sick by A influenza or the virus H5N1 could dismiss the virus in large quantities in his waste. The virus could survive in water up until four days to the temperature 22 derajad celcius and more than 30 days to zero derajad celcius. In the waste and the poultry body that were sick, the virus could remain older. This virus died in the heating 56 Celcius levels in 3 hours or 60 derajad celcius for 30 minutes. The material disinfektan fomalin and iodine could kill this frightening virus. The bird flu virus lived in the digestion channel of the poultry. Birds that were infected by the virus will dismiss this virus through saliva, the nose liquid, and the waste. Avian the influenza Virus avian could be spread against humankind with 2 roads. It was first that direct contamination was from the birds environment infected that contained the virus to humankind. The other method was through the intermediary of the pig animal. The spread it was suspected happened from the waste orally or through the respiratory tract. Bird flu could Jenyebar quickly around the poultry population with the high death. Moreover could spread between livestock breeding from an area to the other area. This illness could also attack humankind, through dirty air the virus. It did not yet have occurrence proof of the spread from humankind to humankind. Also was not yet proven by the existence of the spread to humankind through meat that was consumed. The person that had the big risk to be attacked by bird flu was the worker of poultry livestock breeding, the seller and penjamah the poultry.

What’s funny is when you ask an optimist whether they are an optimist or a pessimist, they say, “I’m an optimist.” When you ask a pessimist the same question they answer, “I’m a realist.” : )

The “reality” is that there is no emergency yet. Is there the potential for one? You bet. Could it happen really soon? You bet.

Could it not go pandemic anytime soon? That’s a possibility too. No one knows for sure. But until it does, it is does not qualify as an “emergency” as we are using the word here.

Prudent people buy insurance, have smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, etc. There is enough going with H5N1 to prompt prudent people to prepare. If you are smart, you are prepping.

That said, H5N1 has not gone pandemic yet and therefore it is not yet an emergency.

Commonground: Thanks for the translation. I believe Pugmom is e-mailing the good Dr….Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to have contact with someone in Indo (especially a doc willing to share braking news on the ground)? Good luck Pugmom.

pugmom – at 17:05

Well I guess it is not an emergency, unless, that is, you happen to live in Tulungagung.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 17:12

anonymous – at 13:45 I have never said that the bird flu HAS gone pandemic, those are your words. I am a realist, just as I had to be in the fire service, I see it as it is, and make judgements on how to react to a given situation. With the avian flu, I see the potential of it being rather nasty for the human race. I have not waited one for it to go pandemic before I do any prepping,,,,,I see enough going on that a prudent person, would begin to prep. I beg to differ with you in that it is NOT an emergency now. Of course it is an emergency over in Asia, ask any of the farmers etc, that have had millions of their flock culled, or ask the families of the dead and sick, if it is an emergency. Just because the emergency has not come to our shore does not make it any less of a problem.

Tom DVM – at 18:06

Gary Near Death Valley. It is time for anonymous to stop commenting on other’s positions and produce the evidence to indicate why there will be no pandemic or a mild pandemic…

…there isn’t any.

“Just because the emergency has not come to our shore does not make it any less of a problem.”

You are correct. But, speaking as an American it is not yet an emergency for us.

“Gary Near Death Valley. It is time for anonymous to stop commenting on other’s positions and produce the evidence to indicate why there will be no pandemic or a mild pandemic…

Tom, there also is no evidence that there will be a severe pandemic. Just because H5N1 is bad now does not mean A) that it will be the strain that goes pandemic or B) That it will be exceptionally lethal.

spiritinthewind – at 18:28

Anonymous 18:15 “speaking as an American it is not yet an emergency for us”

Here’s a NEWSFLASH for you: H5N1 is an equal opportunity destroyer. At the end of the day, it ain’t gonna matter where you live. Just because it’s not YET in our back yard, doesn’t remove the fact that this is an emergency for all of humanity.

Dr Dave – at 18:31

Anonymous: as long as we import goods, it is an emergency for us. As long as there is international air travel, it is an emergency for us. As long as the general public remains complacent, it is an emergency for us.

What so many of my friends, relatives, and colleagues fail to recognize is that this pandemic will affect their lifestyles. It will affect their incomes. It will affect their quality of life. And it may alter the course of human events for several years.

Right now, it may seem to be moving in slow-motion, like a bullet in “The Matrix”, but it is coming our way, nevertheless, and at some point in time it will cease to be “slo-mo”. It will happen at about 500 miles per hour, arriving on our shores in the lungs of an air travel passenger.

anonymous – at 18:37

spiritinthewind – at 18:28

You are being an alarmist. I have said prepping is important as we all never know what is going to happen. That said, we do not know that H5N1 will be the next pandemic, nor do we know if the next pandemic will come this winter or years from now. When the next pandemic comes we do not know if it will be severe or mild.

Understand that by saying we do not know what is coming, I am not saying do not prepare. But until we know we have a severe pandemic on our hands it is not an “emergency” no matter how much you choose to worry about it. These are facts.

anonymous – at 18:39

Dr Dave – at 18:31

And it might not.

Again, listen to yourself. This may very well not happen. We should all prepare, but this absolute certainty that H5N1 is it and that this will be a horrific pandemic are simply making assertions that cannot be backed up by fact.

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE NEXT PANDEMIC WILL BE LIKE

spiritinthewind – at 19:01

LOL! Moi? No, I am not an alarmist. I didn’t get in a tizzy over swine flu or Y2K or much of anything in the past. I don’t even get worried much anymore. It is what it is and I am ready for whatever. I conceed though, we really DON’T know if it will be H5N1, however, the evidence is stacking up and the verdict will be known soon enough. You make alot of those kind of statements, but produce very little in the way of evidence. At least I think it’s you, but it could have been your other brother anonymous or any one of 50 of your cousins with the same name. ;^)

When I made that statement about it being an emergency for humanity, I was looking at the bigger picture. I am not a rocket scientist, but it don’t take a rocket scientist to read the writing on the wall. In fact, it don’t take a scientist at all. But…the fact that the scientists that know the most about virus are alarmed, should not be overlooked. The fact that Dr. Webster identified H5N1 as the only virus that ever terrified him should not be overlooked. You can’t just pick out the facts you like ya know.

I got a great name for you. How about Joe Friday? Just the facts ma’am.

Have a nice day anonymous. Peace out.

anonymous: You tire me with your JIT perspective regarding responding to the expected severity and timing of the next panflu. If the next panflu is as far as ten years away, we as individuals, communities, and nations are still way behind the curve in getting ready enough to prevent catastrophe. Why and How will things change in the interim?

What magical mechanism will get things rolling to meet this inevitable threat? We are living on borrowed time.

Ten years in any other “time” than that colored by the perspective of easily distracted and dissuaded humans is very short indeed.

The fact is that this is now an emergency, but only if you cross over to “viral” time and truly realize that our civilization is on the bubble.
