Forum: Poll How Did You Learn of Flu Wiki

24 March 2006

ricewiki – at 00:54

How did you first find out about Flu Wiki? Thought it would be interesting to take an informal poll.

Me: From Woodson’s book, The Bird Flu Preparedness Guide (which I ordered online). He mentions the link in there.

moeb – at 00:57

at some recent point I must have read about flu wiki on wired.com or cnet. It was Dr. Webber’s ABC newscast that got my attention. Googling through the links on Bird Flu brought me here fairly soon

I googled it- on the advice of my family doc, who is really nice and wants me to survive!

Oremus – at 01:12

When I first went looking for dedicated flu sites, I googled H5N1 and got Crawford Killian’s site. I got the link there.

Greytpaws – at 01:15

I saw it in a big USA Today article on preparations for the bird flu back in December of last year (or late November…can’t remember exactly)and only saw it because I was greyhound-sitting for a family and they took the USA Today paper…I am very grateful to have come across it!

Greytpaws – at 01:16

KC that is amazing and virtually unheard of around here! Lucky for you to have such a good doctor!!!!

petperson – at 01:51

I found it through Effect Measure.

Worried in the city – at 03:14

I read it in a news article but I don’t remember which one. It must have been when the wiki first started because I checked the wiki and there wasn’t much there. Several months later I checked again and life has not been the same since.

STH – at 03:30

Saw a reference to it on the DailyKos blog (told you I was a lefty!) I read the diary series on disaster preparedness, then looked up Flu Wiki for more info. I didn’t think the bird flu was a big deal, but thought I would check the Wiki to make sure. Um, my thinking has changed a bit since then . . . .

I saw it referenced in a Yahoo News Story about 45 days ago. I think this thread is definetly relevent because I for one would like to know how much exposure the Wiki is getting. It is a good guage on general public opinion, and I am curious if we are just a select minority or if there is a broader interest from the general public - not just in prepping, but in educating themselves as well.

I was lurking the off-topic forum section at an online gaming site last autumn during the time the news media was reporting avian flu more heavily than usual.

Someone began a thread titled something like “Bird Flu, Should I Worry?” Most who answered scoffed at the issue, but two who responded gave well-informed and detailed analyses — enough to prompt a couple of people to find and visit the WHO and Fluwiki sites and post links. I’d already seen WHO, but Fluwiki was new to me.

Since then, Fluwiki is the second website I visit each morning. The first is the off-topic forums at the gaming site — the people there are sharper and better informed than most; I’ll know the flu is on the verge of being a mainstream issue when it hits their radar again.

After Hurricane Katrina, I started thinking about our safety. I watched TV and thought “this is only a hurricane/flood in a regional area and we can’t get it together”. Our country appeared weak and unorganized. If I saw the weakness then I’m sure that bad people with not very nice ideas saw it too. I started thinking that it might not be a bad idea to have a home in another country. I started researching other countries and their rules on ownership and such. I came across a few very interesting websites and one mentioned the bird flu. I googled it and after awhile I found the survive the flu.com website. Someone mentioned it there and I haven’t left since. It’s been seven months and alot of great information. I’m as prepared as I can be right now. Tomorrow’s another story.

I started checking the CDC website daily after 9/11 to keep up with the research on smallpox vaccine. When SARS broke and I read the clinical info there, I became quite alarmed and bought n95 masks - 4 of them - how’s that for laughs! In the course of reading a breaking news item I came across a warning that bird flu could be spread by cockfighting (I dispair of ever banning it in La.) and that referred me to an article by Killian in “The Tyee” which led me to crofsblog which led me here.

Jersey Girl – at 12:32

I saw an announcement on a political blog, probably Daily Kos, when the wiki first started. I bookmarked it at the time but didn’t start seriously exploring the site until months later.

mmmelody47 – at 12:59

After reading articles last year on August 1 and September 26 authored by Jon Barron, the Baseline of Health newsletter regarding bird flu, (particularly the 9–26 article) - I started to pay much closer attention. I don’t remember exactly when I found my way to the FW by googling - January 2006 or so, but am glad I did.

September 26, 2005 is the first time I read of cytokine storm. A memorable term for sure.

I visit another board regularly and no one there really seems to be taking the threat seriously. The few that have are constantly ridiculed, so I used Google to see if there was somewhere I could go and only deal with people who view this as a serious threat.

I’m in the camp where I’m not totally convinced that “THIS” strain will be the one to cause a global pandemic, but I think it’s silly to believe that history won’t eventually repeat itself.

bgw in MT – at 16:25

Avian influenza was on my radar last summer but I wasn’t as worried then. Along came NOLA and I suddenly realized if the government couldn’t get food, water, and meds in a timely manner to those poor people, we didn’t have a prayer or hope for help from the feds when the whole country was involved in an emergency. It was going to be “root little piggy or die”…and you’d better do your “rooting” in advance. I googled “Avian influence” and Fluwiki was the site mentioned most.

I was appalled when I found out about “just in time” inventory as that made the situation much worse than I had feared. Fluwiki’s information certainly got me off my duff and prepping. I also started sending emails to my grown daughters. When I got one of my son-in-laws on the email list things went into high gear down there in Texas. Now both daughters and their husbands are prepping. That’s three families, Melanie, that you’ve hopefully rescued with your $10,000. Multiply this by all the people that post and lurk here and I’d say you are having a whole lot of effect for the money spent. I’m sure Dem, Pogge, Anon22 and the Revere’s are heavily out of pocket, too. Do let us know when we can contribute to the cause. It’s not fair that you folks have all the work AND all the expense. Anyway thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the risk and the time.

I heard about fluwiki when I first was researching the bird flu and how to prepare for it. I found Avianflutalk from Google, and one of the first posts I read there was wondering where the wiki went, and how much good info was there. They were worried by the “disappearance” of fluwiki. So of course I had to come here and see the site for myself.. I don’t post often, but come here all the time. Thanks, all, for the great info and professional running of the forum.

Mr White42 – at 01:13

I had read a bit about Avian Influenza and was intrested in the avian species, mostly, because to me, they represent the closest thing we have to pre-historic mammals. Strip a bird (pick any bird) of its feathers and you have a tiny dinosaur.

Then, I saw a satirical cartoon of George W. Bush looking into a “spider hole” with a chickhen down below labeled as {Bird Flu} and the caption…

Finally found the weapon of mass destruction.>-

After that I continued to look for info and added Orange’s blog (the coming influenza pandemic?)onto my yahoo page and connected the news items and available information into Personal Brain Technologies.

BTW, my Brain name is 42. Homage to Douglas Adams.

My husband was a doctor, so I am interesting in medical things, as well as a million other subjects that intrigue me, and help me pass the minutes, hours and years without a trace of boredom. So flu was on my mind. Idly I googled it up and after Who, I found Flu wiki. that was either the end of September or October. At first I found the prepping to seem quaint, but then reasonable, yet I have never really gotten to be a prepper. Still am interested. When my interest is satisfied I’ll be gone. Either it will happen before my interest declines, or it won’t. Either way, I will be much better prepared than I would have been if I hadn’t come in from the cold.

Got here through Google, trying to get some answers to questions about setting up some kind of solar powered backup system as we add to our hurricane/disaster supplies for this hurricane season. I’ve been too busy trying to fix my house, help others here (NOLA) and getting ready for this hurricane season to worry much about bird flu, but I’m glad I found this place so I can become more informed. After dealing with Katrina (ok, still dealing with Katrina), I’m well aware of the need to be prepared for disasters in general (and have a much better idea of what is needed to be prepared), whether it be a hurricane, bird flu or some other disaster! At least I can say I’m fairly well prepared in the case of a pandemic simply by virtue of being prepared for another Katrina. Anyway, that’s how I’ve ended up here - and I’m very thankful for the folks that are helping me figure out my solar power questions.
