I was recently interviewed for a segment on Norway’s TV2, but don’t know when they plan to air it. My focus is on home preparations (see http://www.fluwikie.com/index.php?n=Consequences.FluPandemicPreparednessGuide ).

Anyone see my segment on Norway TV2?

I know Spanish, a little Italian and German, but am unfortunately completely ignorant of Norwegian, even though I had a business stop there 2 years ago. I am glad they have such a forum, though, it shows they are becoming aware and taking action. I’d like to be able to discourse with them, but I can’t even figure out how to register to login.

I believe you can post anonymously, otherwise the registration link is “Bli Medlem” at the top, and then click the “over 13″ link. :-) Standard phpBB bulletin board.

Norwegian TV2 is airing a dokumentary titeled “the fear of fear” It is on the subjekt of lacking public information on how bad a pandemic might end up, and the differences on Norwegian prepardness in comparison to Austraila, USA etc. Monday 15.05 22.30 mid european time. http://pub.tv2.no/TV2/magasiner/dokument2/programmene/article635643.ece

It is possible to see it on web tv after the airing. Some of it will probably be in english (we dont dub our tv shows) http://webtv.tv2.no/webtv/?treeId=33

Thanks, Urdar - other Europeans watching!

Urdar-NO – at 18:47

what can I say. WOW that was a good dokumentary.. And www.Fluwiki.no was a star in the show ;) I hope this increases traffic from norway. Our forum had a boost, and hopfully we got more members.

http://pub.tv2.no/TV2/magasiner/dokument2/programmene/article635643.ece For those who understand the scandinavian language.. And parts are in english)

Essense of the program was critisism of norwegian governments desicision to not inform the population to prepare, this in opposit of US, Australia and UK. A thanks to the founders of FW, you write history every day!

Hi Urdar! It’s good to hear from you again. Your common sense responses often calm me when the anxiety level builds around here! I hope you have been well.

Urdar-NO – at 06:41

well.. we had an increase of 350 visitors /norway pop 4,5 mil).. that is not much when you think of that it was a national tv show.. Norwegian are not easaly frightend.. or they are just very naive, or dumb.. Thx Swann!. I have in commom with most people in this forum that people sometimes think I am paranoid ;) Fear is a strange thing. On the documentary there was a comment from risk comunicator Peter M. Sandman that “ fear is both good and bad. It makes us take steps to protect us self in a world of dangers. But if people is left with their fears all by them self, it turns into anexeity, and that is not good.. I think this forum is brilliant, but sometimes it is dominated by people who agrees to much about “ worstcase”, and in combination with distrust with your common citicen it is not wery healthy I think.. The differences on the european sosial democratic velfare-state tradition, and the US is hughe, and I think that is part of the explanation on the “ amerikan fear” phenomana. ( like the warnings on the coffecups…) But in the program it was also saidt: that sosialistic states “have an increased responsibility to tell its citizens, that a pandemic is different! The system cant help everbody, its just too much.. I realy hope the Pandemic commity of Norway, have a very productive meeting today. And that they recognises this need for personal prepardness.. After all, pandemics is a fact of human history..

Urdar,

Perhaps I assume too much, but I would believe that Norwegians would have a history of storing food, as the growing season was so short and the winter season so long. Has the advent of food imports and many other modern conveniences erased these habits from your country’s citizens, like it has in the US? Both of my parents grew up on farms (in the Great Depression) and it was considered matter of course that they would stockpile grains and beans in bins that mice couldn’t access; they stocked a root cellar for the entire winter; and the even stored some fresh cabbages, beets, turnips, and winter squash in the side of a hill with layers of straw.

After visiting Maihaugen near Lillehammer, I couldn’t help but believe similar stockpiling was also practiced in your country. I also happened by there on the Summer Soltice during a celebration, so was able to sample many traditional Norwegian cuisines, including sour cream porridge, reindeer, etc.

by looking at the map, I see many small islands and “Fjords” on the Norwegian coast. I wonder, whether the Norwegians will let a fellow troll like me join a group of preppers on some remote Norwegian island or peninsula to isolate from the rest of the world during panflu…

Urdar-NO – at 10:23
D well, if you do, you will certainly be the only one, acording to the public debate
D But yes, most norwegian have cottages, and they all have a instinktive urge to get out of the cities if something as baad as a pandemic ocuors.. Actualy there is room for almost the enteyerly population on this cottages (that these day are often more like luxury homes) but then again, what would be the point.. if the cityes are empty its just as safe to be there..

The main idea of isolating has to be to have the posibility to move “freely” without bumping into people in a close manner, or to not be indoors with others (expept the ones you isolate with). This can be done in most living areas, where people have their own entrances. For larger housings, the plan must be to cooperate with neighbors on hygiene in the common areas.. If you cant cooperate, and and have a justified fear of people living near, I would leave to the countryside if posible..

Remember that the rurual areas also miss alot of the infra structure needed.. So boiling water etc will be done there as well, if there is a risk of contamination in the water from a H-H virus.. And the distances to hospitals, and their resources are much more limited, ( especially if a lot of city people enters). Home is always a good place to be in uncertain times I think..

New trolls are allways velcome in Norway, we have reduced their orignal numbers by building to many highways… :-(

Urdar-NO – at 13:29

Will. sorry i did not see your question.. Maihuagen is a very nice museum. But I am afrieid these days are over. Stockpiling is not a “modern” thing to do. So the youngs dont ( and can mostly not afford it, since they live on student foundings paid out each months, or is working small paid jobs) The elderly do stockpile, some because they remember the war, and allways want to have some food in the house for guests etc. (or they trawel to Sweden for “ smuggling” trips of meat :D The farmers (and we do still have small farmers) probably has a stockpile of the vegetables they produce, and some meat after hunting. The coast people probably has large amunts of frozen fish in their houses. The rest has the last 30 years adobted the habbit of getting in their cars for the shoppingmalls once a week..

In the capitol Oslo, the food shopping habits are some different, imigrant shopps, has made people used of buying fresh vegtables every day. But they are also the main source of rice and other dryfoods, so its very good to be able to shop the preps there

Salted, dryed and smoked meat and fish are now feast food, or is exported to the latin countries. Norway is self sufficent with hvete, eggs, fish, milk prod, potatoes, root vegetables and tomatos (!…) The size of the cornreserve is unknown.. but it is clearly smaller than during the cold war..

Urdar is a good man doing a good work, it is strange that only he and three other included me post most of the time in the fluwiki.no forum. People here really have to much freedom and to few problems to worry about.

I suspect and sadly fear, that Norwegians along with Swedish people will not care to make needed preparations until it may be to late.

I for one am trying my best to do what I can, both for my own family and for other people.
