Up until about 6 weeks ago, I didn’t think this day would ever come. Puts just a bit of a twist in the tummie…

JWB?12 January 2007, 18:44

What time does this chapter end? (EST)

DemFromCT12 January 2007, 18:56

It already has. This is one of the two active threads.

The conversation continues here.

JWB?12 January 2007, 19:24

Once upon a time, on a world, far, far away, there was a very enchanted era. If ever there was a planet more overflowing with magical life, it was there. I know. My vast extended family and I called it home.

This is a short story, of the rise and fall of one of the most remarkable life forms in the universe. My life form. A life form, that by all comparisons was extremely unique. Eventually we came close to dominating this bluish marble wonder, blissfully sailing through space and time.

We fought through the ages to submit all other life forms to our will. To be our slaves, for our consumption and entertainment. But alas, another life form, explicitly complicated, finally destroyed us. It wiped out our offspring, our cousins, our brothers and sisters. It had something we simply could not comprehend. Thus we met our end.

What? What do ask? What was this attribute that this amazing life form possessed that destroyed our quest for dominance? I know not of it’s meaning or capabilities.

It is simply known as the human spirit.

Regards,

H5N1

Tip of the Week-Archive- in the wiki side (right sidebar, at the bottom) is a cool feature. I clicked on A Knight at the Oprah, expecting to see Oprah’s show with Osterholm, but it was a current website, so the clue to click on Tues. gave me this Tues. with Mary Blige and other music guests. That can’t be right.

Here’s a bit about the pandemic show.

the threads “chances for a pandemic” and follow-ups back in May/June, were they removed from the archive ?

Is it OK to post a copy ?

Author?17 January 2007, 03:59

pogge, is it OK to download all the fluwikie threads here now, that the forum is closed and there are no more bandwidth problems ? You may tell me a time, when it’s appropriate. Will take some hours, I assume.

pogge17 January 2007, 11:36

is it OK to download all the fluwikie threads here now

How is it you propose to do this? There are tools out there that, if used inappropriately, can still crash the server even if our traffic is relatively lower than it was.

pogge17 January 2007, 11:53

“Chances for a Pandemic” with followups 2,3,… started on May 25, 2006

Four threads altogether. Restored.

Jane?17 January 2007, 13:15

Can threads be copied and pasted into TextEdit one by one (whew!)? Or is there a way to get them into a flashdrive?

Is there another way? That won’t hurt the server?

Author?18 January 2007, 15:09

thanks for restoring. Could there be many other threads missing ? I plan to use “wget”, download the list of titles, create URLs from it, put it into a big file and run wget on it. First I test with a smaller list, whether it works well. I’ll make the whole archive available with a tool to extract single threads from it. I’ll use the print-versions. Maybe I’ll offer it to fredness from CE, who sends CDs with such Infos, when you are content.

Jane, on the upper right here, there is a “print” button which might make it easier. I hope my archive will also do it.

Author?18 January 2007, 15:54

OK, I’m ready. I have 1900 threads, each one takes some seconds, so 1–2 hours in total. Do you still have some webspace, where it can be uploaded as 1.) one big .htm file, all threads in one file and /or 2.) the same converted to a textfile for keyword search 3.) a file with all the outgoing links 4.) a file with the contents of all the linked files (if that’s OK with copyright)

pogge18 January 2007, 21:32

Re: wget. Here’s what you need to stay away from:

Recursive Download

You should be warned that recursive downloads can overload the remote servers. Because of that, many administrators frown upon them and may ban access from your site if they detect very fast downloads of big amounts of content.

I’m not going to volunteer to host whatever you produce at this point. We haven’t discussed long term plans at length yet. We have several thousand threads archived, i.e. not currently online, that need to be reviewed. The management and I need to discuss what we’re going to do with that material and that may involve experimenting here to see how much of it we can have online at any one time with the site (basically) read-only. We need to get that sorted out before we talk about hosting anything else.

Copyright shouldn’t be an issue for most applications. Everything on this site is published under the GNU Free Documentation License. As long as you abide by that, you’re fine.

Author?20 January 2007, 03:09

recursive download is no problem, since I only download the main-page, not following links. But there is some mechanism built in your page to interrupt the download, I assume. I could only get 200 threads from 1900, so this requires several attempts and additional work. I have to split the task into 10 or more subtasks. I hope to finish it next week.

Author?20 January 2007, 03:47

you use this “robots.txt”, to prevent bulk download. I found it with google ;-)

Jane?20 January 2007, 13:04

Almost Prepared made the last post in Preps you might forget thread before it was closed. He/she said a 55-gal. plastic container was reserved for gasoline for a generator. I thought gas should be stored only in approved containers because of fumes. Also gasoline is kind of a solvent-might it dissolve a garbage can? It’s an awfully large quantity of fuel to have around if the storage is risky.

Bronco Bill20 January 2007, 21:11

Gasoline should ONLY be stored in an EPA-approved container, and that container MUST be red in color to denote it from other liquid-holding containers.

In other words, anyone who stores flammable liquids in a ‘garbage can’ is asking for nothing more than a really nasty explosion and fire if there is a spark among the fumes that will inevitably fill the area!!!// Food grade containers won’t dissolve with gasoline in them, but a sealed, 55-gallon container would level an area about 200 yards wide if there were an accident!

Personally, I think it’s one of the worst prep ideas to come along…

Bronco Bill20 January 2007, 21:19

OTOH---If the plastic container is marked as useable for solvents and gasoline, and it’s stored in a cool area a good distance from any structures, there shouldn’t be any problems…hopefull.
I don’t see anything in Almost Prepared’s post that says s/he is using “garbage cans”…

Hi There BB, would you do me a favor and start up a thread on the new site discussing the posiblity of improving the efficiency of Masks by spraying them with Colidial siver and letting them dry before use. I think this may kill as well as filter the Viruses. It would be inexpensive and easy to do, just get a bottle of 10ppm. Colidial silver from the local health food store and a spray bottle and then spray the inside and outside of the mask and let dry before use.

Bronco Bill11 May 2007, 22:39

Sailor --- I could, but you can do the same if you’re registered on the new site.

To be honest with you, I have an issue with the use of colloidal silver, and it wouldn’t be right for me to start a diary espousing the efficacy of CS after I’ve been so down on it’s use here on the old forum. I’m not trying to blow you off, it’s just that doing that would compromise my position on the use of CS.

If you’re registered, all you have to do is click on New Diary in the upper right corner in your Menu box, then type away

anonymous?24 May 2007, 02:59

Bronco Bill24 May 2007, 06:22

It’s possible, if a request is made to restore it, and that particular thread can be found. Unfortunately, at this time, the one person who can restore threads is out of commission for the time being… I don’t see why a copy, if you have it, couldn’t be posted at the new forum…with reference to the old site here.

cottontop?24 May 2007, 06:59

I think we could use a new, news thread here. The current one has gotten way to long. Thanks.

Bronco Bill24 May 2007, 14:48

Snowhound125 May 2007, 15:49

How do I find the old thread from 2005 that SusanC is referring to in “Why you should take this seriously” in the new forum. Any idea where it originally ran?

DemFromCT 25 May 2007, 22:33

it’s been removed and placed in storage. pogge has it, but he’s still out of commission.

You might ask gs if he has it.

cottontop?25 May 2007, 23:21

That’s why I couldn’t find it. I tried for almost two hours using every search word, phrase, I could think of, searched every part of this forum. I too am interested in SusanC’s orginial posting. I did come across her post of setting up a sick room, which I’ve been wanting to move over to the new forum, if it’s alright with her. That is an aspect of this pandemic that I believe is a very important part of SIP. Oh, and I came across her post when she got her mastiff. Nice read and pictures. Didn’t know what a mastiff was/is! LOL!

Bronco Bill26 May 2007, 00:26

Mastiff = Big, tall stick that holds the sails on a sailboat when there is no wind.

Mastbend = Big, tall BENT stick that USED to hold the sails on a sailboat in a hurricane! ;-)

Bronco Bill26 May 2007, 00:28

Sorry…I couldn’t resist!

ct…ask SusanC about copying that old thread over to the new Forum. I don’t she’d mind one bit…

cottontop?26 May 2007, 08:14

You checky devil!! LOL I know.;-) When I was posting, couldn’t remember how to spell the dogs breed, and tried to do it from memory. Ah, well.

There’s so much good stuff here, I just kept reading. JMO, but wouldn’t searches be more “user friendly” if we could search under the year, or month and year?

anonymous?26 May 2007, 09:43

you don’t need gs for that, it’s public: http://magictour.free.fr/fw.gz

the “Why you should take this seriously” thread is 30KB

the “Fluwiki in the news” thread is 98KB

can it be posted or uploaded ?

I can’t post on the new Flu wiki forum now. I tried to open a new diary about the problem, but it didn’t show up in Recent posts. Nor did the second attempt. Bugs?

pogge27 July 2007, 12:32

I’m having the same problem with comments/replies. But your original diaries are listed under Recent Diaries on the right where they should be. It’s just comments that seem to be acting up.

Jane?27 July 2007, 13:40

BB said to hit the Post key twice, but the site response is so quick, usually the page jumps at the first strike. Even when I succeed at 2 hits, nothing changes. Frustrating, but at least I can read.

The Testing, testing diary has turned red for the most recent posts. The ‘New’ indicator is still there, though.

pogge27 July 2007, 15:04

It’s working now. I’ve responded to one of your diaries.

Jane?27 July 2007, 15:18

I appreciate your responses, but there’s no change for me. I went to my profile page, looked at the empty boxes, did the hard refresh thing that Dem suggested, but nothing happened. Hit it twice and it pinged. In the Comments page, the new thing is Use Ajax comments, which has been checked. Maybe I should remove the check, since I don’t know what it is anyway?

Jane?27 July 2007, 15:33

Yup, works now, after removal of the checkmark in the Ajax comments box. I don’t get it, but, hey, it works. :-)

You should be able to post, but I think you might have to do that with every post. Not sure. Hope that helps.

gsgs?28 July 2007, 14:19

I found the other thread where F5 or crtl+F5 was recommended. That worked for me.

anonymous?02 October 2007, 11:33

seems that the threads:

Flu Wiki In The News Accuracy Of The Flu Polymerase

(and probably many others) are still missing

pogge02 October 2007, 12:41

I have backups of every thread that was ever created on this forum - thousands of them.

I’ve restored Flu Wiki In The News, Accuracy Of Flu Polymerase and Accuracy Of Flu Polymerase Part 2. I see that upthread someone talked about subsequent parts to the polymerase series. If they exist, they must have had different titles.

I’m happy to restore individual threads on request but when considering your requests, please remember why they were archived in the first place: too many pages will slow this server down. We can get away with more now that the activity here is lower, but I’d rather not get carried away.

26 October 2007, 12:56
